3 PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 This coming Tuesday, December 8th, Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the Holy Father, Pope Francis will inaugurate the Jubilee of Mercy by the sign of the opening of the door in the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome. Likewise, on December 13th, Bishop John Quinn will join the bishops across the world in opening a Holy Door at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona. The Holy Door is a Sacramental expression of Jesus, that calls us to conversion. The book of blessings says that all construction, design, and decoration should stand as a symbol of Christ book of blessings 1216). And the aim of the Jubilee of Mercy is to lead us to God our Father, full of mercy and compassion for us, sinners, so that we may receive the caress of a forgiving and loving Father. The door is Christ, He said: I am the door, if anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pastures (John 10:9) when Pope Francis announced the Jubilee of Mercy he said: I have decided to announce an Extraordinary Jubilee which has at its center the Mercy of God. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live in the light of the word of the Lord: Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful (cf. Lk 6:36). And this especially applies to confessors! So much mercy! Also the Holy Father wants the center of the Jubilee to be the center in two important sacraments, namely: Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist. It is important that this moment be linked, first and foremost, to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to the celebration of the Holy Eucharist with a reflection on mercy. (letter to archbishop Fisichella on September 1, 2015) Our parish of Ss Peter and Paul will continue every Saturday and during the week days after Mass to offer the sacrament of reconciliation for those who want to experience the Mercy of God. On Wednesday, December 9th Bishop Quinn will be coming to Mankato for the celebration of the Jubilee of Mercy. The venue will be at the Chapel of the Loyola High School with the talk of Bishop Quinn at 7 pm, followed by the Sacrament of Confession. The logo and the motto together provide a fitting summary of what the Jubilee Year is all about. The motto, Merciful Like the Father (taken from the Gospel of Luke, 6:36) serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn, but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure (cfr. Lk 6:37-38). The logo the work of Jesuit Father Marko I. Rupnik presents a small Summa Theologiae of the theme of mercy. In fact, it represents an image quite important to the early Church: that of the Son having taken upon his shoulders the lost soul demonstrating that it is the love of Christ that brings to completion the mystery of His incarnation culminating in redemption. The logo has been designed in such a way so as to express the profound way in which the Good Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and does so with a love with the power to change one s life. One particular feature worthy of note is that while the Good Shepherd, in his great mercy, takes humanity upon himself, his eyes are merged with those of man. Christ sees with the eyes of Adam, and Adam with the eyes of Christ. Every person discovers in Christ, the new Adam, one s own humanity and the future that lies ahead, contemplating, in his gaze, the love of the Father. Blessings. Fr. 7 SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO 6 DE DICIEMBRE 2015 Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe VÍSTETE DE GOZO Hoy Baruc nos habla del esplendor que se acerca para la ciudad de Jerusalén y para todos nosotros, sea donde fuere nuestro hogar. Despójate de conflictos, nos dice, y vístete de gozo. Como una vieja cobija favorita, el gozo nos queda a la medida, y qué bien nos mantiene calientes, por muy frío que sople el viento. Pablo sabe de ese gozo cuando escribe su carta a los filipenses, orando para que crezcan en su habilidad de discernir lo que es bueno y justo. Y Lucas nos habla de Juan, el que fue anunciado por Isaías y que canta una canción parecida: Preparen el camino del Señor pues la salvación está al llegar. Hombre adelantado a su época, Baruc se pasó la vida alegremente esperando una gloria lejana. En este segundo Domingo de Adviento, Pablo y Juan saben que esta gloria se acerca. Copyright J. S.
