3 ASSOCIATE PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 O n September 14, the Church celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This feast originated in the finding of the True Cross in the early fourth century. The readings at Mass point out the salvific nature of the Cross of Christ. The first reading from the Book of Numbers (Nm 21:4b-9) recounts that after the Israelites complained against God and Moses in the desert, In punishment the LORD sent among the people saraph serpents, which bit the people so that many of them died (Nm 21:6). After the people repented, Moses prayed to God on behalf of the people. God told Moses: Make a saraph and mount it on a pole, and if any who have been bitten look at it, they will live (v. 8). Moses did so: Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he lived (v. 9). Those who gazed at an image of a serpent lifted up on a pole were healed. In the gospel (Jn 3:13-17) for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, our Blessed Lord Himself makes use of this episode and applies it to His Passion: just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life (Jn 3:14-15). The Israelites who looked on the serpent that was lifted up in the desert were healed of the serpent s poison, which brought about physical death. By faith in Christ Jesus, we are healed from the poison of sin, which brings with it spiritual death. When we look upon a crucifix, we should call to mind what it represents. Christ said that He must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life (vv ). Christ Jesus is God the Son, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, Who became man, suffered, died on the cross, and rose gloriously on the third day. A crucifix serves to remind us of the truths of salvation and foster love and devotion to our Savior. There is a devotion to the Holy Cross of Jesus Christ attributed to St. Anthony called St. Anthony s Brief. According to the legend, a woman was greatly vexed by a temptation experienced a vision of St. Anthony in which the saint gave her a sheet on which there was a cross and the following prayer: Ecce Crucem Domini, Fugite, partes adversae, Vicit Leo de Tribu Juda, Radix David, alleluia. Behold the Cross of the Lord! Flee ye adversaries! The Lion of the Tribe of Juda, The Root of David has conquered, alleluia! This prayer wonderfully brings together the power of the cross, when used with faith. May we look on the Cross of Christ with faith and inherit eternal life. Fr. Richard Yevchak, IVE

"Khi ra về, tên đầy tớ gặp một người bạn mắc nợ y một trăm bạc: Y tóm lấy, bóp cổ mà nói rằng: 'Hãy trả nợ cho ta'. Bấy giờ người bạn sấp mình dưới chân và van lơn rằng: 'Xin vui lòng cho tôi khất một kỳ hạn, tôi sẽ trả hết nợ cho anh'. Y không nghe, bắt người bạn tống giam vào ngục, cho đến khi trả nợ xong. "Các bạn y chứng kiến cảnh tượng đó, rất khổ tâm, họ liền đi thuật với chủ tất cả câu truyện. Bấy giờ chủ đòi y đến vào bảo rằng: 'Tên đầy tớ độc ác kia, ta đã tha hết nợ cho ngươi, vì ngươi đã van xin ta; còn ngươi, sao ngươi không chịu thương bạn ngươi như ta đã thương ngươi?' Chủ nổi giận, trao y cho lý hình hành hạ, cho đến khi trả hết nợ. "Vậy Cha Ta trên trời cũng xử với các con đúng như thế, nếu mỗi người trong các con không hết lòng tha thứ cho anh em mình". Jesus & the Little Ones Sunday School Catechists are needed to share the Sunday Gospel readings with 3-7 year old children on their level. The program is held during the Liturgy of the Word during the 9:30 am Sunday Mass. Catechists lead the children out of Mass after a blessing from the priest and return at offertory. Contact the Faith Formation office for more information. RCIA is a program designed to help non- Catholics and non-practicing Catholics learn more about Catholicism through a series of classes, discussions, prayer times, and ceremonies. This program helps people grow in faith and knowledge of God as they consider becoming Catholic; although there is no obligation to join the Catholic Church. Contact the parish office at to register. 6 SEPTEMBER 17, Loyola Catholic School Each month we celebrate our elementary student s birthdays at a Birthday Mass. Students are honored and blessed at Mass and complete a project for our Birthday Wall. This year s theme is I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life...follow Me. Our September Birthday Mass is on September 20 at 9:20 am All are welcome. Volunteers are always welcome at Loyola. To inquire about opportunities and requirements, please call Loyola Homecoming is September 29. Help Us Grow The Help Us Grow Committee has an exciting announcement and a great opportunity for all parishioners. On October 13 we will hold our first Help Us Grow Saturday beginning at 9:00 am. On that day everyone who is willing and able is invited for a day of painting, cleaning, dusting and other project work here in the Church and others buildings. If you have an hour or the whole day please consider joining us to build and strengthen our parish community and improve our facilities.
