3 PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters During the past few weeks, there has been very distressing news concerning the abuse of minors, of efforts by bishops to conceal the truth and revelations concerning immoral behavior by a cardinal, that has rocked our Church and far beyond. All of us are profoundly saddened because of this situation. Day of Prayer and Reparation Our Bishop, John, is now inviting every Parish and Catholic Institution in the Diocese of Winona- Rochester to hold, on a date of their choosing, a day of repentance and prayer for all those who have suffered humiliations and abuses. At the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona, Bishop John has asked that Friday, September 14, 2018, be set aside as a day of special prayer and reparation. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be held all day in the main body of the Church and will end in the late afternoon. All of us are encouraged to voluntarily fast and perform acts of penance and charity on that, or another, day. September 14 is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and this day seems particularly fitting as a day to beg forgiveness for these sins and to pray for victims harmed and broken by those who were supposed to protect them. In these difficult times we are asked to stand in the shadow of the Cross and bear the brunt of the pain of our people who are deeply scandalized, hurt, and confused. In our Parish of Saints Peter and Paul As you know, in Xavier Chapel we have Adoration on Tuesdays and Fridays (and it is our desire that we extend the days of Adoration to the whole week). As of yet, I would like to invite you to choose an hour either on Tuesdays or Fridays of this month of September to come and implore for mercy and for consolation for all those who have suffered so much. This will be the main intention that I ask all adorers to have in your heart. And even if you are unable to come, please keep this intention in your daily prayers and sacrifices. I finish with the words of Saint Paul in todays second reading: Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world. Người đáp: "Hỡi bọn giả hình, Isaia thật đã nói tiên tri rất chí lý về các ngươi, như lời chép rằng: 'Dân này kính Ta ngoài môi miệng, nhưng lòng chúng ở xa Ta. Nó sùng kính Ta cách giả dối, bởi vì nó dạy những giáo lý và những luật lệ loài người'. Vì các ngươi bỏ qua các giới răn Thiên Chúa, để nắm giữ tập tục loài người". Và Người lại gọi dân chúng mà bảo rằng: "Hết thảy hãy nghe và hiểu rõ lời Ta. Không có gì từ bên ngoài vào trong con người mà có thể làm cho họ ra ô uế. Chỉ có những gì từ con người xuất ra, chính những cái đó mới làm cho họ ra ô uế. Vì từ bên trong, từ tâm trí người ta xuất phát những tư tưởng xấu: ngoại tình, dâm ô, giết người, trộm cắp, tham lam, độc ác, xảo trá, lăng loàn, ganh tị, vu khống, kiêu căng, ngông cuồng. Tất cả những sự xấu đó đều ở trong mà ra, và làm cho người ta ra ô uế". Đó là lời Chúa. En una ciudad de California, es ilegal tener dos bañeras dentro de una casa. Cuando se pasó la ley era un lujo tener acceso al agua corriente, pero ahora que no lo es la ley parece ridícula. Sin embargo, el valor humano de proteger y preservar los recursos más valiosos sigue teniendo vigencia, esto se manifiesta en muchas leyes, que nos parecen muy acertadas, cuyo fin es proteger el medio ambiente. Sucede lo mismo con los preceptos religiosos. Lo que Jesús desdeña hoy es la actitud de los demás respecto a los preceptos rituales, una actitud que se vuelve casi idólatra cuando se obedecen los preceptos por el mero hecho de obedecerlos. Lo que Jesús enseña es que el cumplimiento de los preceptos rituales externos sólo tiene valor cuando simboliza nuestra predisposición interior a cumplir la voluntad de Dios. Nuestras vidas deben obedecer el precepto supremo de Dios: amar a Dios por encima de todo y al prójimo igual que nos amamos a nosotros. La religión católica es rica en costumbres, tradiciones e incluso preceptos. Al seguir escuchando la voz de Cristo, siempre debemos examinar nuestro corazón y nuestras prácticas rituales para asegurarnos de que el amor a Dios y al prójimo se halle por encima de todo lo demás.
