3 A Note From The Pastor A special thank you for the beau ful Christmas cards and gi s, the gree ngs and homemade goodies, and your prayers. I m also grateful may God bless you! This weekend we celebrate the Bap sm of the Lord, a mystery and a somewhat theological event. Of course, Jesus had no need to be bap zed; He didn t have any sin, including original sin. But in this event, Jesus sanc fies water to be used in the future Sacrament of Bap sm. The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus at His Bap sm; when Chris ans are bap zed, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is given to them. A voice from heaven declares: You are My beloved Son; with you I am well pleased; when a Chris an is bap zed he/she becomes a son/daughter of God, pleasing to the Father. With the Feast of the Bap sm of the Lord, the Christmas Season ends Sunday night. On Monday, we return to Ordinary Time un l Ash Wednesday, March 6th, when Lent begins. During Ordinary Time, we don t focus exclusively on one par cular mystery of Christ. The mystery of Christ is simply celebrated in its fullness during Ordinary Time. I wanted to update all of you regarding our Home For Christmas Drive, as I now have the final counts in. A er all four weeks, we raised $19,631.21! That s a li le more than enough to buy three houses! I will have a follow-up announcement in the future regarding the use of this Second Collec on, and the impact it has had. Again, thanks to all of you for your generosity! It s that me of year, and so I thought I would remind us that, during the Sign of Peace at Mass, some may not want to exchange a handshake or hug due to the flu season/germs. Some may not want to hold hands during the Our Father either because of health concerns, or because it is not a formal part of the Mass. In such cases, please accept a simple wave of the hand. Save the Date: The Light of the World Retreat is returning to St. Patrick s in Wadsworth in collabora on with OLH on Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday evening, February 15th 18th. This retreat is a great way to renew one s rela onship with the Lord Jesus, and can really set the tone for a prayerful year. Please prayerfully consider a ending, and see the bulle n for more details. Next weekend at all of the Masses we will have a Second Collec on to support the Church in La n America. The needs and challenges facing the Church in La n America and the Caribbean are great: There are few teaching resources and a poor infrastructure. Your prayerful and monetary support will help to spread the faith to people who are open to the Catholic Faith. In the near future, we will be formally renewing and revamping our gree ng and welcoming ministry. Please prayerfully consider par cipa ng; more informa on will follow in the coming weeks. This ini a ve is part of the ongoing evangeliza on and renewal process in our Parish. Let us resolve once again to be faithful to the promises made at our bap sm, and let s also pray for greater reverence in the world for the Sacrament of the Eucharist. God Bless, Fr. Soup Kitchen Do something helpful this New Year. Thursday, January 24th, is Our Lady of Humility s commitment to provide volunteers to help with the Soup Kitchen at Holy Family Services (the old St. Bartholomew Parish) located at: 914 8th Street, Waukegan. The Soup Kitchen is always the fourth Thursday of every month. Food prepara on begins at 3PM, dinner is served at 5:30PM, followed by clean an-up. We are usually done by 7PM. Any me that you can give is greatly appreciated. We are in desperate need of more assistance from our Parishioners on a regular basis. We usually have lots of volunteers for the holidays, but your help is needed every month! If you have any ques ons, or would like to volunteer, er, please call Pat at: (847) Religious Educa on News There will be No Religious Educa on Classes this Sunday, January 13th. They will resume next Sunday, January 20th. Donut Sunday Next Sunday, January 20th, is Donut Sunday hosted by our Knights of Columbus. Join your fellow parishioners for some delicious treats, and the even be er treat of community and fellowship. If January is your birthday month, please come and enjoy a complimentary drink and donut of your choice with your friends and The Knights. (Pick up a complimentary birthday card from the Grand Knights Table at the beginning of the donut line.) Free Coffee Refills! We hope to see you there! Catholic Schools Week & Open House Our Lady of Humility School will be having an Open House for both current and prospec ve families. This is an opportunity for all of our current families to come and see some of the great things the students and teachers are doing. Please mark your calendars for the OLH Open House on Sunday, January 27th, from 10AM 12 Noon. If you know of any OLH Alumni, please welcome them to the Open House as well to visit the School again. Knights Of Columbus Free Throw Championship The Our Lady of Humility Council of Knights of Columbus will host the local Free Throw Championship next Saturday, January 19th, in the Parish Center. Registra on begins at 9:30AM, and Compe on at 10AM. All girls and boys ages 9-14 are encouraged to par cipate, and will compete in their respec ve age divisions. The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners advancing through local, district, regional, and state compe ons. Permission of a parent or guardian is required. A copy of proof of age (such as a birth cer ficate) is also required. There is no cost to par cipate. Please call (224) with any ques ons. Our Lady Of Humility s Food Pantry Is in need of Spaghe Sauce, Canned Tuna, Canned Fruit, and Jell-O. Non-perishable food can be dropped off at the Rectory Monday Friday, from 9AM 3:30PM, or brought to the northwest ves bule of the Church on Saturdays or Sundays before Mass. 6 Our Lady Of Humility Women s Club We want to thank everyone from our Parish (Church and School) for your generous dona ons in making our Christmas Cra Fair and Bazaar a huge success! We are truly blessed! Just a friendly reminder as you are taking down your Christmas decora ons and thinking about re ring them, changing your Christmas décor, or are no longer keeping those Christmas items/decora ons, please consider dona ng those items to the Our Lady of Humility Women s Club. We are always looking for large baskets too! You can drop off the items in the Church Ves bule (between the Church and Parish Center) in the two Blue Bins, and we will store them for our 2019 Christmas Cra Fair and Bazaar. Our Lady Of Humility Women s Club February Mee ng On Thursday, February 7th, at 6:30PM: Our Lady of Humility Women s Club will have a White Elephant Gi Exchange. A White Elephant is a gi that was given to you which you will not use/do not want, or is a gently used item from your home. If you have never had the opportunity to par cipate in a White Elephant Gi Exchange, it s hysterically funny and enjoyable! Bring your wrapped gi, and join in on the fun! Refreshments will be served following our mee ng. Ladies! Start 2019 With Fellowship, Fun, And Service To Our Parish/School The Our Lady of Humility Women s Club meets on the first Thursday of every month (except January, July, and August) at 6:30PM (unless otherwise noted) in the Hayes Community Room. Our Mission Statement: Through the effec ve u liza on of our God-given talents, we shall endeavor to provide friendship among the membership, while assis ng the Parish with designated Chris an social, service, and spiritual ac vi es. All Ladies from the Parish (Church and School) are invited to join our Women s Club. Annual Membership Dues are $10.00 Per Person (A BARGAIN!!). If you would like to join the Women s Club yet haven t had the me to, you can join at any me. Your Sisters in Christ Welcome YOU! Our Lady Of Humility Women s Club Upcoming February Events Bingo For The Residents At The Grove By The Lake Nursing Home In Zion On Thursday, February 21st, from 1:30 3PM: We will host Bingo for the residents at The Grove By The Lake in Zion. The Grove is an Annual Service Project that Our Lady of Humility Women s Club host. The residents look forward to Bingo, and we enjoy hos ng. Volunteers are to meet in the Lobby at 12:30PM at The Grove. Please encourage as many women as you can to par cipate, as many are needed to assist the residents. Please bring purchased and packaged cookies, etc. (no homemade goods due to changes in state law). It is through the generosity of our Parishioners that we have sufficient prizes for the residents. Thank you! Also, the Women s Club will be collec ng items to donate to the residents. The residents always appreciate all we do for them. Items such as casual, everyday clothing (large), toiletries, books, shirts, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, lo ons, sta onery, jewelry, small boxes of purchased and packaged candy or cookies, and anything you feel would