3 A Note From The Pastor Next Monday, July 16th, is the Memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. We will have a Special Mass at 7PM in the Church. Anyone who would like to receive and be enrolled in the Brown Scapular of Mount Carmel may do so. For those unable to a end, please note that the opportunity for scapular enrollment will be made available again at some point in the future. Some of you have asked, Where is Fr. Charles? Fr. Charles is a ending CPE (Clinical Pastoral Educa on) Summer Program at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. CPE is an opportunity to serve as a Chaplain Intern through hands-on prac ce, clinical supervision, and academic study. Because it is so far away in Barrington, he is staying at a Catholic Rectory during the week, Monday through Friday, and then he comes back to our Parish on Friday evenings. The program will run well into August; I don t know his departure date as yet. The Young Adult Ministry (YAM) of Lake County is hos ng a five-session summer Theology on Tap Series. The next mee ng is scheduled for July 15th. Deacon Allen Tatara will give a talk about stress tled, When is Enough Enough? at Fatman s located at: North Skokie Highway in Gurnee. All talks begin at 7PM, and last about an hour with Ques ons and Answers a erwards. The series will not meet each week. YAM is a community of Young Adults ages Please see the flyer posted on the bulle n board at the main entrance to the Church. In this week s Gospel, we hear these words in reference to Jesus: Is He [Jesus] not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? Passages such as this in the New Testament have led some Chris ans to conclude that the Blessed Virgin Mary had other children a er Jesus. The truth is that there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Mary had other children a er Jesus. In a column or series of columns, I will explain why this is the case, and why these passages are misleading. Let us con nue to pray for one another and the world. God Bless, Fr. Paul July 08, 2018 Fourteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time 3

4 Donut Sunday Next Sunday, July 15th, is Donut Sunday hosted by our Knights of Columbus. Join your fellow parishioners for some delicious treats, and the even be er treat of community and fellowship. If July is your birthday month, please come and enjoy a complimentary drink and donut of your choice with your friends and The Knights. (Pick up a complimentary birthday card from the Grand Knights Table at the beginning of the donut line.) Free Coffee Refills! We hope to see you there! St. Kateri Tekakwitha On July 14th, we celebrate the Feast of the Lily of the Mohawks. St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Na ve American Woman to be canonized. Orphaned by a smallpox outbreak, Kateri survived with severe scarring and impaired eyesight. Despite tragedy, she was a devout girl at a young age, o en building crosses from s cks in the woods. When she was 18, she began secret instruc on in the Catholic Faith with French Missionaries. Her commitment to Chris anity, and vow of virginity was misunderstood and ridiculed by her fellow villagers. She escaped to a nearby mission, where she a ended Daily Mass, taught the children, and cared for the sick and the elderly. Some mes the greatest misunderstandings can come from those closest to us. Like St. Kateri, God invites us to be faithful to our commitments of faith, and to always respond in love. 50th Anniversary Of Humanae Vitae Four Week Class Here At Our Lady Of Humility In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the landmark Encyclical Humanae Vitae issued by Pope Paul VI in July 1968, the OLH Pro-Life Commi ee will be offering a four week in-depth study of this Encyclical. An Encyclical is a special papal le er, expressing the ordinary papal magisterium, issued not only to the whole Church, but also to the whole world to express the Church s teaching on some important ma er. In the case of Humanae Vitae, Pope Paul VI reaffirmed the enduring Church teaching on love and sexuality, and the Church s con nual prohibi on of birth control and steriliza on. We will be using A Study Guide to Humanae Vitae from Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life. Free Will Dona ons will be accepted to cover the cost of materials. Classes will meet a er the 8AM Saturday Morning Mass in the Hayes Community Room on the following dates: July 28th, August 4th, August 11th, and August 18th. If you have ques ons or want to reserve your spot, please contact Leslie at (847) Come find out what Pope Paul VI prophesied about the future of the world that would embrace a Culture of Death. 6 Bringing Children To Christ In Eucharis c Adora on Father Antoine Thomas Develops a Program For Kids PRINCEVILLE, Illinois, October 6, 2004 (Zenit) Thanks to a French Priest s vision and devo on to the Blessed Sacrament, hundreds of children are engaging in Eucharis c Adora on, and experiencing the real presence of Christ. Father Antoine Thomas, 46, a Priest of the Congrega on of St. John, has been working in Youth Ministry for 15 years, and began leading children s Holy Hours more than 10 years ago. Now he has started a program, Children of Hope, that helps others lead Adora on for children. The Priest, who came from Paris, shared with us how children can embrace and be enriched by spending me with the Blessed Sacrament in their schools and parishes, and what adults can do to encourage the prac ce par cularly during this Year of the Eucharist. Q: Why is it important for children to engage in Eucharis c Adora on? Father Thomas: Jesus said, Let the children come to Me ; I think we had be er obey, and bring Him the children. Pope John Paul II said back in 1996: I urge Priests, Religious, and Lay People to con nue and redouble their efforts to teach the younger genera ons the meaning and value of Eucharis c Adora on and devo on. How will young people be able to know the Lord if they are not introduced to the mystery of His presence? By learning the words of the prayer of the heart, they will be closer to the Lord, who will accompany them in their spiritual and human growth.... All interior life needs silence and in macy with Christ in order to develop. This gradual familiarity with the Lord will enable certain young people to be involved... and to take a more ac ve part in Mass; for young boys, to be near the altar is also a privileged opportunity to hear Christ s call to follow Him more radically in the priestly ministry. The Holy Father con nues to stress this importance today. What we learn as children will remain in us, and help us to stay close to Jesus. Before young children have received their First Holy Communion, Eucharis c Adora on is a great way to help them receive Jesus in their heart through spiritual communion. And a erward, it helps increase in them a desire for more frequent Communion. Hopefully, during the teen years, these same children will find in Jesus a best friend, strength, and light. They also may be more disposed to hear and follow their voca on in life. Q: What benefits have you seen from children spending me with our Eucharis c Lord? Father Thomas: The children have a great excitement about being part of this kind of Prayer Group. They enjoy being at the feet of Jesus, res ng under the loving gaze of He, who is no longer hidden in the tabernacle. The children experience a pacifica on of body, mind, and spirit. They have a deeper desire to pray, are more a en ve at Mass, and have an unshakeable Faith in the real presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Q: How do you help kids understand Adora on, and get the most out of the experience? How do you keep them focused and engaged for an en re hour? Father Thomas: None of us will ever fully understand this mystery. What we do with the children is to remind them of the love that Jesus has for all. On the night before He died 2,000 years ago, driven by love and a desire for us not to forget, He chose this way, the Eucharist, to remain close to us in a more visible way. He chose this not out of necessity, but out of His infinite and merciful love. The children are reminded of the words of consecra on, and that Jesus gave this power to all priests. Once they realize they are spending me with Jesus, they are thrilled to come each week; it is their me with Him. (From Catholic Online) Do something special this Summer, please consider coming to Eucharis c Adora on on Thursdays at 1PM, where you will have an opportunity to spend me with the Lord Jesus, in the Blessed Sacrament each week where we can ASK HIM anything. Come, bring your whole family, spend some me with the Lord, and receive His blessings! He is wai ng for you! 6 Welcome to Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church

