3 PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (meaning, "ad-venio in Latin or "to come to") is the season leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord s birth on Christmas. Advent devotions remind us of the meaning of the season. Special Advent devotions include the lighting of the Advent wreath; the Advent calendar which helps remind us of the season with daily thoughts and activities; Advent prayers that prepare us spiritually for the birth of Jesus Christ. When we look back and see the change of the seasons we see how fast the time has gone by. It seems that it was only yesterday we put away our summer clothes and now advent! The Advent season reminds us that the Lord is coming, that the time is short and we have to prepare ourselves for his encounter. During this holy season we don t have to lose the real meaning of Advent. We don t have to allow the consumism culture to overshadow of what we celebrate. Jesus said in today s gospel: be watchful! Be Alert! Y ou do not know then the time will come...may he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: Watch... The Lord Jesus king of the universe is coming with power and might to be our judge and vindicator, it is time for us to watch and to be alert in no falling into the enticements of the world. On Thursday November 20th Pope Francis said that the Gospel scene in which Jesus wept for Jerusalem s closed heart is repeated today with those in the Church who are afraid to let him work in their lives. Jesus weeps over Jerusalem in the same way that as He weeps over His Church, over us today, he said. In this passage Jesus weeps for the holy city because its people didn t recognize the one who brings true peace because their hearts were closed inside their own comfort zones, the Pope observed. The people of Jerusalem were content with their way of life and did not need the Lord: they failed to realize that they needed salvation. This is why they had closed their heart before the Lord, he explained. Pope Francis noted that the people of Jerusalem didn t make any time to open the doors of their hearts because they were too busy and self-satisfied, and didn t want anything to interfere with comfortable lives they were living. They didn t recognize what Jesus was talking about in the Gospel when he said that if you only knew, on this day, what brings you peace. You did not recognize the time of your visitation, the Pope explained. The Season of Advent is also an invitation for all of us as parish family to reflect on how we welcome the Lord who come daily into our lives, in all the circumstances we encounter every day. To close our heart means no to welcome the Lord. That is a negative way to turn back to the Lord. This Advent I want to be alert to watch, so that the Lord may come and I may receive him with open arms. Intentions of the Pope for December: Christmas, hope for humanity. That the birth of the Redeemer may bring peace and hope to all people of good will. Parents. That parents may be true evangelizers, passing on to their children the precious gift of faith. Fr. These young people are among 12 area seventh graders who received the Serra Club Great Promise Award in recognition of their character, leadership, generosity and service in their parish, school and local community.

Diocesan Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) The Annual Diocesan Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA), formerly known as the Annual Diocesan Appeal, is a primary source of funding to help sustain and expand ministries in the 114 parishes, 30 schools, seminary, programs and departments of the diocesan church. Our parish goal for this year is $42, As of November 17th update we are at $32,912 or 77% of our goal. We wish to thank everyone who has made a donation to the appeal and encourage others to prayerfully consider making a donation to the appeal. 7 PRIMER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO 30 DE NOVIEMBRE 2014 Catecismo de los Miércoles Miércoles 3 de Diciembre, el horario es el siguiente: VELEN! Velen! Esta palabra ocurre dos veces en el Evangelio de hoy, situada en puntos estratégicos: al principio, y en el centro. Aunque técnicamente sea una parábola, el texto es bastante breve (cuatro versículos). La doble repetición de velen no deja lugar a duda de lo que trata este relato. A menudo pensamos en Adviento como un tiempo de espera, pero en realidad es un tiempo de vigilancia, una forma muy activa de esperar la llegada del Día del Señor. Ese es el Día, más que el día de Navidad, anticipado fielmente por la comunidad cristiana, ya que usa todos sus talentos y dones para este fin, como nos lo recuerda Pablo en la carta a los corintios. Cuando usamos estos dones en fiel espera y anticipación, nos hacemos como los sirvientes de la parábola, entregados a sus tareas, no esperando como vagos, sino encargados de la labor del maestro hasta su regreso. Que nuestro Adviento sea un tiempo en que reencaminamos o rededicamos nuestra vida y nuestra comunidad a esta labor, la fidelidad activa y diligente que el Señor espera encontrar. Copyright J. S.
