3 ASSOCIATE PASTOR S MESSAGE O n this Fifth Sunday of Lent, Holy Week draws ever nearer. Over the past five Sundays we have been presented with pointed Gospel readings. On the First Sunday of Lent, we heard that after Jesus fasted for forty days He was tempted in the desert by the devil (Mt. 4:1-11). On the Second Sunday of Lent, the Transfiguration of Jesus was read (Mt. 17:1-9). In the gospel for the Third Sunday of Lent, Jesus spoke with a Samaritan woman at a well (Jn. 4:5-42). Last Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Lent, presented us with the cure of the man born blind (Jn. 9:1-41). The gospel for this Sunday, the Fifth Sunday of Lent, is about the raising of Lazarus (Jn. 11:1-45). Next Sunday is Palm Sunday. We will read of our Blessed Lord s entry into Jerusalem and Passion. The gospel readings for these first Five Sundays of Lent paint a compelling picture of the work of salvation. We began this forty day period of penance with Christ Jesus Himself spending forty days in the wilderness fasting. After fasting, our Lord was tempted by the devil. Christ gave us an example of overcoming temptation by relying on God s word and rejecting Satan s suggestions. We can have great confidence in Jesus because He has experienced temptation as we have. St. Paul points that we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin (Heb. 4:15). For this reason, let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help (Heb. 4:16). The gospel reading about Jesus encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well gives us an example of responding to grace. Our Lord initiated the encounter by asking for a drink of water. The woman had to choose how to respond to Jesus. She chose to enter into dialogue with Him. Christ rewarded the woman s positive response and offered her living water: whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life (Jn. 4:14). Because the Samaritan woman remained open to the divine truth that Christ Jesus offered, our Blessed Lord revealed Himself as the Messiah. In the cure of the man born blind, our Lord s divine power is manifested in an undeniable way. The man whom our Lord cured testified to this: It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born blind (Jn. 9:32). Such a sign was not performed in the Old Testament by any one of the prophets. Yet, many Pharisees and others obstinately refused to believe in Christ Jesus because He did not conform to their idea of the Messiah promised by God. We must be open to the divine teaching and doctrine that Jesus Christ entrusted to His Church through the apostles and their successors, the bishops. In the gospels of the Transfiguration and the raising of Lazarus, Christ gives us a glimpse of the resurrection and the glory of heaven that awaits those who are faithful to God and who persevere to the end. The glory of heaven is beyond our comprehension and the idea of rising from the dead is hard for us to grasp. These signs served to strengthen the faith of His disciples. They should also be a comfort to us. In this season of Lent, we focus on Christ s suffering and death but our Lord s Passion is not the end. The Passion led to the Resurrection. God Bless, Fr. Richard A. Yevchak, IVE 3 Divine Mercy Sunday Sunday, April 23rd will be having the Devotion to the Divine Mercy from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm, during the Holy Hour there will be time for confessions. Sometime during this period of devotion, people cannot go to confession and therefore they think they will not receive the graces promised by Jesus. You may go to confession if you have a mortal sin, otherwise, as long as your conscience tells you that you are in the graces of God, you are spiritually alive to receive all the graces on that Sunday. Easter Flowers If you would like to help with the cost of the Easter Flowers you can do so by putting money in an envelope marked Easter Flowers and drop it into the Sunday collection basket. Spring House Cleaning While you are doing your Spring Housecleaning, instead of taking your items to the thrift store, please save them for a garage Sale, sponsored by the minor seminarians. (No clothing Please). The Garage Sale will be held on May and May You may drop off your items at the minor seminary starting on May 2nd until the time of sale from 10 am to 4 pm.

Người xúc động và hỏi: "Đã an táng Ladarô ở đâu?" Họ thưa: "Thưa Thầy, xin đến mà xem". Chúa Giêsu rơi lệ. Người Do-thái liền nói: "Kìa, xem Ngài thương ông ấy biết bao!" Nhưng có mấy kẻ trong đám nói: "Ông ấy đã mở mắt người mù từ khi mới sinh mà không làm được cho người này khỏi chết ư?" Chúa Giêsu lại xúc động; Người đi đến mộ. Chúa Giêsu lại nói: "Ta đã chẳng bảo con rằng: Nếu con tin, thì con sẽ xem thấy vinh quang của Thiên Chúa sao?" Thế là người ta cất tảng đá ra. Chúa Giêsu ngước nhìn lên và nói: "Lạy Cha, Con cảm tạ Cha đã nhậm lời Con. Con biết Cha hằng nghe lời Con. Nhưng Con nói lên vì những người đứng xung quanh đây, để họ tin rằng Cha đã sai Con". Nói rồi, Người kêu lớn tiếng: "Ladarô! Hãy ra đây!" Người đã chết đi ra, chân tay còn quấn những mảnh vải, trên mặt quấn khăn liệm. Chúa Giêsu bảo: "Hãy cởi ra cho anh ấy đi". Một số người Do-thái đến thăm Maria, khi được chứng kiến những việc Chúa Giêsu làm, thì đã tin vào Người. Đó là lời Chúa. Domingo de Ramos 9 de Abril RESUMEN DEL MINISTERIO DE JESÚS El relato de cómo Lázaro revivió de entre los muertos es el relato más largo (además de la Pasión) en el Evangelio según san Juan. En él encontramos un resumen de la mayor parte del ministerio de Jesús. Vemos su naturaleza humana cuando se conmueve con la tristeza de Marta y de María y cuando él mismo llora frente a la tumba de Lázaro. Es la sabiduría de la Palabra de Dios hecha carne cuando le explica a sus seguidores que la muerte de Lázaro servirá como una señal de la gloria de Dios. Corona los milagros que obra en el Evangelio según san Juan (que comenzó con el milagro más humano de hacer más vino en la boda de Caná) reviviendo a Lázaro de entre los muertos; un avance, por así decirlo, de su propia muerte y resurrección por venir. Este retrato de Jesús nos recuerda, mientras estamos cerca del fin de nuestro viaje de Cuaresma, que él está con nosotros, nos conoce, nos comprende en cada momento de nuestra vida. Conoce la alegría de nuestras celebraciones humanas, conoce la tristeza de nuestro llanto.
