3 PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 3 Dear brothers and sisters Today we read in the Gospel a very particular description of a miracle of our Lord. People brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hands on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man's ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, "Ephphatha!"(that is, "Be opened!") Two things we can gather from this miracle of the Gospel: 1) The first: the great importance of contact with Jesus Christ. Just as the deaf man with a speech impediment was touched by the Lord (he placed his fingers in his ears and with His saliva touched his tongue), so we too must touch the body of Jesus; to put us in close contact with Him. The Body of Jesus is "the body of God", that is, the body that the Son of God took for Himself. And God wanted that blessed body to be touched by us, to be seen by us, to be near us. And that body is in our midst, in the Tabernacle, in the Eucharist. But we can also touch it spiritually: with prayer, with sacrifice, with listening to the Divine Word. 2) The second: we need to open ourselves to the Truth of God. The word that Jesus said to this man is also directed to us: "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Be opened!") (in Baptism). And with it we have been told that the fact that God speaks to us does not benefit us if we do not listen to His word, if we do not welcome it. We must accept the word of God and live it, put it into practice, adjust our life to the teaching of Jesus. In a few words: live the Gospel and not only know it. 4 September 09, Matching Fund Challenge A very generous parishioner has offered us a matching maintenance fund challenge for up to $15, dollars. You can donate to the fund by mailing your donation to the church, dropping it in the collection basket on the weekend or going online to our web page, and clicking on the ONLINE GIVING button on the menu bar. Donations as of September 5th are $10, or 73% of the matching amount. We would like to try and top our goal this week. Thank you for generous support. Dear Parishioners of Ss. As is our tradition, our Kindergarteners, LCS class of 2031, joined us at the end of Mass and were escorted to lunch by our Seniors, LCS class of Student Masses will ordinarily be celebrated on Wednedays, with Mass for grades 7-12 at 10:40 and Mass for K-6 students at 1pm. You are always welcome to join us! We continued to enroll students this week...now we have 108 new-to-loyola students! What a great way to start the year! PS and PK students started their year together with Hello Days this week. Students came for just an hour to get acquainted. Next week our traveling crucifix will begin its yearlong journey, spending a week in each of our classrooms. The crucifix, provided by the local Serra International Club, is intended to promote prayer for Vocations. Fall Festival We are looking to have a new booth this year called A to Z Jars Fill any size jar with what ever you like from pencils, crayons, erasers, preserves, pickels, money, candy, washcloths, etc, etc., for people to purchase a candy number and get the surprise in the jar. Algunos se lamentan de que la gente ya no se ponga elegante para asistir a la iglesia los domingos; otros consideran que es un síntoma saludable que nos vistamos tan informalmente cuando nos reunimos ante el Señor como en los demás lugares. Sin importar cuál sea nuestra opinión sobre este tema, Santiago seguramente nos reprendería. En ambos casos, seguimos centrándonos en las apariencias, creyendo que suponen una especie de posición privilegiada ante Dios. Es cierto, Santiago critica a la comunidad que favorece a los ricos y bien vestidos mientras condena al ostracismo a los que están pobremente vestidos, pero critica aún más a quienes hacen distinciones y toman decisiones en base a criterios que nada tienen que ver con el Reino de Dios. Puede que Santiago enfoque nuestra atención hacia el Reino de Dios que describe Isaías, en el cual la gente es curada y la tierra se hace fértil para dar fruto. Jesús hoy se enfoca en este Reino de Dios cuando cura a un gentil en una región hostil a su fe judía, sin tener en cuenta el origen, la vestimenta ni la condición social de este hombre, ni siquiera su habilidad para retribuirle la atención. Isaías, Santiago y Jesús en el Evangelio según san Marcos nos llaman a ir más allá de las apariencias para averiguar dónde se debe hacer y se ha hecho la voluntad de Dios, así en la tierra como en el cielo.
