3 A Note From The Pastor This Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent; we begin a new liturgical year. To help you enter into the spirit of Advent, please consider taking a copy of the Daily Reflec ons For Advent & Christmas: Wai ng in Joyful Hope Booklets [$1 dona on if possible]. Advent begins on the Fourth Sunday before Christmas, and therefore, begins no earlier than November 27th, and no later than December 3rd. So this year, Advent begins as late as possible, which means that the Fourth Week of Advent will last for only a few hours! The Fourth Sunday of Advent falls on December 24th, which of course is also Christmas Eve. On the one hand, Christmas is a Holy Day of Obliga on, so Catholics are required to a end Mass for the Fourth Sunday of Advent as well as for Christmas Mass. That means a ending Mass on either Saturday, December 23rd, at 5PM, or on Sunday morning at 7, 9, or 11AM to sa sfy Mass for the Fourth Sunday of Advent; and then at either the 4:30PM, 6:30PM, or Midnight on December 24th, or on Christmas Day at 9AM or 11AM to fulfill the Christmas Day obliga on. On the other hand, New Year s Day is not a Holy Day of Obliga on this year. Each year with the beginning of Advent, we also have the beginning of a new liturgical year. It is common prac ce to make New Year s resolu ons. Advent is an opportunity to make resolu ons regarding prayer and our rela onship with Jesus. We should resolve to spend more me in prayer, so that we may welcome Him into our hearts in a truly new way on Christmas Day. As a reminder, St. Dismas will have a Prayer Service followed by Confessions this Wednesday, December 6th, at 11AM. This Sunday, December 3rd, we will have our Annual All-You-Can-Eat Breakfast with Santa from 8AM to 12:30PM in the Parish Center. All are invited. This Friday is December 8th, a Holy Day of Obliga on. We celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep on. Mass mes are: 7AM, 9AM, and 7PM. Next Saturday, December 9th, the Religious Educa on and OLH School Students who are preparing to receive their First Holy Communion this year, will receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia on for the first me. Please keep them in your prayers as they con nue to prepare. The deadline for Christmas Flower dona ons is this Thursday, December 7th. Please place your envelope in the Collec on Basket, or drop it off at the Parish Office in the Rectory. As we begin Advent this weekend, my hope is that we all spend more me in prayer preparing our hearts to welcome Jesus in a special way on Christmas Day. I hope we all make these four weeks of Advent more about Jesus than anything else. God Bless, Fr. Paul December 03, 2017 First Sunday Of Advent 3

4 Christmas Remembrance The Advent season is filled with hopeful an"cipa"on looking forward to the celebra"on of the birth of Jesus Christ. As we celebrate, flowers and fes"ve decora"ons become an important part of our homes, as well as our Church environment. It is also a "me when we most miss family and friends who have gone before us here on earth. In their life"me, they gave us a gi= of themselves, and now, we can remember them and all of our loved ones by making a dona"on for flowers in their name as they con"nue to remain alive in us, especially during this Christmas season. The names of those you wish to be remembered will be listed in the bulle"n. To par"cipate, please fill out the envelopes at the doors of the Church with your dona"on and memorial by: Annual Breakfast With Santa & Christmas Cra!s With The Children! She iden"fied Herself as the ever Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we live, of the Creator of all things, Lord of heaven and earth. She made a request for a Church to be built on the site, and Juan Diego submi#ed Her wish to the local Bishop. When the Bishop hesitated, and requested a sign, the Mother of God obeyed without delay or ques"on, sending Her na"ve messenger to the top of the hill in mid-december to gather an assortment of roses for the Bishop. A=er complying to the request for a sign, She le= for us an image of Herself imprinted miraculously on the na"ve s "lma, a poor quality cactus-cloth, which should have deteriorated in 20 years, but shows no sign of decay a=er more than 475 years later. It s"ll defies all scien"fic explana"ons of its origin. Her message is of love and compassion, and a universal promise of help and protec"on to all mankind. An incredible list of miracles, cures, and interven"ons are a#ributed to Her. Yearly, an es"mated 10 million visit Her Basilica, making Her Mexico City home the most popular Marian Shrine in the world, and the most visited Catholic Church in the world next to the Va"can. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12th. In 1999, Pope John Paul II, in his homily from the Solemn Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, during his third visit to the sanctuary, declared the date of December the 12th as a Liturgical Holy Day for the whole con"nent. During the same visit, Pope John Paul II entrusted the cause of life to Her loving protec"on, and placed under Her motherly care the innocent lives of children, especially those who are in danger of not being born. Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear that nor any other sickness or anguish. Am I not here, who am your Mother? Are you not under my protec"on? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within my fold? What else do you wish? