3 ASSOCIATE PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 A few weeks ago I wrote about some resources that can help us in deepening our faith. When we learn more about our Catholic faith, we learn more about God Himself and what He has revealed to us. The websites I previously mentioned provide access to the Sacred Scriptures and official Church documents from the Vatican. These can be very useful to deepen one s faith but you need some idea of where to look. And so, if someone wants to learn more about a particular teaching of the Church simply to deepen his or her faith or for apologetic purposes, there are a couple other websites that may be useful. One website is Catholic Answers ( There is a lot of material on this website which is oriented toward helping Catholics understand the Catholic faith and also to explain and defend the faith from the many misinterpretations that people have of our Catholic faith. If you want to learn why Catholics pray to saints, for instance, Catholic Answers presents Scripture passages, Church documents, and an explanation that fits things together. If you want to learn more about of our Catholic faith but do not know where to begin your search, Catholic Answers is good place to look. The other website is EWTN ( This site also has a lot of material similar in nature to Catholic Answers. Here you can find explanations of Catholic beliefs which gather Scripture passages and Church documents in an understandable way. EWTN is also a Catholic cable channel that you can watch online for free. Father Richard Yevchak, IVE October is Respect Life Month Life is a gift from God but sometimes the gift comes at a difficult time and abortion may seem like the only solution. Catholic Charities reaches out to women in a crisis pregnancy situation with a 24/7 pregnancy information line to help and support pregnant women to choose life for their baby. Catholic Charities Mother and Child Assistance Fund helps pregnant women to carry their baby to term by providing direct support they need to work through difficult situations that they and their baby may face. For more information about the Mother Child Assistance Fund call Catholic Charities at or the hotline at Diocesan Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) The Annual Diocesan Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA), formerly known as the Annual Diocesan Appeal, is a primary source of funding to help sustain and expand ministries in the 114 parishes, 30 schools, seminary, programs and departments of the diocesan church. Our parish goal for this year is $42, As of October 1st update we are at $27, or 64% of our goal. We wish to thank everyone who has made a donation to the appeal and encourage others to prayerfully consider making a donation to the appeal. Donation envelopes are at the end of the pews or at the entrances to the church. You may also go online at From September 24 November 2, our community will take part in 40 Days for Life a groundbreaking, coordinated international mobilization. We pray that, with God s help, this will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in our city and beyond. 4 OCTOBER 19, SSPP Children s/youth Choir Students currently in 2nd through 12th grade who love to sing are invited to come to the Choir Room, Wednesdays from 4:30 5:15 pm for practice. Wired to the Heart Wired to the Heart, Loyola's fall fundraiser raises money for technology and science at Loyola. This year the event is November 14th. You don't have to be there to help the school, however. Buy a raffle ticket and be a part of this great event. When you think of Halloween, what comes to mind?...candy, costumes, scary stuff? But if you know the Christian connection to the day- you may start seeing things in a whole new light! The true origins of Halloween come from the Ancient Celtic tribes who lived near Ireland and Scotland. Nov. 1st marked their New Year, and the night before they celebrated the festival of Samhain (Lord of the Dead). They believed evil spirits and the souls of the dead returned on this day to mingle with the living! In order to scare away the evil spirits people would wear masks and light bonfires! Later when the Romans conquered the Celts, they added their own touches on the festival. Then in 835 Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (All Saints Day) from May 13 to Nov. 1. Then the night before became known as All Hallow Eve or Holy Evening. Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On Nov 2, the church celebrates All Souls Day. The purpose of these feasts is to remember those who have died, whether they are recognized by the Church as saints with a capital S or not. It is a celebration of the communion of saints which reminds us that the Church is not bound by space or time. The CCC #1475 says that through the communion of saints a perennial link of charity exits between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Baby Bottle Campaign The Baby Bottle Campaign will continue during the month of October. It provides assistance to pregnant women to choose life over abortion. Ciro merece este tulo ya que acabó con la cau vidad de los judíos en Babilonia. No obstante, Jesús nos recuerda que fue Dios quien dio a Ciro su poder. Quizás sea un gran rey pero, Yo soy el Señor, y no hay otro igual, Dios dice (Isaías 45:5). El Evangelio de hoy también está relacionado con el poder mundano. En el pasaje de Mateo vemos como los fariseos intentan con ar mañas que Jesús hable mal del emperador. Su conocida respuesta es la perfecta réplica. Al igual que los reyes de la an güedad, el César debe ser respetado dada su posición pero todo pertenece a Dios. En la segunda lectura, Pablo da las gracias por todos los que son fieles a Jesucristo y su Evangelio. También él nos recuerda que nuestra llamada y el poder de ser fieles provienen de Dios.
