3 PASTOR S ASSOCIATE MESSAGE PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 3 O n December 8 th, the Church celebrated the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This doctrine of faith was solemnly defined by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854 in the Apostolic Constitution Ineffabilis Deus. In Ineffabilis Deus, Pius IX explains the reason for the Immaculate Conception is found in God s plan to salvation through the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity: God Ineffable... having foreseen from all eternity the lamentable wretchedness of the entire human race which would result from the sin of Adam, decreed, by a plan hidden from the centuries, to complete the first work of his goodness by a mystery yet more wondrously sublime through the Incarnation of the Word. To carry out His plan of salvation, From the very beginning, and before time began, the eternal Father chose and prepared for his only-begotten Son a Mother in whom the Son of God would become incarnate and from whom, in the blessed fullness of time, he would be born into this world. With this basic reason in mind, Pius IX proceeds to explain that the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is not a new doctrine. The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception can be found in the Church s liturgy, in the Fathers of the Church, and Tradition. Still, Pius IX did not act to solemnly define the Immaculate Conception given its universality and antiquity without first consulting the Catholic bishops of the world. The Pope explains in Ineffabilis Deus: Although we knew the mind of the bishops from the petitions which we had received from them, namely, that the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin be finally defined, nevertheless, on February 2, 1849, we sent an Encyclical Letter from Gaeta to all our venerable brethren, the bishops of the Catholic world, that they should offer prayers to God and then tell us in writing what the piety an devotion of their faithful was in regard to the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God. We likewise inquired what the bishops themselves thought about defining this doctrine and what their wishes were in regard to making known with all possible solemnity our supreme judgment. We were certainly filled with the greatest consolation when the replies of our venerable brethren came to us. For, replying to us with a most enthusiastic joy, exultation and zeal, they not only again confirmed their own singular piety toward the Immaculate Conception of the most Blessed Virgin, and that of the secular and religious clergy and of the faithful, but with one voice they even entreated us to define our supreme judgment and authority the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin. Finally, Pope Pius IX defined the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception as follows: We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful (Ineffabilis Deus). 5 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 5 Confirmation & Youth Ministry Beverly Miller ssppyouth4u@gmail.com Faith Formation Beth Shank: hickorytech.net Wednesday, December 13 th 5:15pm - Baked Potato Meal in Jesuit Hall Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Infancy Narratives in the Atrium Each Advent through early February, catechists and children remember and ponder the Scriptures of the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity of our Lord, Adoration of the Magi, and Presentation in the Temple utilizing the beautiful materials as tools for our work with the Trinity as our teacher and guide. We ponder many messages through the Scriptures including: God has a plan to bring all people and all of creation into the fullness of life in His Kingdom. This plan is unfolded in time and space and involves waiting and preparation. God chooses the smallest vessels in which to do His Greatest Work. Jesus is the light of the world for all. Each year the Level II catechist and children ponder a Synthesis of the Infancy Narratives through a common Golden Thread i.e., Light. Who first knew about this light, has it changed, who else learns about this light, and who is this light intended for? Take some time this week to read through these Scriptures again and ponder the light within each! En un tiempo de tanto nerviosismo y prisa, cuando nuestras cargas habituales se duplican a causa de los miles de preparativos navideños, podemos elegir aminorar la marcha, dedicar un tiempo a curar las heridas y valorar el enorme regalo que estamos por recibir. Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, se ha convertido en uno de nosotros y conoce nuestras limitaciones humanas. Sin embargo, Dios, incluso ahora, nos está librando de las cargas que se nos amontonan por no prestarle atención a él ni a nuestros anhelos más profundos.