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything. (Words of Our Lady to Juan Diego) Informa"on obtained from: Our Lady of Guadalupe Patroness of the Americas website: Christmas Gi%s For The Residents Of The Grove Once again, Our Lady of Humility Women s Club will be sponsoring Gi's For The Residents Of The Grove At Christmas. Anything you would like to receive as a gi= would truly make the residents happy. There is a Decorated Christmas Box in the Ves"bule between the Church and Parish Center un"l Sunday, December 17th. We ask that the items be placed unwrapped in the box. Seminarians and Faculty 8 Welcome to Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church Kasana-Luweero Uganda Seminarian Fund Fr. Paul has ini ated and blessed a foreign mission for Our Lady of Humility. Our project will be the Seminarians from the Diocese where Fr. Charles is a Priest. His Kasana-Luweero Diocese has 30 Seminarians. Fr. Charles is on the Faculty at the St. Mary Ggaba Seminary in Kampala, Uganda, and is also the Chaplain of Sports (some mes he coaches the soccer teams). A semester costs $300 for tui on, housing, and food for each Seminarian. This is a bargain by USA standards, but is a fortune in Uganda. If you would like to help the Seminarians, Our Lady of Humility will be holding Appeals 2 x Year. Seminarians in the Classroom There are two ways to do this: 1. Contribute to the Fund for Those in Greatest Need ; or 2. Sponsor a Seminarian ($600/Year 4 Year Commitment). If you decide to sponsor, then you must note that when you write the check so that our OLH Business Manager will be able to let the Seminary Officials know. If it is not designated, it will go to Those in Greatest Need. If you sponsor a Seminarian, you will then correspond with your Seminarian via . Checks are wri en to Our Lady of Humility (this money will be on your Year-End Tax Statement from Our Lady of Humility, and is tax deduc ble). Two mes a year, Our Lady of Humility will send a check from this fund to the Chicago Archdiocese Mission Office, and that Office will transfer the funds electronically to the Kasana-Luweero Diocese in Uganda. There will be special envelopes at the Church doors. Please use these special envelopes so that the money will not be misdirected. These special envelopes can be put in the Sunday Collec on Basket, or delivered to the Rectory. For more informa on, please contact: Seminarians Make a Joyful Noise Linda Bugos-Noble at: bugosnoble@gmail.com, or Gloria Askew at: gloriaaskew@comcast.net. Statue of Mary Holding the Seminary

9 Ask A Priest Q: When Jesus was on the Cross, He told the thief; Today you will be with Me in Paradise. ( Luke 23:43). Why does the Apostle s Creed tell us that Jesus descended into Hell, and then did not ascend to Heaven un l the Third day? Also, how is it possible for Jesus to ever be in Hell? A: That passage from Luke s Gospel always gives me goosebumps! Think about it; here is a vile human being. He is guilty of such terrible crimes that he is being crucified; a punishment reserved for the worst of the worst. In an incredibly med moment of clarity, he admits his guilt, and has the courage and humility to ask the Son of God for forgiveness. In that hour of Divine Mercy, Christ Jesus, Himself in the throes of terrible suffering, uses what li le energy He has le to give this man some words of reassurance. Today, you will be with Me in Paradise. Your slate is wiped clean! Your past crimes are washed away in the mercy of God! And not only that, you get to go straight to Heaven! What truly makes this passage so beau ful, however, is the fact that it is the same offer that Jesus gives to each one of us! We are terrible sinners. We have turned our backs on God me and me again. But God sends His Son into the world not to condemn us, but so that we might be saved (cf. John 3:17). When we humble ourselves before Jesus in sacramental Confession, He extends to us the same mercy He extended to the dying thief. But to the ques ons at hand! Let s begin by examining the relevant text of the Apostle s Creed: He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. As you can see, there are three dis nct periods. A er dying on the cross, Jesus descended into hell. Then on the third day, Jesus rises from the dead (Easter). And 40 days later, on the Solemnity of the Ascension, Jesus ascended into Heaven. So, that might clear up some ini al confusion, but it s ll does not solve the issue of how Jesus wound end up in Hell! In the La n transla on of the text, it states that Jesus descendit ad inferna. The Greek text gives a be er connota on: κατελθόντα εις τα κατώτατα (He descended to the Underworld). O en mes, this phrase is translated as He descended to the dead/to Sheol/to Hades. This expresses a different theological understanding than what we mean by Hell. If you remember from one of my earlier ar cles, Heaven is the state of being in the presence of God for eternity, and Hell is the state of being eternally separated from God. Because of Original Sin, the en re human race was cut off from the Bea fic Vision; none of us could enter Heaven, and look upon God face to face for eternity. When Jesus died on the Cross, He reopened for us that path to salva on, gran ng us once more the opportunity to enjoy the eternal bea tude of Heaven. But what about all those righteous men and women who lived and died before the coming of the Savior? What about Abraham, Elijah, and Moses; St. Joachim and St. Anne? Because of Original Sin, no one was allowed to enter into Heaven! So where did these folks go a er they died? Well, they had to go and wait somewhere. This somewhere is what the Creed refers to as hell. Obviously, it was not the capital H version, but simply a lowercase version. A transla on like, He descended to the dead or He descended into Hades would have probably cleared up this confusion, but then it would make for a much different bulle n ar cle! So yes, Jesus could never be in Hell, because as the Second Person of the Trinity Incarnate, He can never be separated from God even for a moment. What we profess is that at some point between the evening of Good Friday and the dawn of Easter Sunday, Jesus went to the place where all those righteous souls were eagerly longing for the coming of the Messiah. He announced to them that Heaven was now open, and He brought them into their eternal abode. Included in this group was that penitent thief, and he gives us encouragement. One day, we hope to join him in the endless hymn of praise around the Throne of God. Peace, Fr. Mike Save The Date Simbang Gabi Thursday, December 21st, At 7PM Mark your calendar for this year s Simbang Gabi Celebra on. There will be a Mass on Thursday, December 21st, at 7PM.
