Then Unlocking The Mystery of The Bible Parish Bible Study is for you. This unique Bible Study Program makes reading the Bible not only easy, but even exci ng. But with this unique approach, we will learn about the major people, places, events, and themes of the Bible ge ng the big picture of the Bible from crea on and Adam and Eve (the Book of Genesis), all the way through the Resurrec on of Jesus Christ, and the beginnings of the Catholic Church (Acts of the Apostles). Perhaps for the first me in your life, you will understand the overview of the Bible story. This then makes subsequent Bible Study and reading understandable, and the Sunday Mass Readings come alive like never before. Come and learn more about the Greatest Story Ever Told!. Unlocking The Mystery of The Bible will be offered at Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church in Beach Park on Tuesday Evenings from 7PM 8:30PM. This is an eight-session program beginning September 26th, and ending on December 5th. We will not meet every Tuesday. Our first mee ng will be in the Church. 7 Ask A Priest Q: In the Creed, we say that we believe that Jesus will come to judge the living and the dead. How does this work? I thought that we were judged as soon as we died? Are we judged twice; once at death, and again when Jesus comes back? And if we are judged only when Jesus comes back, where do all the dead people go in the mean me? A: Let me just start by saying how impressed I have been with the ques ons I have received so far. It is great to see that desire to learn and grow, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to help in whatever way I can. Believe it or not, there is actually a whole branch of theology dedicated to the ques ons raised above. Eschatology, derived from the Greek word eschatos (last) and -logy (study of) is the study of the final things! Tradi onally, there are four last things that need our considera on and a en on; Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell. As a special bonus, Catholic Eschatology is divided into two subcategories; Individual and Cosmic/ Universal. It is this division that caused the ini al confusion expressed in the ques on, but as we will see, the ambiguity is quickly removed. First, let us look at the Individual Eschatology; the road down which we must all travel alone. The first step on the journey is Death, the separa on of the body and soul. Death is a consequence of Adam s sin (Genesis 2:17), which signals the end of our proba on period. The state of our souls at the moment of death determines our eternal des ny. The next reality to deal with is the Par cular Judgment. As the Catechism explains: Each man receives his eternal retribu on in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death, in a par cular judgment that refers his life to Christ: either entrance into the blessedness of Heaven through a purifica on, or immediately, or immediate and everlas ng damna on (#1022). There is no wai ng around; we are each individually judged at the moment of death, and we immediately go to Heaven, or Purgatory, or Hell. Although we normally only consider Individual Eschatology, there is a whole other subcategory to consider. Cosmic/Universal Eschatology explores the reality that we will experience as a team. The first ordeal that humanity will endure is the End of the World. The End of the World is promised by Christ (Mark 13:32), and is discussed in detail throughout Sacred Scripture. We do not know when the end is coming; it will take us all by surprise. Jesus Himself will return as the Victor of Crea on, to judge the world with fire! Christ s second coming will also trigger the Resurrec on of the Dead. At this me, the bodies of the dead will rise from their graves. The recently resuscitated will be gathered together with all the living, and we will all be presented before Christ. When all of humanity is thus gathered together, we will undergo what is referred to as the General Judgment. Christ Jesus will be our Judge, and He will separate us one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats (Ma hew 25:31-46). Those on the le will be led off to eternal torment, and the righteous will be led off to eternal life. The final step in the Cosmic Eschatology is the Consumma on of All Things. The present heavens (i.e., outer space) and earth will be destroyed, and a New Heaven and New Earth will take their place. From there, Christ the King will reign with His elect in glory forever. Amen! So to answer your ques on, yes, you are judged as soon as you die. Those who have preceded us in death are not in a giant cosmic wai ng room, nor are their souls wandering the earth ; they are either in Heaven, or Purgatory, or Hell. Although it might seem a bit redundant, we ARE judged twice; once individually, and once universally. Let us give ourselves totally over to Christ from this moment forward, so He who we do not doubt to be our loving Savior, we might also recognize as our merciful Judge. Peace, Fr. Mike August 20, 2017 Twen eth Sunday In Ordinary Time 7
