A suggested prayer for the candle lighting for the second week of Advent is: Lighting of Candles Oh Lord, stir up Your might, we beg You and come, that by Your protection we may deserve to be rescued from the threatening dangers of our sins and saved by Your deliverance. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. We encourage you to use this beautiful prayer every night before your family meal together. It is a way of reminding us of the longing of our hearts for the final coming of our Lord Jesus. Sacrament of Baptism Celebrated every Sunday at 1:00 PM. Class, which is held once a month, is required. Sacrament of Confirmation Confirmation is celebrated in our parish by the Bishop of the Diocese. There is a two-year preparation for youth 8th grade or older. Our Saturday devotion concentrates on our Blessed Mother of Medjugorje with meditation prayer and rosary. Saint Thomas the Apostle School Saint Thomas the Apostle School is a Catholic Pre-3 through 8th grade elementary school serving both the parish communities of Saint Thomas the Apostle and Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Every student in our Catholic school receives a strong foundation in all core subjects Religion, Reading, English, Math, Science, and Social Studies, along with regular classes in Spanish, Computer Technology, Music, Art and Physical Education. 3 THE PASTOR S DESK... My Dear People, His job is his desert. He s good at what he does, but its become pretty routine. The travel stopped being fun years ago. Making sales calls and pitching new clients are now second nature to him but working up enthusiasm is becoming more and more of a challenge. He makes a nice living, great benefits but the chance of owning his own business, of being his own boss, is slipping away. His messenger is his wife, who constantly reminds him of the good life he is providing for his family, who supports him when he gets stranded in his desert, who keeps the possibilities of someday alive. Her desert is her in-laws. They re nice enough, but she knows they think their son married beneath him. Family gatherings are hard she feels like an outsider, that she doesn t belong. Her messenger is her husband s great aunt. Fifty years ago, Aunt Priscilla was the outsider who married into the family. Priscilla knows what she s going through and, at every family gathering, takes her nephew s wife under her wing, where she finds welcome and love. Their desert is their child s illness. Like every loving mom and dad, they re ready to move heaven and earth for their child but what? Their daughter is making progress, but it s so slow. They worry about her future, about what they re overlooking in her care, about giving in to their frustration and fear. Their messenger is a nurse at the hospital, who stays in touch with them. She s always there to answer their questions, explain the hows and whys of various treatment options, and make sure not only that their daughter is doing OK but that Mom and Dad are OK, too. In our Gospel today, we are told John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance All of us have found ourselves in one kind of desert or another during the course of our lives. These could be deserts of loneliness, or anger, or hurt, or bitterness, or fear, but they are deserts nonetheless. But the message of our Gospel today is that besides the desert there is a messenger, one crying out to have hope in our Lord. That messenger could be anyone a loving spouse, a kind family member or friend, a compassionate caregiver, anyone who helps to strengthen us and smooth and level our way. And obviously, the rest of the story is that you and I too can be those messengers to those whom God sends into our life, to be the very presence of God for others who struggle with their own deserts as well. To you and all your loved ones, a blessed Advent, and may the Lord continue to open your hearts in preparation for His coming in the great Feast of Christmas. Sincerely yours, in Our Lord, P a g e 3

FAMILY MASS SCHEDULE Our 10:30 am Sunday Family Mass will not be held on the following Sundays: December 17, December 24, December 31 and January 7. Family Mass will resume on Sunday, January 14. SIMBANG GABI MASS Friday, December 15, :00 PM ST. THOMAS THE APOSTLE OAK ST. CHURCH Simbang Gabi (Night Mass) is a devotional 9-day series of Masses practiced by the Filipino Culture in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary in anticipation of Christmas. St. Thomas the Apostle Church will host Mass on Friday, December 15, at 7:00 pm. Reception will follow in the Community Room. All are invited. PEOPLE ARE ASKING With our Christmas Eve being on Sunday night and Christmas Day on Monday, we are getting calls asking if attending a Sunday night Mass would suffice for both of those Feasts. Of course, the answer is that that is not the case. Saturday night and Sunday morning Masses will be for the 4th Sunday of Advent, which is an entirely different Feast from Christmas itself. The celebration of the 4th Sunday of Advent is a very important part of our Church Liturgical Year and is to be celebrated as such. So please plan on attending a Mass for the 4th Sunday of Advent on either Saturday evening or Sunday morning, December Then, we welcome you to the celebration of Christmas Masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, December SOME GOOD WAYS TO PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS 1 Make some time for silence and reflection. Carve out a time to be silent and to reflect. Visit our Adoration Chapel. In this busy Season, set aside some time to rest in our Lord s presence. 2. Return to Confession. Make a good confession to prepare for the great Feast of Christmas. Bring the children with you. 3. Read some Scripture. Set aside some time to read the prophets of the Old Testament, and especially the news of the birth of our Lord in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Set yourself in the scene, and be there as Jesus is born and comes into our world. CHURCH Will be open all day and all evening on CHRISTMAS EVE, CHRISTMAS DAY, NEW YEAR S EVE, NEW YEAR S DAY The Adoration Chapel will be open, and we are counting on our regular adorers to adore during their assigned time slots as our regularly scheduled adorers will still be scheduled.
