3 PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 Jesus gives us a firm statement about himself: I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world The Eucharist transforms those who receive Communion. To participate actively in the Mass, we need to resist a tendency to passivity when gather in an audience-like setting. At Mass, we are an assembly of believers called to be a community joined in the praise and worship of God. We do this in singing of hymns, psalms, recitation of prayers and responses, especially in our Yes to God in the great Amen. Active participation also requires an interior attention and a profound inner offering, as St. Paul urges in Romans 12: 1: I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. When the assembly of the faithful, from the hands of the priest, offers the sacrifice of Christ to the Father, the members of the assembly are called to offer their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, in using the word body, St. Paul does not mean simply our flesh and bones, but rather our very selves. This, then, is a spiritual sacrifice. How can we do this? In the Eucharistic Prayer, we hear that Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it, made it his Body, and gave it for our salvation. One way of identifying with this is to pray, Lord, take me, bless me. Break me. Make me a part of you saving, sacrificial gift for the world s bodily and spiritual needs. Having offered ourselves to the Father in union with Christ, we practice active participation in the Mass in its highest form. When we receive Communion, we need to remember that we are not changing Christ into ourselves, Jesus is transforming us into himself. This requires a proper understanding of the Real Presence of Jesus under the appearance of bread and wine. It is not simply a symbol that merely points to Jesus. Nor is Christ s presence just a projection on our part in the sense that we make him present when we receive him. As Pope Benedict XVI told the young people gather for the Twentieth World youth Day: The Body and Blood of Christ are given to us so that we ourselves will be transformed in our turn. We are to become the Body of Christ, his own Flesh and Blood. We all eat the one bread, and this means that we ourselves become one He is within us, and we are in him. Seminarians: The seminarians are back again for the new school year. Our annual camping trip will take place in Colorado from this Sunday until August 23rd. Please pray for us. Food For The Poor: Next weekend of August 15, Rev. Geoffrey Wirth will speak at all the Masses about a ministry providing direct relief to the poor through Latin American and the Caribbean. Fr. Wirth will share personal witness about Food For The Poor s mission to care for the destitute as a means of living out the Gospel mandate to love one another. Fr. Wirth was ordained in 1967 for the Diocese of Rockford. Before joining Food For The Poor to preach on behalf of those we serve, he served in the missions in Guatemala teaching in the Seminary and as a Pastor in his Diocese. Please join me in welcoming Fr. 4 AUGUST 9, Pastoral Council New Members If you would like to take part of the pastoral Council of our parish, please call to the office. Our meetings are the 4th Thursday of each month. You have to be a register member of the SSPP. "A parish is a definite community of the Christian faithful established on a stable basis within a particular church; the pastoral care of the parish is entrusted to a pastor as its own shepherd under the authority of the diocesan bishop"(canon 515). Clergy, religious and laity together form a parish, a portion of God's People whose pastoral care is entrusted to a pastor so that all can continue the mission of Jesus here on earth. The People of God have different gifts, roles and responsibilities, yet all are under one head, Christ Jesus sisters and brothers in Him. Fr. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori approach to the religious formation of children. SSPP is excited to announce the opening of a Level II Atrium for children ages 6-9! The Catechetical team has been working diligently on materials and through the 90 hour certification program to be prepared to assist the children to fall more deeply in love with God and explore the History of our faith. This hands-on approach to learning greatly impacts the children as they enter into the Atrium, a beautiful space prepared for them to explore the proclamations of the Catholic Church. Atrium Sessions will be held Mondays beginning in October Level I (ages 3-6[Kindergarten]): 3:30 5:00pm Level II (ages 6-9): 3:30-5:30pm If we want to help the child draw nearer to God, we should with patience and courage seek to go always closer to the vital nucleus of things. Thanks. Cambodian Family Returns After 34 years, Pho, Sophy, Net and Sena, 4 of 7 of the refugee family that Ss. Peter & Paul catholic church sponsored in 1981, came back for a visit on July 18. Their first home was the basement of our convent. They brought 7 new members of their family, several from California, ranging in age from they are so thankful to be free and healthy Americans. Los rusos tienen uno sorprendentemente audaz que le pega al Evangelio de este domingo: El pan es el comienzo de todo. De acuerdo a la primera lectura, puede ser que Elías sintiera que era demasiado tarde para ser pan demasiado tarde para la vida misma. Este gran profeta estaba ya al final de sus fuerzas y de su aguante. Entonces no uno, sino dos ángeles lo visitan. Uno le ofrece comida y bebida. El otro le da unas sorprendentes instrucciones. Para Elías esta comida de los ángeles es pan para su camino. Fortalecido por este regalo celestial de comida, él sigue su camino a la montaña de Dios. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús se ofrece a sí mismo, no sólo como pan para el camino, sino como pan para la vida misma. Él da su carne para dar vida al mundo. Yo soy el pan de vida (Juan 6:48).
