3 A Note From Your Pastor... Reminder: We will be having a joint Advent Penance Service with St. Patrick s in Wadsworth here at OLH this Monday, December 17th, at 7PM. I would like to thank all of you for par cipa ng in our Second Collec on, the Homes For Christmas Drive. Last week the Second Collec on was $3,794, which along with last week s collec on of $1,360, and an anonymous $6,000 dona on brings our total to $11,154! I am grateful for your generosity. We are so close to mee ng our goal of $12,000 to build homes for two families in Hai. I want to stress my gra tude, but I need to also point out that our Parish Collec on was $2,350 below budget; for the year our collec ons are down $10,000 from last year at this me. Again, this is a very generous community; may God bless you for all that you do for the Church and for others. As we are in the Holy Season of Advent, I would like to remind all of us about the importance of observing silence before Mass. This was an issue I discussed with the Parish Council a few years ago. The recommenda on was that silence should be observed ten minutes before Mass begins. Perhaps you may remember last year on November 15th, at his general audience, Pope Francis taught about the Mass saying that the me before Mass is not a me for chit-chat. We should come early to Mass to prepare ourselves for an encounter with the Lord Jesus. I wanted to see what Church documents have to say about silence before Mass. The Church s General Instruc on of the Roman Missal [Third Typical Edi on] states: Even before the celebra on [i.e., Mass] itself, it is a praiseworthy prac ce for silence to be observed in the church, in the sacristy, in the ves ng room, and in adjacent areas, so that all may dispose themselves to carry out the sacred celebra on in a devout and fi ng manner [#45]. I do acknowledge the importance of the communal/social dimension of a ending Mass, but we do have the Parish Center available both before and a er Mass. But many people have rightly approached me about the difficul es in praying and preparing before Mass begins, with the distrac on of conversa ons. So, I think we can all agree that people naturally greet each other as they gather together. But let s also agree that, at a certain me before Mass begins, say, ten minutes, we observe sacred silence to prepare to hear the Lord speak to us in the Liturgy of the Word, and to feed us in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. To remind all of us, either a minister or I will make an announcement at the ten-minute mark before Mass begins to observe silence. Also, I will put an easel at the entrances to remind all of us. Please consider coming to Church early, if you aren t already, and preparing with prayer or medita ng on the readings for Mass. It can really transform your encounter with Jesus at Mass. A table has been setup in the back of Church with cards to fill out for Fr. Val and Fr. Mike. Feel free to fill out a card, and drop it in the corresponding box. A Simbang Gabi Mass will be celebrated this Saturday, December 22nd, at the 5PM Mass. Mass will be in English, and all are invited. There will be a Recep on a erwards in the Parish Center. Please consider reaching out and assis ng our Food Pantry and the Helping Hands of Our Lady by taking an Angel or envelope off of the Angel Trees in back of Church. Thursday, December 27th, is Our Lady of Humility s commitment to provide volunteers to help with the Soup Kitchen at Holy Family Services (the old St. Bartholomew Parish) located at: 914 8th Street, Waukegan. It is always the fourth Thursday of every month. Food prepara on begins at 3PM, dinner is served at 5:30PM, followed by clean-up. We are usually done by 7PM. Our goal is to help the needy and the hungry with monies collected from the Christmas Angel Tree. Please help us help more people this year. Greeters Needed For Our Christmas Masses Dear Parishioners, In an effort to make our Church services more friendly and welcoming, we are trying to organize Greeters to stand at the Church doors, and welcome people at the start of each of the Christmas Masses. We only need 2 people for each Mass, one for the east and west entrances of the Church. There will be a Sign-up Sheet on the table in the back of Church for people to sign-up. The OLH School Second Grade Students were asked to write a le er to Santa Claus explaining why they deserve to be on his NICE List this Christmas. They listed specific reasons of HOW they have been very good this year. Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Bruno helped them understand and acknowledge that any act of kindness is good, and a wonderful example of how to act Catholic and Excellent. Above are three Second Grade Students with their le ers Braylon wrote, I care for my brother when he is hurt. Isabella (student in the middle) included that she walks the neighbor s dogs to help them. And Keira helps my neighbor shovel snow. We were proud of our Second Graders and their le ers! A Special Thank You! A hear elt THANK YOU to ALL the very generous OLH School Students, Parents, Guardians, and everyone who donated money and/or toys for the Toys for Tots Program! We proudly collected THREE FULL bins full of toys as well as a monetary dona on! Many of our students used their own money to buy a gi to share!!!!!! A Sixth Grader (Molly) was asked about her dona on and she said, I feel bad for families who can t afford to buy their kids toys for Christmas, and it made me feel good to help! Thank you OLH School for being Catholic and Excellent, and helping our community and children in need by helping them have a Happy Christmas! God Bless your generosity!
