3 A Note From The Pastor Last Wednesday was Ash Wednesday, and Lent began. Lent is a grace-filled season in which we should turn back to God with all our hearts; we should strive with all our might to make Jesus the center of our lives. Many years ago, as I was preparing to leave for basic training in the Army, some veterans gave me the following advice: What you put into it is what you get out of it. How true this is when we re talking about Lent and the spiritual life. As a reminder: We have Sta ons of the Cross every Friday at 12 Noon and 7PM. We will have our Parish Lenten Mission on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, March 4th, 5th, and 6th, at 7PM in the Church followed by a Recep on in the Parish Center. Fr. Anthony Jelinek will give the Mission. He will also hear Confessions from 6PM to 6:45PM each day prior to the Mission. Please see this bulle n for more details. Fr. Anthony is a popular retreat leader; I m sure you will greatly appreciate his inspiring words of wisdom. A few months ago, I asked for volunteers for a new ministry opportunity: serving as a Mass Sacristan. Generally speaking, Mass Sacristans would ensure that everything is setup correctly before Mass, and make sure everything is put away a erwards. They also open or close the Church (when needed). A few volunteers came forward, for which I am grateful. However, we are s ll in need of Mass Sacristans for the 7AM and 11AM Sunday Masses. We have the 5PM and 9AM Masses covered. I ask that you prayerfully consider whether or not God is calling you to this sacred ministry. Training would be provided by me. Please contact me by ing me at: (frpaul@ourladyo umility.org), or by calling the Rectory if you are interested in par cipa ng in this special, sacred ministry. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your generosity on two counts. First, I received a le er of acknowledgment from Fr. Peter Wojcik, Director of Parish Vitality and Mission, thanking our community for raising over $2,400 last year to assist our brothers and sisters affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, and the earthquakes in Mexico. The Archdiocese of Chicago raised over $250,000 during the impromptu appeal. Second, I received an from Fr. Charles Ssenyondo in Uganda. He says he misses the snow, but not the cold! He wanted me to pass on his expression of gra tude for our overwhelming love and support. The OLH community has sponsored at least 15 Seminarians, along with addi onal funding. Truly this community has made a huge difference in promo ng priests across the world; Fr. Charles and I are sincerely grateful for your generosity! As I men oned last week, my hope is that we are very inten onal about entering into the discipline of Lent: may we all sincerely invest in a ending only to the essen als, to make more room and me in our lives for God, prayer, and reaching out to help others. God Bless, Fr. Paul February 18, 2018 First Sunday Of Lent 3

4 Upcoming Parish Mission Be Sober And Vigilant March 4th 6th, 2018 Mark Your Calendars Now! We will have our Parish Lenten Mission on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, March 4th, 5th, and 6th, at 7PM in the Church. The Title of our Parish Lenten Mission is Be Sober And Vigilant. Fr. Anthony Jelinek will give the Mission. Here is an outline of the Mission: Sunday, March 4th: Climbing The Mountain Of Our Faith Monday, March 5th: Take Up Your Cross And Follow Me Tuesday, March 6th: Our Sanc fica on Also, Fr. Anthony will be hearing Confessions from 6-6:45PM before each Mission. Here is a brief bio of Fr. Anthony: Father Anthony Jelinek, a na ve of Hungary, was ordained June 19, He worked as a Parish Priest for nine years. A er escaping persecu on in Communist Hungary in 1982, he served as a Hungarian Pastor in Milwaukee, and then as an Associate Pastor at St. Jude Parish in the Milwaukee Archdiocese. Father Anthony also had a broadcas ng program on Channel 17 in Milwaukee with his Cateche cal Bible Puppet Show. He served as Chaplain of St. Joseph Nursing Home for 15 years. In 1996, he began working full- me in Marytown, and helped out part- me there since 1986, and con nues as to this day. Wherever Father was assigned, he founded the Family Holy Hour and Ministry which is s ll ac ve currently in St. Joseph Parish in Round Lake. With the start of the Jubilee Year in 2000, Father became an ac ve member of the American Associa on of Chris an Counselors. During his Priestly life, he has counseled couples and individuals with different issues and concerns, and con nues to do so. Father Anthony regularly gives numerous retreats for different Religious Orders across the United States. Father has also given many Laity Retreats, and con nues to serve as the Spiritual Director of The Legion of Mary for Lake County, Illinois. Father also led many Pilgrimages to Religious Shrines throughout the world. Father s favorite sports are soccer, ice hockey, basketball, ping pong, and tennis. He loves his Priesthood, and those people to whom God has entrusted his Priestly Service and Ministry. Mark your calendars now! Come join us for a spiritually upli ing Parish Mission! It will help us all to climb that mountain of our faith, and follow Jesus this Lent. We will have a Recep on every night of the Mission immediately following the Mission in the Parish Center. We hope to see you there! 4 Welcome to Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church

