3 A Note From The Pastor This Sunday at the 11AM Mass we will celebrate the Rite of Sending: We will send our RCIA Catechumens and Candidates to the Bishop (at Holy Name Cathedral) to be recognized in their elec on. Please keep our RCIA Catechumens and Candidates in your prayers as they prepare for Easter. Next weekend we will have our Annual Collec on for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collec on helps the Church in over 25 countries, many of which were formerly under communist rule. Please prayerfully consider helping our brothers and sisters across the world. Reminder: We will have our Parish Lenten Mission next Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, March 4th, 5th, and 6th, at 7PM in the Church followed by a Recep on in the Parish Center. Fr. Anthony Jelinek will give the Mission. He will also hear Confessions from 6PM to 6:45PM each day prior to the Mission. As I have men oned, OLH School is ac vely involved in a search for a new Principal for next year. Please keep our search commi ee in your prayers, that the Holy Spirit guide us in finding the right Principal for next year. Last week I men oned that in looking for volunteers to serve as Mass Sacristans, we had some of the Masses covered. Actually, we s ll have a need for addi onal volunteers for all the Masses we would like to have at least two volunteers for each Mass, so that Sacristans would not have to serve every week. Please con nue to prayerfully discern if God is calling you to serve in this sacred ministry. Easter will arrive soon. I thought I would begin prin ng our schedule of Masses for Easter. The Easter Vigil will be at 7:45PM on Saturday, March 31st. For Easter Sunday, April 1st, the schedule of Masses will be: 7AM, 8:30AM, 10AM, and 11:30AM. I will finalize the rest of the Holy Week Schedule very soon. Let us pray for our community and for the whole world. God Bless, Fr. Paul February 25, 2018 Second Sunday Of Lent 3

9 Ask A Priest Q: How can lay people learn how to pray the Liturgy of the Hours? A: This ques on is a bit more esoteric than I usually answer, so let us spend the first few paragraphs answering the ques on: What is the Liturgy of the Hours? Peace, The Liturgy of the Hours is also known as the Breviary (from the La n breviarium: summary. It is also the origin of the word abbreviate.) It is an ancient form of prayer in the Church, da ng back to the first century. Following the example of Jewish piety, the early Chris ans would offer set mes of prayer to God; in the morning, the evening, and at the Sacrifice of the Mass. By this means, the whole day was consecrated to the Lord. With the rise of Monas cism around the 3rd century, also came the intensifica on of this devoted life of prayer. In Psalm 119:164, the psalmist tells God that: Seven mes a day I praise You (Ps. 119:164). The early monks decided that if three set mes for prayer were good, then seven set mes of prayer were even be er! The modern Breviary includes these same seven set mes. Vigils or Ma ns (now called the Office of the Readings), Lauds (Morning Prayer), Terce (Mid-morning Prayer), Sext (Mid-day Prayer), None (Mid-a ernoon Prayer), Vespers (Evening Prayer), and Compline (Night Prayer). St. Benedict and his early monks added an eighth me of prayer, Prime, probably for the sake of symmetry. His monks would gather for prayer at Midnight, 3AM, 6AM, 9AM, 12 Noon, 3PM, 6PM, and 9PM! There s ll are some monas c communi es which con nue this rigorous schedule; how wonderful that they are praying for us around the clock! One last bit of trivia; the Liturgy of the Hours is very much psalm-based. Our modern breviary has a four week cycle, meaning that we will pray each of the 150 psalms at least once every four weeks. Back in the early days, however, the monks would chant all 150 psalms every day! Lay people would gather with the monks to pray the Liturgy (a prac ce that is s ll encouraged!), but the busyness of everyday life prevented them from singing all 150 psalms. To make up for this deficiency, a devo on developed to pray 150 Hail Mary s every day instead. It is from this devo on that we now have the Rosary! During the Rite of Ordina on, every future priest and deacon is asked; Are you resolved to maintain and deepen a spirit of prayer appropriate to your way of life and, in keeping with what is required of you, to celebrate faithfully the Liturgy of the Hours for the Church and for the whole world? What a beau ful commitment that we make! We promise that for the rest of our lives, we will daily pray this great prayer of the Church FOR the Church, both in good mes and in bad! And while you are under absolutely no obliga on to pray the Liturgy of the Hours as a lay person, what a beau ful way to pray; to unite your voice with the voices of all the bishops, priests, and deacons throughout the whole world, praying for all the members of the Mys cal Body of Christ. So how does one learn how to pray the Breviary? My best advice is to do what I do; download the app! ibreviary is available in the App Store, for free! Honesty, I haven t used my book in 7 years, ever since I downloaded the app! As well as the Breviary being organized for every day (no page turning!), it offers daily Mass readings, prayers, and other wonderful things; truly an app that we should all have on our phones. For those, however, that prefer the feel of a real book; I recommend buying the four volume set. It is also available in the Large Print Edi ons, for those of us who need the extra help. Addi onally, it would be extremely beneficial for the novice to purchase the St. Joseph Guide for the Liturgy of the Hours. This pamphlet is readily available at Catholic Bookstores or online (for less than $5), and it walks you through each day of the Liturgical Year. But honestly, learning your way around the Breviary, and se ng your ribbons correctly, is a skill best learned from someone else. If you would like addi onal help, feel free to call me up and make an appointment. If there are enough people that express interest, perhaps we can arrange to have a li le seminar on campus. Whether you are using the books or using the app, the Liturgy of the Hours truly is the Prayer of the Church offered on behalf of the Church. The more voices we raise to God in prayer, the more blessings we can bestow on this world that so desperately needs it. Please know that you are in my prayers (seven mes a day!); I ask that you please keep me in yours. Fr. Mike February 25, 2018 Second Sunday Of Lent 9
