Pope Francis states, "Every time we take part in the Holy Mass and nourish ourselves with the Body of Christ, the presence of Jesus and of the Holy Spirit acts in us, it molds our heart, communicates to us interior attitudes that are translated in behavior according to the Gospel." Thus, the Blessed Sacrament is the means by which we can directly, and tangibly, connect with God. The physical act of receiving the Body and Blood of Christ during Holy Communion allows us to physically and spiritually commune with God. We are transported through time and we are seated with Him at His table. Many of our personal relationships share one thing in common: food. We sit together with our families and eat. We sit with friends and break bread together. We create moments around the dinner table when there is reason to celebrate. Our Vietnamese culture remembers our dead loved ones with feasts and community gatherings. Such is the power of dining together at a table. It is in the same setting that Jesus instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Even more profound is that through the Eucharist, God calls out to us and seeks to enter into our bodies and hearts, so that we can become one with Him. He makes Himself available to us as often as we are willing to accept and receive Him. I recently read 3 Moments of the Day by Father Christopher Collins as part of a post camp completion assignment. In his book, Father Collins outlines three moments throughout the day during

The three moments, which consist of the morning offering, Examen, and living the Eucharist, define what we recognize as Sống Ngày Tha nh Thể (Living the Eucharistic Day). Father Collins also wrote about the true nature of prayer. I think many, including myself, are guilty of assuming that prayer must be clean and holy disciplined and controlled (p. 22). This notion often deters us from seeking out God because we feel unworthy of such holiness. However, God understands that humanity is characterized by imperfections. Thus, our prayers should naturally include all of these imperfections. Father Collins explains that neat and clean-cut prayers separate our conversations with God from the mess that is our reality (p. 27). Jesus, through His life and His sacrifice, illustrated His intention to be one with us in our reality every aspect of it, both clean-cut and gritty. Our imperfect lives should be offered to God in their entirety. These imperfections are called to mind along with all the perfect and happy moments during Examen. This allows for us to live our lives fully, experiencing and taking responsibility for every moment and every choice. Father Collins highlights the importance of not hiding from the shadows or the things we are ashamed of. He does this by using St. Ignatius s example of The Licentious Man. I think many Catholics fall prey to the image of The Licentious Man. We may tell ourselves, we are not good enough to go to Mass because we are sinful. Or, we may say, I am too ashamed of my wrong doings to go to confession. Even worse yet, I will only sin again, what is the point? All these words that we repeat to ourselves feed into the wants of the Licentious Man. Attending Mass and Living the Eucharistic Day provides us with the spiritual ammunition needed to fight the battle. And what a battle it is! Life can be filled with difficulty, it is important to find a source of strength. What we hold at the center of our lives dictates how we live it. By recognizing the Eucharist as the pinnacle of our day, we place love in its purest form at the center of our lives. I have heard that being Catholic is like being a piece of coal. We can only provide heat and burn red when we are in the presence of other pieces of coal. When we are cast outside of the coal pile, we quickly grow cold and black. The easiest way to keep the coal burning red is to attend the celebration of the Eucharist. What better way to gain strength than to be in the physical presence of God? I think this is an image that will remain with me for the rest of my life. Each person has the potential to burn bright so long as we don t forget to cast ourselves away from the coal for too long.
