Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine Mission Statement Our Lady of Peace is a church and shrine dedicated to the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls. 2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace February 22, 2015 Dear Parishioners, FROM OUR PASTOR For this Lent, our Holy Father Pope Francis is invi ng all of us to open our hearts to God and to overcome a globaliza on of indifference that is threatening to spread a feeling of distress and powerlessness and causing us and our communi es to withdraw into themselves, closing the door through which God comes into the world and the world comes to Him. Pope Francis defines Lent as a me of renewal and as a me of grace. Indifference he says- to our neighbor and to God represents a real tempta on for us Chris ans. Usually, when we are healthy and comfortable, we forget about others (something God the Father never does): we are unconcerned with their problems, their sufferings and the injus ces they endure. Our heart grows cold. As long as I am rela vely healthy and comfortable, he says, I do not think about those less well off. Now, to further this renewal, the Holy Father suggests: 1. If one member suffers, all suffer together The Church Chris ans are those who let God clothe them with goodness and mercy, with Christ, so as to become, like Christ, servants of God and others. Lent is a favorable me for le ng Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more like Him. This happens whenever we hear the word of God and receive the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. ( ) In this body there is no room for the indifference which so o en seems to possess our hearts. For whoever is of Christ, belongs to one body, and in Him we cannot be indifferent to one another. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy. 2. Where is your brother? Parishes and Communi es In order to receive what God gives us and to make it bear abundant fruit, we need to press beyond the boundaries of the visible Church in two ways. In the first place, by uni ng ourselves in prayer with the Church in heaven. ( ) In the second place, every Chris an community is called to go out of itself and to be engaged in the life of the greater society of which it is a part, especially with the poor and those who are far away. The Church is missionary by her very nature; she is not self-enclosed but sent out to every na on and people. Then, our Holy Father expressed his ardent desire that our parishes and our communi es, may become islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference! 3. Make your hearts firm! Individual Chris ans In order to make our hearts firm, (cf. Js 5:8), the Pope firstly underlines the importance of prayer and highlights the 24 Hours for the Lord ini a ve of the Pon fical Council for the New Evangeliza on, to take place on March Secondly, he appeals for acts of charity, and third, he says the suffering of others is a call to conversion. He concluded invi ng everyone to engage in what is called the forma on of the heart. Anyone who wishes to be merciful must have a strong and steadfast heart, closed to the tempter but open to God. Thus, during this Lent, in union with the Vicar of Christ, we ask our Lord: Make our hearts like yours. It is my prayerful hope that this Lent will prove spiritually frui ul for each one of us. May God bless you all! Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE Announcements We joyfully welcome all visitors to the Shrine! 4 Page 4 Our Lady of Peace February 22, 2015 Children and Youth Religious Education Program News The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. John 1:14 The Family as First School of Human Virtues # 15 Let us now continue discussing the virtue of obedience, in which children need to be trained since their early years. Obedience up to the age of thirteen Up to age of thirteen, approximately, lack of obedience does not give rise to serious problems: it is more a nuisance and source of exasperation to the parents. Often disobedience results in physical danger rather than moral danger. For example, a child who disobeys an instruction not to play in a particular place because it is dangerous, and then disobeys and breaks an arm. Yet this is the best time for teaching children to obey for high motives, the aim being to have them acquire the habit of obedience before they reach adolescence. So, it is not a matter of just getting children to obey: they have to obey well. It is easy for parents to rest content with a more or less blind obedience on the grounds that this produces the desired results peace and order. But we fail to realize that there is danger of mere involuntary collaboration whenever demands are made without appealing to the individual s conscience. It is not enough for the child to do what we order him to do; and certainly it does not produce the virtue of obedience. To be continued... (from Character Building, by David Isaacs, p. 181) IMPORTANT DATES February 24, 25, 26, 28 and March 3, 4, 5, and 7: First Confessions March 7: First Holy Communion Catechist Meeting Our Lady s Juggler, Chapter 5 By Anatole France The monk was touched by the juggler s simplicity, and as he was not lacking in discernment, he at once recognized in Barnaby one of those men of whom it is said in the Scriptures: Peace on earth to men of good will. And for this reason he replied- Friend Barnaby, come with me, and I will have you admitted into the monastery of which I am prior. He who guided St. Mary of Egypt in the desert set me upon your path to lead you into the way of salvation. It was in this manner, then, that Barnaby became a monk. In the monastery into which he was received the religious vied with one another in the praise of the Blessed Virgin, and in her honor each employed all the knowledge and all the skill which God had given him. The prior on his part wrote books dealing according to the rules of scholarship with the virtues of the Mother of God." To be continued (from The Book of Virtues for Young People, by William Bennet, p. 355) Catechism Office hours: Tuesday and Thursday: 9:00 am to 11:30 am and 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm Wednesday: 9:00 am to 11:30 am and 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm Saturday: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Office phone number: (408) olopccdoffice@servidoras.org Website: If you are willing to follow God s call to be a Catechist or an assistant, this is what you do: 1) Contact Sr. Angeles via at olopccd@servidoras.org for an interview during office hours. 2) Then Sr. Angeles will assist you with the Safe Environment procedure required by the Diocese of San Jose.
