9 Ask A Priest Q: I have heard a lot of talk recently about discovering my gi s of the Spirit. Does everyone have a gi? How do I go about discovering mine? A: About 10 years ago, a new business opened shop in my parents neighborhood; The Kabbalah Center. I remember laughing when I ini ally saw it, but could only shake my head and sigh as I no ced how much traffic was passing through those doors. I reflected out loud, So many people searching for answers, but so few that know where to look. Perhaps you have no ced this as well; the Catholic Church has developed a reputa on for being boring or uninspiring. People have developed the iden ty of being Spiritual, but not Religious. In their opinion, the Catholic Church has nothing to offer. Eastern spirituality, in the opinion of so many folks, can teach the Church a thing or two about God! This loss of awareness of her mys cal Tradi on is one of the most regre able things that has happened to the Holy Mother Church in recent years. The Truth of the ma er is that, ever since her earliest days, the Church has consistently enjoyed an outpouring of the gi s of the Spirit! On Pentecost Sunday, the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles. Those floodgates of grace have been open ever since, even when we have failed to pay them very much a en on. Charism is the theological term used to describe the extraordinary power given to the Chris an by the Holy Spirit for the good of the Church. Let s spend a few moments analyzing that sentence. Charisms are extraordinary they go beyond the everydayness of our lives. They involve power (in Greek: dynamis) they dynamically allow us to affect the world around us. Each of us has a Charism, or Charisms no one can feign powerlessness. Charisms should not be confused with voca ons, although they may go hand in hand. You may have the Charism of heroic pa ence that enables you to be a good mother, but you have the voca on of motherhood. Finally, these gi s are not for us, but for the Church they are not for selfish use, or for profit, but to help others get to Heaven. For a good sample list of Charisms, let us turn to 1 Corinthians 12. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gi s of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varie es of tongues; to another interpreta on of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distribu ng them individually to each person as he wishes Some people God has designated in the Church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gi s of healing, assistance, administra on, and varie es of tongues Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gi s. Now, when St. Paul talks about a Charism like healing, he is not talking about a doctor who prescribes medica on. An individual with this Charism is literally able to heal people with a touch or a prayer (in the same way Jesus and the Apostles did). This might sound incredulous, but this is a legi mate, authen c gi of the Spirit. Perhaps one of you has this Charism, just wai ng to be discovered! Charisms take all shapes and sizes. St. Joseph of Cuper no had the Charism of flying (and not in an airplane!). St. Padre Pio could read the souls of his penitents. St. Vincent Ferrer had the power to raise people from the dead! Despite the diversity in Charisms, one constant remains; these great saints all used the gi s they were given to glorify God and convert souls for Christ. So how do we go about discovering our par cular Charisms? Well, as St. Paul men ons in the above passage, some people are given the gi of discernment of spirits; it is their Charism to help other people discover their Charisms! From October 6th-9th, St. Patrick Church in Wadsworth will be offering the Light of the World Retreat. This is a great forum for prayer and reflec on, and to interact with likeminded people. In the future, OLH hopes to host a Called and Gi ed Workshop, which specializes in discernment of Charisms. In addi on, we have several people at the Parish, both clergy and lay leaders, who are available for individual spiritual direc on. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at the Parish Office to set up an appointment. Dear friends, each of us have our gi s to share. May we be wise in our discernment of these Charisms, and fearless in manifes ng them to the world, that we might win many souls for Christ. Peace, Fr. Mike September 24, 2017 Twenty-Fi h Sunday In Ordinary Time 9
