3 A Note From The Pastor This weekend our Christ First Teen Ministry will have their Annual Souper Bowl of Caring. Everyone is invited to throw $1 (or more) into the soup pots held out by our teens. As I men oned last week, Lent is coming up soon. This year Ash Wednesday coincides with Valen ne s Day (February 14th), which is largely a secular celebra on. Some people have asked Cardinal Cupich for a dispensa on from the obliga ons to fast and abstain from meat. He has responded by no ng that Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful reflec on and penance, as is evident by the large number of Church goers on this day. In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday, the obliga on of fast and abs nence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community. Valen ne s Day can appropriately be celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which also happens to be Mardi Gras, a tradi onally fes ve me before beginning our Lenten observance. I agree with Cardinal Cupich: Lent is a very solemn season in which we forget about ourselves, and reorient ourselves towards God with all our hearts. We have to put our faith ahead of secular celebra ons. My hope is all Catholics will move their Valen ne s Day celebra ons to Tuesday, February 13th. As I think of my previous two and a half years here at OLH, I m grateful for your generosity in responding to the Annual Catholic Appeal. I pray for this year s success, and that the Lord reward you for your generous response to follow Him. God Bless, Fr. Paul 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, Follow Me This weekend, our Parish will be conduc ng the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one- me special collec on. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gi payable in installments. The ACA theme, Come, Follow Me was selected to remind us to con nue to answer Jesus call to follow Him in thought, word, and deed by providing the necessary contribu on to fund ministries and services to share God s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes par cipate in the Campaign, and the gi s of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Thank you for your prayerful considera on and generous response. February 04, 2018 Fi h Sunday In Ordinary Time 3

4 The Season Of Lent During Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer, and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to sacrifice self-control through fas ng. Many know of the tradi on of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to prac ce self-discipline, and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fas ng tradi on in this reflec on. In addi on, the giving of alms is one way to share God s gi s not only through the distribu on of money, but through the sharing of our me and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: Not to enable the poor to share in our goods, is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 2446). Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need, and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Pope Francis We are called not just to abstain from sin during Lent, but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers of Christ. We recall those waters in which we were bap zed into Christ s death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ. Catholics are also encouraged to make going to Confession a significant part of their spiritual lives during Lent. 7 A Taste Of Heaven Awaits Us In Eucharis c Adora on! Indeed, Earth is joined to Heaven each me we are united with the Saints and Angels in extolling God, Who, in worship we see, if not with the sight of eyes, then with the eyes of faith. We are called to abide in the Eucharis c Presence of our Lord, like the Saints and Angels do in Heaven, as they behold the glory of God, and sing His Praise! The Saints and Angels wait upon the Lord, and do His Will in all things. Their presence magnifies the Lord. They also intercede for us before the Lord. When we look upon the Sacred Host, we look at Jesus, the Son of God. Do we see Him in all His glory and majesty? Do our lips proclaim His praise? Do our souls magnify the Lord making Him clearer, more in focus, and larger to others around us? Do we place the needs of others before Him? Are we open to the Will of God, and strive for perfec on in our spiritual lives so that we, too, may one day join the company of Saints in Heaven? It is at this moment when we are most in mately in communion with God, that we experience a taste of Heaven, a foreshadowing of what it will be like, when, by God s grace, we enter into everlas ng life. Indeed, this is the will of My Father, that everyone who looks upon the Son and believes in Him, shall have eternal life. Him I will raise up on the last day. ( Jn 