2 THIRTY SECOND SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME 2 Sacrament of Reconciliation Saturday: 11 am-noon & 4-5 pm Daily: After the 7:00 am Mass Other times by appointment. Sacrament of Baptism Contact the Parish Office at least one month in advance of the desired date. Baptism preparation sessions for parents and sponsors are held the 2nd Monday of the month at 6:00 pm. The usual time for Baptism is at 4:15 pm the 4th Saturday of the month. 3 PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 Dear brothers and sisters: Today s Gospel is a beautiful parable about the importance of watchfulness, of vigilance. It is the parable of the prudent and the foolish virgins. They all wanted to go out to meet the bridegroom (Christ) who is coming. Saint Augustine comments: What does "going out to meet the bridegroom" mean? It is to go out with their heart, it is to live in expectation of His coming. But He delayed His coming, and they all fell asleep. The Gospels says: At midnight someone shouted. Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet Him! Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. And Saint Thomas Aquinas comments: To trim lamps is nothing other than to count the works which they did so that they can render a fitting account. Hence, they will be concerned about their works when they will hear the voice of the Son of God, as it is said : When did we see thee hungry and fed thee: thirsty and gave thee drink, etc? This refers to the present life, when a shout is made by a preacher or by an internal inspiration then men rise from their negligence, and then they begin to rise to correct their deeds. Then the Gospel continues: The foolish said to the wise: Give us of your oil, for our lamps are going out. These virgins, said Saint Thomas, were foolish in one respect but not in another respect: because they had something of the light of faith; hence, they say: For our lamps are going out. For if they had no faith they might say, They have gone out hence, they know that they cannot keep fire burning without oil. And what is the meaning of these words? Either the works of mercy or of justice may be understood by oil, and the meaning is the same, because those rising who do not have these works in abundance seek to supply their deficiencies with those who have more abundantly. Vigilance then is the virtue that keeps the oil of good works of mercy burning in our lamps, that is our hearts. The light of faith, in fact, cannot have value without the works of mercy. It happens that sometimes we spend our lives in vain things. It is important that when we recognize ourselves in vain things, we run to others and ask for their prayers and help and at the same time, that we fill our lamps with the oil of good works, so that the bridegroom of our souls may find us ready. Những cô khờ dại nói với các cô khôn ngoan rằng: 'Các chị cho chúng em chút dầu, vì đèn của chúng em đã tắt cả'. Các cô khôn ngoan đáp lại rằng: 'E không đủ cho chúng em và các chị, các chị ra (nhà) hàng mà mua thì hơn'. Song khi họ đang đi mua, thì chàng rể đến. Những trinh nữ đã sẵn sàng thì theo chàng rể cùng vào tiệc cưới, và cửa đóng lại. Sau cùng các trinh nữ kia cũng đến và nói: 'Thưa Ngài, xin mở cửa cho chúng tôi'. Nhưng Người đáp lại: 'Ta bảo thật các ngươi, ta không biết các ngươi'. "Vậy hãy tỉnh thức, vì các ngươi không biết ngày nào, giờ nào". Đó là lời Chúa. Advent An Ignatian style Advent Retreat is being offered at SS Peter & Paul Parish this Advent season. Please join us as we prepare ourselves for the Son of God becoming man and for His second coming in glory. LA SABIDURÍA Nuestra tema de hoy es la sabiduría. La primera lectura del Libro de la Sabiduría presenta este valioso regalo como un espíritu femenino, una virtud muy deseable buscada por muchos y posible, por la gracia de Dios, para todos los que la buscan. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús relata una parábola para ilustrar de una manera práctica y concreta qué es la sabiduría. Los sabios conservan sus recursos, los usan prudentemente, con atención al paso del tiempo. Los tontos, por otro lado, por no planear su futuro, quedarán en la oscuridad. Las dos lecturas indican lo accesible que es la sabiduría a todos los que la buscan de manera sencilla y sincera. Las palabras de Pablo no tocan directamente el tema de la sabiduría, pero describen un resultado de la verdadera sabiduría: A la persona sabia de fe ni la muerte le asusta, porque nuestra fe en la resurrección de Jesús nos dice que todos vamos a despertar a una vida nueva en Cristo.
