O en the problem with reading the Bible is that it was not wri en as a linear story. So, when people begin to read it, they quickly lose the overall narra ve thread or plot of the story. But with this unique approach, we will learn about the major people, places, events, and themes of the Bible ge ng the big picture of the Bible from crea on and Adam and Eve (the Book of Genesis), all the way through the Resurrec on of Jesus Christ, and the beginnings of the Catholic Church (Acts of the Apostles). Perhaps for the first me in your life, you will understand the overview of the Bible story. This then makes subsequent Bible Study and reading understandable, and the Sunday Mass Readings come alive like never before. Come and learn more about the Greatest Story Ever Told! Unlocking the Mystery of The Bible will be offered at Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church in Beach Park on Tuesday Evenings from 7PM 8:30PM. This is an eight-session program beginning September 26th, and ending on December 5th. We will not meet every Tuesday. Our first mee ng will be in the Church. 4 Ask A Priest Q: Why does God allow people to commit horrible atroci es (like the Holocaust) against each other? A: Ok, I was expec ng more of a so ball ques on for my first ar cle, but this is good, too! Let s get right into it. Peace, Your ques on is actually a reworking of what philosophers call the Argument from Evil, which a empts to prove that God does not exist. The argument is as follows: God is Omniscient (all-knowing), so He will know if there is any evil in the world. God is Omnibenevolent (all-good), so He would want to eliminate all evil from the world. God is Omnipotent (all-powerful), so He is able to eliminate all evil from the world. Yet, there is s ll evil in the world Therefore, God either lacks one of the above characteris cs, or God does not exist. On the surface, the argument seems quite powerful. A er all, what parent, if she knew that her child was suffering, and could stop the suffering, would not immediately rescue her child from the pain? Counterarguments like this will build character cannot adequately jus fy atroci es like the Holocaust. Does God really care, or is God even there? Of course, the argument has an easy solu on when we apply some theology. In Genesis 1-2, we read that God creates everything out of nothing, and He creates man and woman in His image and likeness. To understand what this means, we need to fast-forward to 1 John 4:8, God is Love. Humanity, therefore, is created for love; to love and to be loved by God, and by one another. One of the most fundamental proper es of love is freedom. Love without freedom is not authen c love; it is slavery or servitude, no ma er how benevolent the feeling. God s love for us is so strong, God s desire for us to love Him in return is so powerful, that He bestows on each of us the gi of Free Will. In order for Free Will to be authen cally free, God does not manipulate or interfere with this gi. Think about the audacity of this reality for just a few moments; God loves us so much that He gives us the freedom to choose, knowing full well that many people will use this capacity to u erly reject Him. Why does God do that?! Why doesn t He just make us robots with the illusion of freedom?! God s love for humanity is so radically different than anything we could ever comprehend. And this leads us back to the original ques on; God allowed the Holocaust to occur because the gi of Free Will is a fundamental and necessary aspect of human existence. This does not mean that God does not answer prayers, or perform miracles, or bestow the grace of conversion on individuals and socie es, but we s ll get to decide whether or not to par cipate in the life of grace. So let us freely choose for God. Let us fight for peace and jus ce in our world. Let us allow God to work and speak and act through us so that others might recognize the invita on to rela onship that God extends to them. Evil exists, but where sin increases, grace overflows all the more. Fr. Thursday, August 24th, is Our Lady of Humility s commitment to provide volunteers to help with the Soup Kitchen at Holy Family Services (the old St. Bartholomew Parish) located at: 914 8th Street, Waukegan. It is always the fourth Thursday of every month. Food prepara on begins at 3PM, dinner is served at 5:30PM, followed by clean-up. We are usually done by 7PM. 6 The OLH Women s Club Annual Retreat Is On Saturday, September 16, 2017, At The Shrine Of Christ s Passion, St. John, Indiana We will start the day a ending the 8AM Mass in the Church. The bus will depart Our Lady of Humility at 9AM sharp. Immerse yourself in Christ s last hours by si ng with Our Lord at the Last Supper, praying with Him in the Garden of Gethsemane, standing beside Him as Pilate condemns Jesus to death, and walking along side of Him on the rocky road to Calvary. We will witness the empty tomb in which Our Lord was laid signifying Christ s power over death and sin. Each scene is composed of exquisite life-sized bronze statues, original music, and though ul medita ons. The Gi Shoppe has been cited as being one of the largest and most beau ful ever seen. The all-inclusive cket price of $47.00 covers the bus ride, lunch, and Shrine dona on. There is a Sign-up Sheet and a Registra on Form in the Church Ves bule with lunch and beverage selec ons. Make your checks payable to the OLH Women s Club. You can drop your check and completed Registra on Form at the Rectory, or place it in the Sunday Offering Basket. There are a limited 10 club car seats available to those who need assistance walking one-mile due to a medical condi on. Reserva ons are on a first come first serve basis upon purchasing your cket. ONLY 51 SEATS ARE AVAILABLE, AND ARE ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVE BASIS. Deadline is August 28th. 7 Our Lady Of Humility s Women s Club Calling All OLH Women! Calling All OLH Women! All Ladies of Our Lady of Humility Parish (Church and School) are invited to join the OLH Women s Club. On Thursday, September 7th, we will be kicking off our first mee ng of the new year with a Potluck Dinner. The OLH Women s Club will supply the meat and beverages. Please bring a dish to pass. The mee ng will begin promptly at 6PM in the Hayes Community Room. Please RSVP to Laurian at (847) so we can plan accordingly. We are a social group of women that support the Parish (Church and School), and the women at Our Lady of Humility through fundraisers and fellowship with one another. Membership Forms are available in the Church Ves bule. Annual Membership Dues are $ Fill out the Membership Form, and drop off the completed Form with your Annual Membership Dues at the Rectory, or you can drop it in the Sunday Offering Basket in an envelope marked OLH Women s Club. Co-Ed Senior Luncheon Steve and Brenda will be hos ng the August Co-Ed Senior Luncheon this Tuesday, August 8th, at 11:30AM at their home. Enter by way of the far southwest door of the School Building. The Religious Educa on Office is down the hall a bit on the right side. Classes are for Pre-School through High School. Classes start Sunday, September 10th, and Monday, September 11th. We hold Classes on Sunday Mornings from 10:30AM un l 12 Noon, and Monday Evenings from 6:30PM un l 8PM. Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we should reflect Christ s light to the world. When we receive the Eucharist, the body and blood of Jesus, we are called to be supernatural to reflect His love, mercy, and forgiveness to others. When we are grateful for all that God has given us, generosity flows through us because we are made in God s image. 9 RCIA With the gi of Jesus Precious Blood on the Cross and in the Eucharist, let us reflect on the freedom given to us through our Bap sm into Him to be heirs of the promise and liberated from sin. The Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults (RCIA) is the way by which persons become Ci zens of the Kingdom through Bap sm, Confirma on, and Eucharist. Jesus said, If you love Me, you will keep My Commandments. ( John 14:15). But what does that mean? How well do you know the Commandments? Would you like to gain a deeper understanding of them? We gather on Tuesday Evenings in the Holy Child Center (house on the east side of the Church) from 7:30-9PM (study follows Outdoor Sta ons of the Cross from 6:30-7:15PM.) You do not have to come every week to be part of the group study. There is no fee to par cipate, you just need to bring a Catechism Of The Catholic Church with you each week. If you do not already own a copy, you can pick one up at almost any bookstore or online book retailer. A free online version is available as well on: The Catechism Of The Catholic Church is a wonderful resource to explain the Commandments, and other teachings of the Church. By reading and discussing it together, we will all gain a much deeper understanding of what it means to love God and love others.