6:40). Do something special during this upcoming Lent, please consider coming to Eucharis c Adora on on Thursdays at 1PM. 9 Ask A Priest Q: What is the difference between the Gi s of the Holy Spirit and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit? A: First, let us briefly recall the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. God, who is Love, is a rela onship of Persons. There is a Lover (the Father), a Beloved (the Son), and the Love that passes between them (the Holy Spirit). All of Crea on is a result of the super-abundance of the Love of God; it overflows from the Trinity into the hearts of each one of us. Created in God s image and likeness, we are created for Love; it is only through our ability to love and be loved that we will reach our fulfillment. Peace, Now, just as the Holy Spirit is the manifesta on of the Love between the Father and Son, it is through the Gi s of the Holy Spirit that our love for God and neighbor is perfected. These Gi s of the Spirit are special abili es which perfect the virtues we received at Bap sm. They enable us to become the people we were created to be. Let us pause for a moment, and quickly answer the original ques on: the Gi s of the Spirit are abili es given us by God, and the Fruits of the Spirit are the manifesta ons of these abili es in everyday life. Suppose I had the gi of being an incredible athlete. This athle c talent would help me in other ac vi es as well: I would be strong, and flexible, and healthy, and ac ve. In much the same way, our Spiritual Gi s have prac cal fruits that manifest themselves throughout our lives. There are seven Gi s of the Spirit, as outlined in Isaiah 11:1-2. They are as follows: 1. Sapien a (Wisdom). The perfec on of the Virtue of Charity. The desire to judge all things through God, by combining the will and the intellect. 2. Intellectus (Understanding). The perfec on of the Virtue of Faith. The illumina on of the mind to grasp the Truths of our Faith. 3. Consilium (Counsel). The perfec on of the Virtue of Prudence. The supernatural intui on to judge the right way to act, even in difficult situa ons. 4. For tudo (For tude). The perfec on of the Virtue of For tude. The firmness of mind required to both do the good and to endure through evil. 5. Scien a (Knowledge). The perfec on of the Virtue of Temperance. The ability to see things through the light of faith and from the perspec ve of God. 6. Pietas (Piety). The perfec on of the Virtue of Jus ce. The ability to recognize our total reliance on God, and to come before God with humility, trust, and love. 7. Timor Domini (Fear of the Lord). The perfec on of the Virtue of Hope. The awareness of God s glory and majesty, and the fear of ever separa ng oneself from God. We receive the Theological Virtues (Faith, Hope, and Charity), and the Cardinal Virtues (Temperance, Prudence, Jus ce, and For tude) at our Bap sm. As you can see in the list above, these virtues are all perfected in our souls when the Holy Spirit is bestowed on us in the Sacrament of Confirma on. If you have not yet been Confirmed, call the Office and register for our prepara on program! Classes begin February 12th. Of course, as we men oned above, these Gi s of the Spirit produce prac cal fruits that are manifested in our everyday life. In Gala ans 5:22-23, St. Paul iden fies nine dis nct Fruits of the Spirit: 1. Caritas (Love). Goodwill that always seeks the best for others, giving freely without asking for anything in return. 2. Gaudium (Joy). The interior awareness that God is my Strength and Protector. 3. Pax (Peace). The interior equilibrium resul ng from trus ng myself completely to God. 4. Longanimitas (Pa ence). The capacity to con nue to bear with difficult circumstances, not out of complacency, but ac vely resis ng weariness or defeat. 5. Benignitas (Kindness). Adjus ng myself to the people around me, as opposed to demanding that they adapt to my needs and desires. 6. Bonitas (Goodness). Kindness, generosity, and joy in being good, manifested as a persistent state of life. 7. Fides (Faithfulness). The personal resolve not to wander away from commitments or promises made to another, especially to God. 8. Modes a (Gentleness). An even-tempered, tranquil, unpreten ous disposi on that has the passions under control. 9. Con nen a (Self-control). The ability to have mastery over my thoughts, feelings, desires, and ac ons. As I am si ng here typing this list, I cannot help but feel inspired; how much I desire to experience these fruits in my everyday life! Dear friends, these fruits are available to us if we open our hearts to them. May we con nue to strive for these graces in all of our work and prayer, giving ourselves totally to God so that God might give Himself totally to us. Fr. Mike February 04, 2018 Fi h Sunday In Ordinary Time 9
