3 A Note From The Pastor Last Friday, on September 29th, we had our annual Oktoberfest. It was a great turnout, and I m grateful to all those who helped make it happen, especially the Knights of Columbus who organized and facilitated the event, and the Women s Club for providing the desserts and floral arrangements. Special Thanks to the Knights, Women s Club, and any other volunteers! This weekend is the first full weekend (Saturday and Sunday) in October, so our Ushers will perform our annual October counts at Mass. They will be coun ng the number of people in the pews at each Mass for the rest of October. While there are a number of Churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago which experience an increase in Mass a endance from one year to another, as an Archdiocese, Mass a endance overall has been going down every year since This is one of the reasons why we ve begun the Renew My Church (RMC) Ini a ve to reenergize our Parishes. This Friday, October 13th, is the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fa ma s appearing to three shepherd-children, along with the great miracle of the sun. In observance of this important event, there will be a celebra on beginning at 6:30PM in the Church with the Rosary and Prayers followed by Mass. A erwards, there will be Refreshments and a Discussion in the Hayes Community Room. In addi on, there will be a Public Square Rosary Crusade next Saturday, October 14th, at 12 Noon at the Shiloh Park in Zion. The Rosary will be recited publicly in observance of the 100th Anniversary of the Fa ma appari ons in Portugal, when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd-children. Please see this bulle n for more details, and consider a ending and learning more about the cri cal messages that Blessed Virgin Mary gave to the children, messages that are even more relevant for our mes. The Respect Life Commi ee will be collec ng diapers a er all of the Masses next weekend, October 14th and 15th, in the Parish Center. All sizes are welcomed. Please see this bulle n for more details. Thank you for your generosity. The next Co-Ed Senior Luncheon will be this Tuesday, October 10th, at 12 Noon in the Parish Center. An exact count of those who will be a ending is needed to ensure enough pastries will be provided. The deadline to sign-up (in the Church Ves bule) is this Sunday, October 8th. All Seniors of the Parish are Welcome! Let us pray for the vic ms of the Las Vegas shoo ng a ack this past week, and for peace in the world. God Bless, Fr. 7 Ask A Priest Q: If Peter is the rock/founda on of the Church, why does he not have a Gospel, and we only hear from him through his le ers? A: To answer this ques on, we need to first realize that there were three dis nct periods in the history of the Early Church. The first (and shortest) period is the Age of the Messiah. This period encompassed the public ministry of Jesus; His Teachings, Miracles, Passion, Death, Resurrec on, and all the way up to His Ascension into Heaven. During this period, the Disciples were not concerned with wri ng anything down. Jesus was walking amongst them; how could they fast when the bridegroom was with them (cf. Mark 2:19)?! How incredible that this 1-3 year window of me so radically changed the en rety of the rest of human history! Prior to His Ascension, Jesus commissioned His Apostles to Go, therefore, and make disciples of all na ons. (Ma 28:19). This mission began on Pentecost, a er the Holy Spirit descended on them as tongues of fire. Star ng in Jerusalem, the Apostles went out to all the world, preaching the good news, and making disciples of Jesus Christ. This period is known as the Age of the Apostles. Unfortunately, it seems that the Apostles missed one important memo. Part of their message included the idea that Jesus return was imminent; the second coming and the end of the world were mere moments away. I suppose that should not be so surprising for us; throughout the centuries since, people have universally believed that the world would end during their life me! Regardless, there was very li le wri en down during the Age of the Apostles because it was deemed superfluous. No need to leave anything for the next genera on, because there wasn t going to be a next genera on! By the year 65AD, the Church realized they had a problem. Jesus had not yet returned, and the first genera on of believers, those who had seen the Lord face to face, was dying off. They realized that they needed to start wri ng down the life and teachings of Jesus, so that future genera ons would have a record of what the Lord said, and taught. It was at this important juncture, that the Age of the Evangelists began, las ng for about 40 years (65-105). The first few lines of the Gospel of Luke give us a beau ful insight into the me of the Evangelists: Since many have undertaken to compile a narra ve of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning, and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I too have decided, a er inves ga ng everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received (Luke 1:1-4). Most likely, Theophilus was a real person; the benefactor who financed Luke s undertaking. But how apropos his name: in Greek, his name is literally the Lover of God!. Luke is actually addressing you, who are a Lover of God, so that you may know the certainty of the teaching you have received! So why, if Peter was the rock/founda on of the Church, did he not write a Gospel? Hopefully, we can answer that ques on sa sfactorily now. For starters, he did not have me to write one; he was too busy going throughout the world and making disciples for Jesus! Secondly, he would not have thought it necessary to write a Gospel; he thought that Jesus would return imminently, and the world would come to an end. We do have two le ers* from St. Peter that have made it into the New Testament, but these are exhorta ons and encouragement to his disciples, as opposed to a narra ve of the life and mes of Jesus Christ. And, finally, perhaps Peter did have an important contribu on to make! Read the last few lines of the First Le er of Peter: I write you this briefly through Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, exhor ng you and tes fying that this is the true grace of God. Remain firm in it. The Chosen One at Babylon sends you gree ng, as does Mark, my son. Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who are in Christ (1 Peter 5:12-14, emphasis mine). The Gospel of Mark, the very first Gospel wri en, was a ributed to John Mark, the companion and disciple of Peter. Although not known for certain, it seems very probable that Mark s source was St. Peter himself. Dear friends, we no longer have access to the Age of the Messiah or the Age of the Apostles. What a blessing that the work of the Evangelists has survived to our present age. Let us take advantage of this great resource; read the Gospels, join a Bible Study, share the stories with family and friends. May we become true disciples of Christ, faithful to the teachings of the Apostles and Evangelists. Peace, Fr. Mike *The authen city of these le ers, especially 2 Peter, is disputed. Odds are, they were pseudonymous works, a ributed to Peter to increase their level of authority. October 08, 2017 Twenty-Seventh Sunday In Ordinary Time 7
