3 A Note From The Pastor I d like to remind everyone that during Lent, Confessions on Saturdays will begin at 3:00PM instead of the usual 3:30PM. I ve had some ques ons about the veiling of images and crucifixes during Lent. As many of you had no ced, the images and crucifix in our Church were covered during the First Week of Lent, but then removed before the Second Sunday of Lent. This was due to a mistake on my part. In places and mes long past, some Churches prac ced veiling images and crucifixes during all of Lent. Prac ces varied widely un l the Counter-Reforma on in the 16th Century. A er that, images and crucifixes were covered for the final two weeks of Lent. This was the prac ce un l 1970 with the revised Missal. Therein, it gave the op on (if the Bishops Conference approved) to veil images and crucifixes beginning on the Saturday before the Fi h Sunday of Lent: The prac ce of covering crosses and images in the Church may be observed, if the Episcopal Conference decides. The U.S. Bishops never gave such permission, so technically Churches should not have been covering crosses and images unless the local bishop approved it. However, with the new English transla on of the Mass in November 2011, came a change with the op on to veil images and crucifixes beginning on the vigil of the Fi h Sunday of Lent: In the Dioceses of the United States, the prac ce of covering crosses and images throughout the Church from this Sunday may be observed. Crosses remain covered un l the end of the Celebra on of the Lord s Passion on Good Friday, but images remain covered un l the beginning of the Easter Vigil. I was under the impression that our Parish had a tradi on of veiling images and the crucifix for all of Lent, and thought to con nue it. But some were uncertain if that was indeed the case, and pointed out that it should not be observed for all of Lent. So, I apologize for the confusion. Even more, I m grateful to Juanita Alfaro for her willingness and understanding to remove the coverings un l the appropriate me. Well, I hope that clarifies the confusion! By the way, an interes ng background note that I found on the internet regarding the prac ce of veiling images and crucifixes: The new Catholic Encyclopedia says that it is based on part of the Gospel reading for the day in the La n Mass: John 11v. 54: Jesus, therefore, no longer walked about openly among the Jews (because they planned to put Him to death, a er He had raised Lazarus from the dead). The symbols of Jesus are veiled because He hid Himself at this me; also, one writer says, to remind us that His divinity was hidden during His suffering and death. 1 Finally, please a end our Parish Mission in the Church this Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings, February 28th, 29th, and March 1st at 7PM. Biblical Scholar and Theologian, Fr. James McIlhone, will give the Mission, centered on the theme of God s Mercy. Blessings, Fr. Paul 1 h p:// February 28, 2016 Third Sunday Of Lent 3

Welcome Fr. James McIlhone! This weekend our Parish Mission begins! Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, February 28th, 29th, and March 1st, at 7PM in the Church. This will be an excellent aid in helping us through our Lenten Journey. We will begin each evening at 7PM with Evening Prayer, and will conclude around 8:00 or 8:15PM. The tles for each evening s talk will be as follows: Sunday: Our God: Merciful and Just Monday: God s Mercy in The Old Testament Tuesday: Luke s Portrait of A Merciful God All are invited and welcome to a end our Parish Mission. We look forward to seeing you there! Sta ons Of The Cross Join us as we symbolically walk with the Lord on His Journey to Calvary. Sta ons of the Cross will be held each Friday of Lent at 12 Noon and 7PM in the Church. Rite Of Chris an Ini a on Of Adults This Sunday, February 28th, at the 9AM Mass, the RCIA Elect (Elect means those called to celebrate the Sacraments of Bap sm, Confirma on, and Eucharist at this Easter Vigil, March 26th) will celebrate their First Scru ny Rite. The Scru ny Rites are celebrated on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th weekends of Lent, each at a different Mass. The priest asks God to protect them from vanity, to defend them from the power of Satan, to free them from deceit, to admit the wrongs they have done, so that they may gain a pure heart. He then lays his hands on the heads of each of the Elect in an ancient sign of forgiving, healing, and empowerment. The Scru nies ask us to look within ourselves to uncover what is weak, and keeping us from Christ, to look to bring out what is good and upright in our hearts, and then to look to Christ to heal our weaknesses, and give each of us new strength to face further tempta ons. And because ALL OF US will renew our Bap sm promises at Easter, we too examine our lives. We celebrate Scru nies to keep fresh our hunger for grace and growth. We look at our life s path forward, and mark out the way we want to go. During this season of Lent, Terry Perez and Dennis Holley, are our reminder and example of faith. Please pray for our Candidates as they con nue their forma on to live life in the Catholic Faith. Their pictures along with their Sponsors await you in the southwest ves bule of the Church. Having a face to match their names always seems to help when praying. Thank you very much for your welcome, your support, your example, and your prayers. 4 Welcome to Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church

The School Librarian, Mrs. Steffen, and the Eighth Grade Teacher, Mrs. Spangle, came to support Emily at the Sec onal Compe on on February 16th. There were 36 schools represented, stated Mrs. Steffen. With each school sending its best speller, the field was truly impressive. We re thrilled to see Emily in the top four, stated Eighth Grade Teacher, Mrs. Spangle. This is a great honor for our School and community. O en, people face poverty, infrequent pastoral care, and lack of spaces for worship, presen ng challenges as they try to live lives of faith. Your support of the Collec on for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe (CCEE) helps provide grants for projects to restore the Church and build the future in these areas. In Armenia, the recovery from a devasta ng earthquake in the late 1980s, and the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, has been difficult and slow. Many children in Armenia live on the street because of poor family situa ons, or the need to earn their own money. The Sisters of the Immaculate Concep on have used a grant from CCEE to fund a summer camp for 850 children ages 8 to 15. The camp is provided for children who are orphans, live in extreme poverty, or live in poor isolated villages. At camp, the children receive much-needed rest, along with physical and spiritual support, all in a nurturing environment. Local and interna onal volunteers help create an atmosphere of safety and trust, while guiding and mentoring the children. Some of the camp ac vi es include a ending cateche cal classes, going hiking, and on field trips, and par cipa ng in sports, and ac ng in theatrical presenta ons. While at camp, the children can experience the encouraging love and support of God and others. Please be generous in the Second Collec on next weekend, March 5th and 6th. Your gi will con nue to restore the Church, and build the future in Central and Eastern Europe. 8 Welcome to Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church
