2 Come Holy Spirit, Fill the Hearts of Your Faithful Ones By Father Stephen Gutgsell The Solemnity of Pentecost, which we celebrate this weekend, marks the conclusion of the Easter Season and the whole Paschal Cycle going back all the way to Ash Wednesday and perhaps even back to the Christmas Season. But it also marks the beginning of the Age of the Church. That is why it is sometimes called the Birthday of the Church, although it might be more accurate to call it the Coming Out of the Church into the world to begin its work for which the Lord sends it. The name Pentecost is originally the name of the Jewish feast marking the giving of the Law by God to Moses on Mt. Sinai. It was 50 days after Passover, the time it took for the people of Israel to travel from Egypt down to the mountain of God and camp there while Moses went up to speak to God face to face. It was most appropriate that the Lord chose this day to reveal the Holy Spirit in the strong driving wind, and the tongues of fire coming to rest on each one of them. It was the way in which God manifested the new covenant He was entering into with the new People of God represented by people from all over the world who had come together in Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost. It was an event overwhelming by its signs of God s favor to His chosen ones, being Baptized in the Holy Spirit and in Fire as John the had foretold years before at the Jordan that the One coming after him would do. But that first Pentecost was not unique. In fact several more times in the Acts of the Apostles there would be described subsequent events in the early years of the Church which were quite reminiscent of that first one. (Acts 4:31, 8:17, 10:44, 16:25-26, etc.) The events of that first Pentecost were just the beginning of the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the world through the lives and the preaching of those who believe. That is why the Church in every generation since has continued to pray for A New Pentecost a new outpouring the Holy Spirit in each succeeding era of Christianity. It is what we are called to pray for in our day as well, when we say the words of the Prayer to the Holy Spirit: Come Holy Spirit, fill the Hearts of Your Faithful and Enkindle in Us the Fire of Your Love. Send forth Your Spirit and we shall be Created, and You shall renew the Face of the Earth. 3 We are just seven weeks away from the start of our Totus Tuus summer youth program! This summer s session of Totus Tuus will be held July 8 - July 13, and will help our children to learn and better understand the Luminous Mysteries and the Apostles Creed. Don t miss out on this fun filled week! On Monday, May 28, beginning at 9:00am, we will celebrate our annual Memorial Day Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery in Blair. Last year we had a tremendous crowd, and we d like to have even more this year! Please bring your own chairs/blanket, and we ll take care of the rest.
