3 PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters, As you may know I have been preaching spiritual exercises in the Philippines. In the Philippines our religious family of the Incarnate Word, both, the priests and the sisters, have different missions. Parishes, seminaries, convents, and houses of mercy. It is very edifying to see the apostolate of our missionaries, especially in the parish they attend in the suburbs of Manila. It is located in a very poor area. Most of the families live in extreme conditions. And our priests have built the church and their house in the middle of that neighborhood. Although the families are very poor, they are a very good example of Christian joy and fidelity in difficult situations. Speaking about poverty, in today s Gospel Jesus makes a list of things that His disciples are not supposed to carry with them on their journey: no food, no sack, no money in their belts no second tunic (Mk 6:8-9). Jesus wants His disciples to have complete trust in the Father s Providence and therefore He wants them to leave behind all those things that are not absolutely necessary for their lives. Jesus sends them out to preach, relying only on God s infallible Word and Grace. If people see that the disciples are worried about what they are to eat, drink and dress, their deeds will be in contradiction with their preaching. On the contrary, their preaching will be effective if the disciples live differently from the way people live. St. Ignatius of Loyola wrote to his religious about poverty: Love of poverty makes us kings, even when we are still on earth; kings not of the earth but of heaven. We can therefore understand that if the Kingdom of Heaven is promised to others in the future, in the present it is promised to those who are poor and to those who suffer tribulations for the sake of the Immutable Truth the Absolute Truth that says Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. These are the ones who indeed have the right to the Kingdom. Jesus encouraged His disciples to live in poverty. Now, His words were also addressed to every human being in every state of life. What are we worried about? Are we too worried about material well-being and material security? The Gospel says, Do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and body more than clothing? (Mt 6:25). Let us ask our Lord to help us welcome and live according to His Divine ideal of poverty and be counted among those who are poor in spirit so as to have the right of possession of the Kingdom of Heaven. LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Mañana celebramos la fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, reconocida en Chile como Maipú. Chile es un país con mucha industria marinera y la Virgen del Carmen es la patrona de los marineros por el peligro al cual se exponen en el mar. Los frailes Carmelitas han difundido la devoción a la Virgen del monte Carmelo desde el siglo XIII. En aquella época María regaló el escapulario al general de los Carmelitas, Simón Stock, prometiendo que todos los que lo usasen serían recibidos por ella en el cielo, evitando así el infierno. Con el tiempo el escapulario Carmelitano se modificó para uso de todo cristiano. Por esto ella es patrona de todo oficio que tiene peligro de muerte como el de los soldados, camioneros, pilotos, troqueros, etc. Por entender el escapulario como algo mágico, Nuestra Señora del Carmen ha sido tomada como patrona de los pandilleros porque viven en peligro de ser matados en sus riñas callejeras. Piensan que llevar puesto el escapulario es lo necesario para evitar el infierno e ignoran que usar el escapulario es vivir como María, en paz y al servicio de los demás. El primero es el llamado del Señor al profeta Amós, el pastor y cultivador de higos (Amós 7:14). El segundo es el llamado del Señor Jesús a los Doce, a quienes envió de dos en dos (Marcos 6:7). Estas personas fieles respondieron al llamado, profetizaron y predicaron a aquellos a quienes habían sido enviados. En el Bautismo, cada uno de nosotros recibió un llamado. La segunda lectura nos invita a reflexionar sobre ese llamado ya que se nos recuerda que hemos sido elegidos en Cristo y que, por amor, Dios nos eligió... para que fuéramos sus hijos (Efesios 1:5). Por ser hijos adoptivos de Dios se nos llama a llevar la presencia de Cristo a nuestro matrimonio, familiares, escuelas y sitios de trabajo.
