3 ASSOCIATE PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 T his past Wednesday, October 22nd was the feast day of the recently canonized Pope St. John Paul II. St. John Paul left the Church a great example of acceptance of the cross and an immense body of writings and speeches. There is one phrase that St. John Paul repeated often and which has become particularly associated with St. John Paul: Do not be afraid. In his homily for the inauguration of his pontificate in St. Peter s Square on Sunday, October 22, 1978, Pope St. John Paul said: Do not be afraid. Open wide the doors for Christ. To his saving power open the boundaries of States, economic and political systems, the vast fields of culture, civilization and development. Do not be afraid. Christ knows what is in man. He alone knows it. Fr. Mariano Varela should be back at Ss. Peter and Paul this weekend. For the next two weeks, I will be back at our major seminary in Chillum, MD (it s just outside Washington D.C.) teaching an intensive course on philosophy of knowledge. St. John Paul, pray for us! The Celebrating Families Ministry celebrates the liturgical year by giving families an opportunity to enjoy feast days through potluck gatherings, social time and crafts for young children. It s a great opportunity to get to know other families and live the life of the church through its many seasons. Diocesan Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) The Annual Diocesan Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA), formerly known as the Annual Diocesan Appeal, is a primary source of funding to help sustain and expand ministries in the 114 parishes, 30 schools, seminary, programs and departments of the diocesan church. Our parish goal for this year is $42, As of October 21st update we are at $29, or 69% of our goal. We wish to thank everyone who has made a donation to the appeal and encourage others to prayerfully consider making a donation to the appeal. Donation envelopes are at the end of the pews or at the entrances to the church. You may also go online at From September 24 November 2, our community will take part in 40 Days for Life a groundbreaking, coordinated international mobilization. We pray that, with God s help, this will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in our city and beyond. Wired to the Heart Wired to the Heart, Loyola's fall fundraiser raises money for technology and science at Loyola. This year the event is November 14th. When you think of Halloween, what comes to mind?...candy, costumes, scary stuff? But if you know the Christian connection to the day- you may start seeing things in a whole new light! The true origins of Halloween come from the Ancient Celtic tribes who lived near Ireland and Scotland. Nov. 1st marked their New Year, and the night before they celebrated the festival of Samhain (Lord of the Dead). They believed evil spirits and the souls of the dead returned on this day to mingle with the living! In order to scare away the evil spirits people would wear masks and light bonfires! Later when the Romans conquered the Celts, they added their own touches on the festival. Then in 835 Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (All Saints Day) from May 13 to Nov. 1. Then the night before became known as All Hallow Eve or Holy Evening. Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On Nov 2, the church celebrates All Souls Day. The purpose of these feasts is to remember those who have died, whether they are recognized by the Church as saints with a capital S or not. It is a celebration of the communion of saints which reminds us that the Church is not bound by space or time. The CCC #1475 says that through the communion of saints a perennial link of charity exits between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Se convir eron en ejemplo para otros creyentes. La primera lectura nos dice que pongamos nuestra fe en acción. Este pasaje es parte de una larga lista de reglas que Dios impone a los israelitas para su observancia y para respetar su Ley. Dios nos juzgará por cómo nosotros tratamos a nuestros semejantes. Dios escuchará los llantos de todo aquel al que desatendemos o maltratamos, y vendrá en su defensa. En el Evangelio de hoy, los fariseos plantean la cues ón de la Ley de Dios. Cuál es el mandamiento más importante de la Ley? (Mateo 22:36). Cómo es posible que él pueda elegir de entre todos los detallados mandamientos que los judíos observaban? Sin duda que ofendería a alguien con su respuesta! Sin embargo, Jesús fue derecho al grano. El amor es el más grande de todos los mandamientos, el amor de Dios y el amor del prójimo.