make a nice gi for a nursing home resident are appreciated. Anything you would like to receive as a gi, would truly make the residents happy. There is a box designated for the residents at The Grove By The Lake in the Ves bule between the Church and Parish Center for items being donated for this cause. Thank you from the Ladies of Our Lady of Humility Women s Club, and the residents at The Grove By The Lake, and thank you for helping to bring some cheer to those less fortunate. Dreading The Onset Of Cabin Fever? We have the solu on! Come join our OLH Bowling League. We have a ninepin no tap league that bowls at Sunset Bowl on Lewis Avenue in Waukegan once a month. We bowl on the third Saturday of each month, from September through May. The cost is just $15.00 per bowler. This is a no stress, purely relaxed bowling experience. Our goal is a fun night out. We even have a cheering sec on. The next scheduled bowling is on Saturday, January 19th at 6:30PM. 7 OLH Teen Ministry On December 22, 2018, the teens volunteered at the Simbang Gabi Novena Mass and Recep on. They acted as Greeters, distributed programs, and Monique was one of the Lectors during Mass. Then during the Recep on, they sold raffle ckets/ran the raffle give away and helped serve dinner. Monique, pictured above, was the lead teen on this service program. Pictured above le to right: Kaeli, Kassandra, Yessenia, Gabbi, Carlos, and Garrre. Eucharis c Adora on Drawing Closer To Jesus The best kind of friend is the one with whom you can spend me without having to say anything. You can just share the moment, and enjoy each other s company, knowing your rela onship is deeper than the spoken word. That kind of silent communica on is what takes place between you and Jesus when you par cipate in Eucharis c Adora on. Eucharis c Adora on is the spiritual prac ce of spending me in the presence of the exposed Host. Eucharis c Adora on provides us with a chance to be with our Savior one on one. Through this prac ce, we are invited to spend me alone with God in His real, physical form, and to bring to Jesus all of our cares, concerns, prayers, hopes, and thoughts. We set aside a special me, a respite from our hec c modern lives, to create a personal space in which to meet our God. By doing so, we grow more in tune with God. We put ourselves in posi on to talk to Him, and also to listen. We reserve a me and a space when we ask Jesus to come into our hearts and minds, and when we walk away, we are transformed. Even the most holy people we can think of have found blessings, grace, and strength in Eucharis c Adora on. Jesus has made Himself the Bread of Life to give us life, Mother Teresa once said. Night and day, He is there. If you really want to grow in love, come back to the Eucharist, come back to that Adora on. Do something special in this New Year, please consider coming to Eucharis c Adora on on Thursdays at 1PM. Come, bring your whole family, spend some me with the Lord, and receive His blessings! 8 Fireside Theater Trip My Fair Lady Dear Parishioners and Friends, MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! The Co-Ed Seniors Group has scheduled the following trip to the Fireside Theater in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Join us on: Saturday March 30, 2019 For My Fair Lady O en called the World s Greatest Musical. My Fair Lady is a Broadway Classic which won Six Tony Awards including Best Musical. Its popular film adapta on took home Eight Oscars including Best Picture. My Fair Lady has entertained over a billion people worldwide with its enchan ng Cinderella Story about Eliza Dooli le, a bedraggled, cockney flower girl who is transformed into an elegant lady by the brilliant and irascible Professor Higgins by teaching her the proper way to speak. It is a beau ful show filled with gorgeous costumes, breath-taking dancing, rib- ckling comedy, and an unforge able score featuring such hits as: Wouldn t It Be Lovely, I m Ge ng Married In The Morning, and I Could Have Danced All Night. This trip will depart promptly at 8:30AM from the South End of the Church/School parking lot, and return approximately between 5:30-6PM. Please park on the EAST side of the bus. Thank you. A dona on of $90.00 Per Person (Check made payable to OLH and print Fireside Theater on the Memo Line ) covers the cost of a deluxe coach to the Fireside Theater and return to the Church, a wonderful gourmet meal, a fantas c performance, and gratui es at the theater.
