3 ASSOCIATE PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 A t every Mass, we have the great blessing of being able to receive the Most Holy Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. There are particular ways laid down by the Church of celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass or the Divine Liturgy as it is called in the Byzantine Tradition. In the Western Church, the predominant rite or external expression of worship and prayer is the Roman Rite. At Mass on Sundays and weekdays, you will see two books of the Roman Rite: the lectionary and the Roman Missal. The lectionary contains the cycle of readings that are read at Mass. The Roman Missal contains the prayers and other words said by the priest and the people s responses. The Roman Missal also contains rubrics that direct how things should be done. They are called rubrics because they are printed in the Roman Missal in red and the Latin word for red is ruber. There is a section of the Roman Missal, which is also published separately, called the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM). This section explains in more depth the rites or actions that are to be followed at every Mass. It also gives explanation as to why we do things a certain way in the Mass. I will close with the first two paragraphs from the GIRM: 1. As Christ the Lord was about to celebrate with the disciples the paschal supper in which he instituted the Sacrifice of his Body and Blood, he commanded that a large, furnished upper room be prepared (Lk 22:12). Indeed, the Church has always judged that this command also applied to herself whenever she decided about things related to the disposition of people's minds, and of places, rites, and texts for the Celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist. The present norms, too, prescribed in keeping with the will of the Second Vatican Council, together with the new Missal with which the Church of the Roman Rite will henceforth celebrate the Mass, are again a demonstration of this same solicitude of the Church, of her faith and her unaltered love for the supreme mystery of the Eucharist, and also attest to her continuous and consistent tradition, even though certain new elements have been introduced. 2. The sacrificial nature of the Mass, solemnly defended by the Council of Trent, because it accords with the universal tradition of the Church, was once more stated by the Second Vatican Council, which pronounced these clear words about the Mass: At the Last Supper, Our Savior instituted the Eucharistic Sacrifice of his Body and Blood, by which the Sacrifice of his Cross is perpetuated until he comes again; and till then he entrusts the memorial of his Death and Resurrection to his beloved spouse, the Church. SSPP is excited to announce the opening of a Level II Atrium for children ages 6-9! The Catechetical team has been working diligently on materials and through the 90 hour certification program to be prepared to assist the children to fall more deeply in love with God and explore the History of our faith. This hands-on approach to learning greatly impacts the children as they enter into the Atrium, a beautiful space prepared for them to explore the proclamations of the Catholic Church. Originalmente los profetas habían surgido como los portavoces de Dios cuando Israel ya no se veía guiado por las figuras religioso-civiles a quienes conocemos como los Jueces, sino por los Reyes. Al correr del tiempo la monarquía de Israel se había apropiado los oficios de sacerdote y de profeta, estableciéndolos como órdenes, y reservándose el derecho de nombrar profetas oficiales para la corte real. Entonces, como ahora, cuando los que estaban en el poder escogían a los que iban a servirles de conciencia oficial, a veces las cosas se torcían. Y entonces Dios escogía profetas de donde menos se les esperaba. Así fue como Amós recibió su llamado a profetizar. En el Evangelio del domingo pasado vimos cómo Jesús surgió como el Ungido del Señor aunque venía de un lugar que muchos consideraban poco probable. Y nosotros, cuando continuamos discerniendo nuestro propio llamado bautismal a ser discípulos, podemos estar seguros de que estamos, en las palabras de san Pablo: destinados [para eso], por decisión del que lo hace todo según su voluntad (Efesios 1:11).
