3 Infant Baptism ( 6 ) The Sacrament of Bap sm for children (newborn 6 years old) is celebrated in our parish each Saturday at 10:00. Bap sms on the first and third Saturdays of the month are celebrated in English, and in Spanish on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month. A Bap sm prepara on class is required for parents and godparents before scheduling your child's Bap sm. These classes are offered on the second Tuesday of each month. Childcare is provided (children must be po y-trained). 4 THE PERSON IN BIOETHICS CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING QWhen is the human person especially endangered? Especially at the beginning of life and at the end of life, human beings cannot or can hardly defend their right to life, their human dignity, and their personal integrity by themselves. They need another person who recognizes the inviolable dignity and sanc ty of another living human being, who loves this life and accepts it, who helps and cares for, protects, nourishes, and supports it. Q The life of a handicapped or sick person has inalienable dignity, too; it is inconceivable that it should in any case be considered less valuable or worthless. (Cf. Encyclical Evangelium Vitae ) Can one select from among embryos conceived outside the body? Discarding an embryo because of a diagnosis that it has a gene c disorder, for instance, trisomy 21 (=Down syndrome), violates the precept of respect for human dignity and the fundamental right to life and bodily integrity. At the same me, it violates the prohibi on in the cons tu onal law of many na ons against discrimina on based on a handicap, which protects an embryo with a probable gene defect just as much as a handicapped human being who is born. Q Why does the Church reject abortion in principle? Every human being, from the moment of concep on, has absolute rights and inviolable personal dignity. Therefore, the killing of an embryo is always morally objec onable regardless of the circumstances in which the child was conceived, the stage of development in which this new human being happens to be, or the health problems with which he will come into the world. An embryo does not develop into a human being, rather he develops as a human being.

5 Therefore, an abor on is in every case the deliberate killing of an innocent human being. However, as long as Chris ans do not do everything possible to assist pregnant women who are in difficulty and to make it easier for them to decide in favor of their child, their commitment against abor on and laws that condone it will not seem very credible. The mother's right to freedom, which is o en weighed against the child's right to life, is situated on another level and must not be pi ed against the right to life. Q What can a woman do in an unplanned pregnancy? In crisis situa ons, and also in the case of an unplanned pregnancy, one can turn to any priest or directly to Catholic counseling centers. All of them are instructed to welcome people lovingly and not to judge them. No one should be le alone in such a situa on, and various kinds of help and support are available. Every child who, rather than being born, is condemned unjustly to being aborted, bears the face of Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, who even before he was born, and then just after birth, experienced the world s rejection.