Rite Of Chris an Ini a on Of Adults How can every Catholic make Lent a me of purifica on and enlightenment? We can a end weekday Mass. We can reflect on the Creed, taking each statement of belief and asking ourselves if we do believe, and what it means in our everyday lives. We can go to Adora on and to Confession. We can a end our Parish Penance Service. We can pray the Sta ons of the Cross, pray the Liturgy of the Hours, pray the Rosary. We must pray, every day. We can fast from food, TV, foul language, gossip, etc. We can give alms, in a genuinely sacrificial ma er, to the poor. As Catholics, we know all of these things. What we must pray for is a conversion of the heart. We don t have to seek far to hear God speak to us. The Church in her wisdom provides us in the Liturgy of the Word at Mass what our hearts yearn to hear. In the Lenten Liturgies, the Church prays what she believes and teaches, and in word and sacrament the Lord directs us toward His Divine Heart. Eucharis c Adora on Could You Not Watch One Hour With Me? Jesus waits for us in the Blessed Sacrament. He waits for our li le acts of faith, adora on, love, thanksgiving, repentance, repara on, and charity that we can offer Him as we contemplate His Divine Majesty in the Blessed Sacrament. St. Alphonsus Liguori wrote: Of all devo ons, that of adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the greatest a er the Sacraments, the one dearest to God, and the one most helpful to us. The Eucharist is a priceless treasure: By not only celebra ng the Eucharist, but also by praying before it outside of Mass, we are enabled to make contact with the very wellsprings of Grace Pope John Paul II in one of his homilies said, It is pleasant to spend me with Him, to lie close to His breast like the Beloved Disciple (cf. Jn 13:25), and to feel the infinite love present in His heart If, in our me, Chris ans must be dis nguished by the art of prayer, how can we not feel a renewed need to spend me in spiritual conversa on, in silent adora on, in hear elt love before Christ present in the Most Holy Sacrament? Do something meaningful during this Lent, please consider coming to Eucharis c Adora on on Thursdays at 1PM. Come, bring your whole family, spend some me with the Lord, and receive His blessings! He is wai ng for you! February 18, 2018 First Sunday Of Lent 7

9 Ask A Priest Q: Which of the Ten Commandments is the hardest to follow? A: In the Gospel narra ve, a scholar of the law asks Jesus a remarkably similar ques on; Which of the Commandments is the greatest? Jesus response is quite memorable, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul, and all your strength, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. (cf. Mark 12:28-34). In this beau ful response, Jesus succinctly summarizes not only the en rety of the Law and the Prophets, but encompasses the 10 Commandments as well. In His response, Jesus iden fies three dis nct groups: God, Others, and Myself. To be a fully integrated person, I need to constantly grow in my rela onship with all three. Who is God? God is the Creator. When we look at everything else in the universe (money, possessions, sports, our children, our own desires, pleasure, me); these are not God! In order to love God with all our heart, all our mind, all our soul, and all our strength, we must reorientate every aspect of our lives back towards God. We are s ll allowed to have fun, and go on vaca on, and enjoy pleasurable things, but we cannot allow those things to take precedence over God. The first 3 Commandments deal exclusively with our rela onship to God. We hold God higher in our hearts than all created things (Commandment 1). We do not profane God s name (2), and We give God the worship and adora on that are His due (3). It is only through faithful adherence to these three Commandments that we are able to Love God in the manner to which Christ calls us. The second group which demands our love and respect is Others. This group includes every person in the world who is not me! In order to carry out the Commandment of Loving our neighbor, we need to recognize that others are created in the image and likeness of God; they are not objects for me to use for my own personal gra fica on. The next five Commandments deal with others, and how I am called to act (or not act) towards them in order to demonstrate my love for them. I am called to love, honor, and respect my parents, and all those who have legi mate authority over me (4). I am to respect the lives of other people, and not put them in harm s way through my selfishness (5). I am to recognize that the bodies of others are Temples of the Holy Spirit, and not playthings for me to use (6). I am not to take things that do not belong to me, or inten onally damage the property of another (7). Finally, I am to respect the reputa ons of others, and not cause them harm through careless use of my speech (8). The final group might not seem obvious, but it is just as important as the first two. Only one person can claim membership in this group; namely, my own Self! This of course makes perfect sense; Jesus tells us to Love your neighbor as yourself. If I do not first love and take care of my own health and well-being, how could I ever hope to accomplish this task? The final two Commandments are designed to assist us in loving and taking care of ourselves. I should not allow my thoughts or concerns to focus on another person; jealousy and rivalry, bi erness and anger, hurt me much more than they hurt others (9). Finally, I should not concern myself with the goods of another; cove ng their possessions will only bring on self-pity (10). Which of these Commandments is the most difficult? From personal experience, I would argue that the 1st Commandment takes the cake. Our fallen human nature seeks to replace God with other things, most notably, with our own selfish inclina ons. We need to fight against this inclina on at every moment of our lives, and we need to turn ourselves over to God constantly in prayer to give us the strength to overcome it. The other 9 Commandments only make sense in light of our total self-surrender to God. As you examine your conscience, perhaps you are aware of several viola ons that have damaged your rela onships with God, others, and self. Use this Lenten Season to once again surrender yourself totally over to God, that He might support you in all your other rela onships. Come to the Sacrament of Confession, and receive God s grace, so that you might once again be able to love God with all your heart, and your neighbor as yourself. Peace, Fr. Mike February 18, 2018 First Sunday Of Lent 9
