3 ASSOCIATE PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 T oday (August 6 th ) the Church commemorates the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. We read in today s gospel that Jesus took three of His apostles with Him up a mountain and was transfigured before them; His face shone like the sun and His clothes became white as light. The transfiguration was a change of Christ s external appearance which gave the apostles there present a glimpse at the splendor and glory which Christ Jesus would merit through His passion and death on the Cross. This was to strengthen the apostles because it gave them a glimpse of the glory held in store for Christ s followers. Before the Transfiguration took place, Christ had asked His apostles who people say that He is (Mt. 16:13-20). After Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised (v. 21). The gospel records that Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him saying God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you (v. 22). For Peter, suffering was incompatible with being the Son of God. Suffering was incompatible with glory. In the Transfiguration, Christ gave a glimpse of the glory He would merit through His passion, death, and resurrection. He gave a glimpse of the glory the apostles would attain in order to strengthen them. The Preface (prayer before the Eucharistic Prayer) of today s Mass sums this up well: For he revealed his glory in the presence of chosen witnesses and filled with the greatest splendor that bodily form which he shares with all humanity, that the scandal of the Cross might be removed from the hearts of his disciples and that he might show how in the Body of the whole Church is to be fulfilled what so wonderfully shone forth first in its head. The Transfiguration also strengthens us to take up our crosses daily and follow Christ Jesus, trusting that He will bring us to the glory of heaven. The glory that the apostles glimpsed is meant for us. In his first letter, St. John says, Beloved, we are God s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is (1 Jn 3:2). Writing to the Philippians, St. Paul says the Lord Jesus Christ will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body (Phil. 3:21). If we are faithful to Christ, He will change our lowly bodies and we shall be like him. The Collect (Opening) Prayer of today s Mass highlights our hope of being conformed to Christ: O God, who in the glorious Transfiguration of your only Begotten son confirmed the mysteries of faith by the witness of the Fathers and wonderfully prefigured our full adoption to sonship, grant, we pray, to your servants, that, listening to the voice of your beloved son, we may merit to become co-heirs with him. Nghe thấy vậy, các môn đệ ngã sấp xuống và hết sức sợ hãi. Bấy giờ Chúa Giêsu đến gần, động đến các ông và bảo: "Các con hãy đứng dậy, đừng sợ". Ngước mắt lên, các ông thấy chẳng còn ai, trừ ra một mình Chúa Giêsu. Và trong lúc từ trên núi đi xuống, Chúa Giêsu đã ra lệnh cho các ông rằng: "Các con không được nói với ai về việc đã thấy, cho tới khi Con Người từ cõi chết sống lại". Đó là lời Chúa. The role of the catechist is a vital ministry to the Church. According to St. Pope John Paul II, catechesis is a sacred and inalienable right...the Church has always considered catechesis one of her primary tasks...christ gave the apostles a final command - to make disciples of all na ons and to teach them to observe all that He has commanded Catechesis always has been and always will be a work for which the whole Church must feel responsible and must wish to be responsible. (CT 1, 14-15) It is a gi that has tremendous value to the global community at large because through the catechist's word and ac on, the message of Christ con nues to have a place in all human affairs. The work of catechists depends on the witness of the Church for full effect. As Pope Paul VI said, People today listen more to witness than they do to teachers and if they do listen to teachers it is because they are witnesses. El primero, una visión que el profeta Daniel reporta, era muy conocido por Jesús y sus apóstoles. Es una poderosa y memorable visión del cielo. Tiene llamaradas de fuego, ruedas encendidas, el sabio anciano y el Hijo del Hombre. Es claro que Daniel vio algo. Pero, fue un sueño? Fue algo real? O fue solamente un mito astuto? Pedro no quiere que su visión sea confundida de igual manera! Nos cuenta el Evangelio de san Marcos lo que él y sus amigos Santiago y Juan vieron cuando subieron un día a la montaña con Jesús. Jesús les ordenó a los tres testigos que no dijeran nada hasta que el Hijo del Hombre resucitara de entre los muertos (Marcos 9:9). Por si los lectores del Evangelio dan por descontada la historia o simplemente la descartan como un mito piadoso, Pedro escribe su propia versión de la Transfiguración de Jesús en su segunda carta a la Iglesia. Escribe con autoridad, como testigo ocular.
