3 PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 Last Thursday September 3rd the priests and the seminarians were invited to join the School Sisters of Notre Dame for their 150th anniversary of their arrival to Mankato. We had the Mass and lunch. What a great joy to remember all the sisters who from one way or another has touched the lives of so many in Mankato, but most especially in our parish of SSPP since this was the first school they were invited to come to educate the children. According to the The SSND Journey to Mankato the new sisters arrived from Milwaukee Motherhouse. Sr. M. Ambrosia as superior and to teach; Sr. M. Johanna to teach English and music; while the lay sister M. Rebecca was to take care of the house; and a candidate, Mary Helling. They traveled by railroad from Milwaukee as far as La Crosse.. And then journeyed by steamer on the Mississippi to St. Paul, Minnesota, where Fr. Sommereisen awaited them. The sisters were scheduled to arrive on Saturday Sept 2, 1865 but because of the three days over parched roads, and dust they had to make many stops. They traveled by mail coach toward Mankato. On September 3, it was ow Sunday evening and the people were still waiting. They had refused to return to their homes, some of them to their distant farms, until had greeted the travelers. At last the cry rang out: They are coming! at the end of their third day by mail coach the sisters, candidate and Fr. Sommereisen arrived in Mankato. The streets of Mankato were decorated with branches and flags and the Catholic people broke out into jubilant welcoming cries and accompanied the two coaches that carried the travelers and their luggage to the church. Here for the first time the waiting multitude saw the School Sisters of Notre Dame. the SSND continue to celebrate their jubilee arrival in Mankato. May the Lord continue to bless them with an abundance of vocations. Jubilee of Mercy: The Holy Father Pope Francis has issued a new set pastoral guidelines for the year of mercy beginning December 8, 2015 until November 20, 2016 allowing all priests to forgive the sin of abortion... One of the serious problems of our time is clearly the changed relationship with respect to life, the Pope said in a Sept. 1 letter addressed to Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization, charged with organizing the jubilee. In today s society, a widespread and insensitive mentality has become an obstacle to welcoming new life, with many who don t fully understand the deep harm done by the tragedy of abortion, he said. The Pope also pointed to how a jubilee indulgence can be obtained for the deceased and encouraged prayer for them during Mass, that the merciful face of the Father free them of the remainder of every fault. Francis then turned to the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, explaining that the experience of mercy becomes visible in the witness of concrete signs, as Jesus himself taught us. Therefore, each time that someone personally performs one or more of the 13 works of mercy, such as feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, burying the dead, willingly forgiving offenses, comforting the afflicted or praying for the living and dead, that person will surely obtain the jubilee indulgence. He stressed the importance of remembering that the reception of the indulgence must be linked first and foremost to the sacrament of reconciliation and to the celebration of the holy Eucharist, with a reflection on mercy. It will be necessary, he said, to accompany these celebrations with the profession of faith and with prayer for me and for the intentions that I bear in my heart for the good of the Church and of the entire world. 4 SEPTEMBER 6, ADULT BIBLE STUDY BOOK OF JAMES PEARLS FOR WISE LIVING We will be studying James this fall starting September 14/15, 2015 on Monday evenings at 6:30 PM and Tuesday afternoons at 1:30 PM. Sessions usually last two hours one hour for sharing our answers and one hour of DVD with Jeff Cavins. The Book of James will last for 11 weeks and we should complete our study before December (if the weather cooperates). I have heard that this study is one of the favorites. RCIA is a program designed to help non-catholics and non-practicing Catholics learn more about Catholicism through a series of classes, discussions, prayer times, and ceremonies. This program helps people grow in faith and knowledge of God as they consider becoming Catholic; although there is no obligation to join the Catholic Church. Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church RCIA program is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. If you are not yet sure whether you want to become Catholic, that s ok! Even if you already participated in a discussion group, these new groups will delve more deeply into the richness of this book. Six sessions in the fall followed by several week break to explore activities to be the-better-version-of -yourself and continuing with another six weeks in the spring. Each of the sessions will be less reading with single topics and more fun discussion time. Attend one six week session or both. Opportunities to discuss Rediscover Catholicism are Saturdays, starting Oct. 3 at 4pm; Mondays, starting Oct. 5 at noon; and Thursdays starting Oct. 8 at 6pm. Pro Life If we understand the human person as the `temple of the Holy Spirit`- the living house of God-then these latter issues fall logically into place as the crossbeams and walls of that house. All direct attacks on innocent human life, such as abortion and euthanasia, strike at the house s foundation. These directly and immediately violate the human person s most fundamental right-the right to life. Neglect of these issues is the equivalent of building our house on sand. 7 XXIII DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 6 DE SEPTIEMBRE 2015 Encuentro Mundial de las Familias NO TEMAN En estos tiempos, hay muchas razones para temer, con tan sólo mirar a nuestro alrededor. Tal parece que cada día los medios de comunicación tienen más malas noticias que anunciar: guerras, enfermedades, terrorismo, sequía, disturbios sociales, y mucho más. Algunas personas han dejado de usar los radios despertadores prefiriendo ser despertados por la sacudida de la alarma chillona y no de las malas noticias matutinas. Qué más necesitamos para darnos cuenta de que somos criaturas limitadas, y aunque hay mucho que podemos hacer para mejorar nuestro mundo, en última instancia hay mucho que simplemente no está a nuestro alcance? Para esto, nuestro amoroso Dios nos dice: Ánimo! No teman. Debemos hacer todo lo que esté a nuestro alcance para hacer de nuestro mundo un lugar mejor y más seguro, pero también debemos reconocer nuestros límites y que nuestra seguridad absoluta está en manos de Dios. Nos puede servir de consuelo la realización de que Dios nos ama sin medida, y nos dará toda la ayuda necesaria para hacer de nuestro mundo un lugar acogedor y seguro para todos. Copyright J. S.
