3 Gospel Medita on Encourage Deeper Understanding Of Scripture August 26, st Sunday In Ordinary Time This saying is hard; who can accept it? The words of Jesus disciples in today s Gospel must sound familiar. At some point in our lives, you and I have said it about some ar cle of our faith. Chris anity makes firm demands on our ethical behavior, and gives no easy answers for suffering. Many disciples were confused and dismayed by Jesus words in the Bread of Life Discourse. Not all of them, however, had the same reac on. When the disciples ques on Jesus teaching, He confirms its truth. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. For some, Jesus reassurance was not enough. These disciples do not ques on Jesus further, or wrestle with their lack of understanding. The mighty deeds Jesus has done fade to the background. Many of His disciples returned to their former way of life, and no longer accompanied Him. For them, their doubt proves too much. Jesus turns to the Twelve, knowing that confusion lives in their hearts as well. Peter answers. Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe, and are convinced that You are the Holy One of God. No ce this is not a confession of perfect understanding. It is a confession of faith in Jesus. The precise words may s ll confuse them, but they believe the One who said them. In our own lives, we face doubt, confusion, and disillusionment in our Chris an Faith. The same choice available to the disciples is available to us. Do you have faith in Jesus, even when you lack perfect understanding? Will you stay, or will you go? What do you do with your doubt? Liturgical Publica ons Inc St. Monica And St. Augus ne This week we celebrate two Saints, a mother and son: St. Monica and St. Augus ne. As a young Chris an woman, St. Monica was married to a pagan. Early in their marriage, he was bi er and cri cal. A er nearly 20 years, Monica s holy example led to his conversion to Chris anity. In the mean me, Augus ne was a teenager beginning to live a wild life of self-indulgent excess. This lifestyle would con nue into his adulthood. Like with her husband, Monica prayed and fasted for the conversion of her son. Augus ne met another future Saint, the Bishop Ambrose of Milan, who greatly influenced his perspec ve on life. Augus ne was bap zed a Chris an! Augus ne later became a Bishop, and one of the most influen al thinkers in Chris an history. How s that for the power of pa ence and intercessory prayer? 4 Personal Benefit, Common Good Illinois Tax Credit Scholarships You may have heard by now about the new Tax Credit Scholarship Program created through the Invest in Kids Act. You can provide a Catholic Educa on to children from low-income families here at Our Lady of Humility School while also receiving a tax credit yourself. We have 70 Our Lady of Humility School Students on a wai ng list for Scholarships because of funding. 7 RCIA Rite Of Chris an Ini a on For Adults What is RCIA? The Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults (RCIA) is the process established for the universal Church for individuals to become Catholic, and receive the Sacraments of Ini a on Bap sm, Confirma on, and the Eucharist. This ini a on process also involves a Parish community experiencing a renewal in faith as it prepares and welcomes new members into the Church. The Rite speaks of conversion as a spiritual journey. Centered on fostering a deep rela onship with Jesus and the Church He founded, this journey takes place through dis nct stages over a period of me suitable to bring about a thorough catechesis, significant experience of the Parish community, and commitment to the liturgical and moral life of the Catholic faithful. The RCIA process is a restora on of the ancient catechumenate, arising within the first three centuries following the era of the apostles. It was the early Church s way of Chris anizing the pagan Roman Empire. The Second Va can Council called for the restora on and use of this venerable and powerful method of ini a on for the worldwide Church. If you are non-catholic (either bap zed or non-bap zed), or were bap zed Catholic (but never celebrated First Eucharist or Confirma on), and are interested in finding out more about what it means to be Catholic, you are invited to explore RCIA. 8 Everyday Stewardship My wife has a Hope Chest filled with items from her past. Some memories contained in there are joyous, while others are painful, and filled with sorrow. However, all those memories helped to make her the person she is today. They have become a part of her very being. Tradi onally, a Hope Chest contained linens and clothing for a woman s wedding day. It was a chest filled with the hope for the future. As me goes by, many of our hopes are fulfilled. However, life never goes exactly as planned. Some hopes are dashed by unfortunate circumstances, or bad choices we have made. Our hearts are like Hope Chests that long for the day when we are joined for eternity with our God. Along the way, our chest may accumulate addi onal items that we collect on our life s journey. If we are gracious and generous along the way, our chest will fill with fruit to abundance. If we live more with a focus on ourselves, we will find our Hope Chests nearly barren. We will, in fact, lose hope. May the Hope Chest of your heart be overflowing with love that you have freely given, and that has come back to you tenfold. May your generosity provide hope for the hopeless, and may your hope always remain strong. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Eucharis c Adora on When Pope John Paul II visited Bal more a few years ago, one of his stops was at St. Mary s Seminary. The Pope decided to go inside the Chapel and pray before the Blessed Sacrament. Immediately the Secret Service sprang into ac on. Before he could go in, they went through the Chapel with their dogs, trained to find people hiding or trapped in buildings a er disasters. One of the dogs got to the altar where the tabernacle was, and he began to whine. The trainer looked to see that there was no one there, and he tried to pull the dog away, but the dog would not leave. He kept sniffing and whining at the tabernacle, telling his trainer that there was a person really there. And unbeknownst to the trainer, there was a real person there JESUS. The Pope came in and knelt down to worship Him. May the Heart of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament be praised, adored, and loved with grateful affec on, at every moment, in all the tabernacles of the world, un l the end of me. Amen.