7 Ask A Priest Q: If someone performs an evil act, either directly against us or against society, how are we supposed to love them? I think for example these people that perpetrate mass shoo ngs in schools or movie theaters. When our military personnel get sent into hos le territory, what are they supposed to do about the people who are trying to kill them? ********************************************** A: The Chris an message of loving everyone and turning the other cheek really does sound wonderful in its ideology but when push comes to shove, how do we respond to a person who hurts us, or someone we care about? It s important for us to understand exactly what love really means. In the language of St. Thomas Aquinas, love means that we will the good of the other as other. Love, therefore, is not an emo on or sen ment; it is a decision. So if you think about it, the opposite of love is not hate. Hatred is merely an emo on, a response to an ac on performed by someone. So to use your example about the person shoo ng up a school; we can hate his ac on, we can really dislike him as a person but this does not mean that we are unable to love him. The opposite of love is indifference. With indifference, we refuse to recognize that the other person is created in the image and likeness of God. We see him as less than human, as someone that does not deserve our a en on; we do not care whether he lives or dies. How do we love the person that performs a heinous act against society? I think it s important to pray. We should ask the Lord to watch over the vic ms and their families. We should pray for the perpetrator; that God might call him to conversion, that he might receive a sense of repentance, and get the help necessary to get to heaven. And then, of course, we need to pray for ourselves! If we are struggling with feelings of hatred or anger, we need to give them over to God. We need to recognize that holding on to bi erness and resentments is like drinking poison, and hoping that the other person gets sick. By loving this person, we are truly embracing the essence of our faith. As to the ques on about our military personnel, the Catechism of the Catholic Church goes into great detail about defending Peace and the principles of the Just War (see paragraph 2309 for this discussion). Immediately a er outlining the principles of Just War, the Catechism gives this descrip on about soldiers: Public authori es have the right and duty to impose on ci zens the obliga ons necessary for na onal defense. Those who are sworn to serve their country in the armed forces are servants of the security and freedom of na ons. If they carry out their duty honorably, they truly contribute to the common good of the na on and the maintenance of peace. (#2310) It is a very precarious situa on for the members of our military. When in the service of our country, they o en find themselves in harm s way. It s important to look at this as a case of jus ce. Imagine that two 10 year olds are hanging off the side of a cliff, and you can only save one of them; the first child is a complete stranger, and the other one is your daughter. Jus ce mandates that you save your own child. I know this is a limited analogy, but the soldier has a similar decision; the choice between protec ng his na on, and respec ng the unjust aggressor. Surely, we are called to love everyone, to will the good of the other as other; but some mes jus ce requires that we protect one against the other. As the Catechism points out, our soldiers are living out their voca ons, and contribu ng to the peace when they carry out their duty honorably. Let us con nue to keep our service men and women in our prayers, and thank them for their service in protec ng the well-being of our na on. Peace, Fr. Mike July 08, 2018 Fourteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time 7

He gives us the resources we need to do His work. However, do we listen to God when He calls? Do we get up on our feet and use our talent to do the work He asks of us? Remember, God doesn t call the equipped, He equips the called.
