Matthew 2 Dear Parishioners and Friends; This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany and the visit of the Magi. The story of the Magi appears only in the Gospel of Matthew. There is a mystery about the Magi. As foreigners they were knowledgeable in astronomy and understood the ancient prophesies that a Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. This Messiah was to be unlike any other, an everlasting King who would change the world forever. Wanting to see this infant King, they came bearing the unusual regal gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. When Herod learns about the reason for the visiting Magi, he makes evil plans. But God protected Jesus by having Joseph, Jesus and his mother Mary flee to Egypt. And so the story of the Magi helps us understand the significance of Jesus birth. As the Magi recognized through the star that something of great significance was taking place, they left everything and brought their most priceless treasures so that they could worship this newborn king. We, like them, recognize Jesus as our greatest treasure too. May we allow God space and room in our lives so that God s plan may come to fulfillment in our own life too and that we may transformed by the gentle love of Jesus through our own actions and words to our family, children and others. As the New Year begins, let us open our hearts to receive God s most precious gift, His only son Jesus. May God bless you! Fr. Gonyo * * * National Catholic Youth Conference 2019! BLESSED ~ BROKEN ~ GIVEN Please join us for an informational meeting in early February for youth who are interested in attending (or learning more about) the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 21-23, The NCYC is open to any youth in grades 9-12 as of September 2019 and chaperones over the age 21. The NCYC is more than a weekend trip. It is an amazing opportunity to become more connected with a small group of other high school students through almost a year of activities in preparation for being a pilgrim. It is a chance to become connected to the wider Catholic community and to figure out how you can fit in this world. This is an amazing opportunity that you don t want to miss! Our wonderful singers and musicians presented Lessons and Carols on December 16th. We are so grateful for the ministry of the St. Rita Children s Choir, St. Rita Adult and Festival Choirs, Count it All Joy group, and the Lite Choir. Thank you also to our Lectors who participated. It was a prayerful and reflective afternoon of Scripture and Song for Advent. We wish you all a Happy, Healthy New Year! ST. RITA SCHOOL Spirit of Learning Corner Here's What's Happening... + After a total of 11 days off from school, our students, faculty, and staff all returned to St. Rita s on January 2 nd ready and refreshed to start the New Year. This week many of the classes focused on the importance of the Feast of the Epiphany and the Three Wise Men as they celebrated Little Christmas. Did You Know? St. Rita School offers Before Care starting at 7:00am and After Care which is available until 6:00pm. SRS students participate in many service projects throughout the year to help those in need. Students at St. Rita have the option of a hot lunch every day from places such as Wegmans, Taco Bell, Wendy s, Salvatore s, and Bagel s Etc. There are several After School activities available to our students such as: Instrumental lessons, Karate, Lego League Jr, Choir, Drama Kids, and Spanish. Each K-5th Grade student has an active role in a St. Rita School play every year. Each 1 st - 5 th Grade class takes turns leading the school at the monthly school Mass.
