2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace March 26, 2017 Dear Friends, Many people will probably agree, prayer and penance, these things I understand when it comes to Lenten practices, but alms-giving? What s this all about? Think about it with two words that may help qualify the spirit of the practice: gratitude and generosity. To give alms is simply to redirect the good gifts that God has given us to His glory, not only because that is fundamentally the reason for which we have them (to be used generously and not selfishly), but also because we have an unpayable debt to pay to God the Christian must truly understand gratitude. Therefore, generosity and gratitude help purify us from feeling entitled to all of the good things that we have or want to have, but rather to really see them all even the forgiveness of my very own sins as undeserved gift that God has given to me because he loves me. Therefore, since Lent is a time to really begin to take our focus from self and turn it to God, we must do so in a way that is all-encompassing. Why? Because if I begin to pray and too fast and fail to understand the deeply rooted truth that we must be grateful, we would be greatly impeded in the process of conversion. It would be like bird seeing the heavens, fit and light and ready for takeoff, but trying to go with a big huge boulder chained to its leg not gonna get very high! True gratitude encompasses the whole past of one s life: each time that we see all things as God does, even to our very own past sins that are transformed into the felix culpa or happy fault, if we maintain a vision of faith. When our entire past is seen with gratitude, we can be like Peter, sin forgiven became for him a new source of fidelity. This is how asceticism or the Lenten practices of penance and almsgiving truly become joy-filled expressions, expressions of gratitude. G.K. Chesterton, speaking of the Joy of St. Francis, explains that the great saint may be said to be one who mixes all of his thoughts [and actions] with thanks: It is the highest and holiest of the paradoxes that the man who really knows he cannot pay his debt will be forever paying it. He will be forever giving back what he cannot give back, and cannot be expected to give back. He will be always throwing things away into a bottomless pit of unfathomable thanks. Men who think they are too modern to understand this are in fact too mean to understand it; we are most of us too mean to practice it. We are not generous enough to be ascetics; one might almost say not genial enough to be ascetics. A man must have magnanimity of surrender, of which he commonly only catches a glimpse in first love, like a glimpse of our lost Eden. But whether he sees it or not, the truth is in that riddle; that the whole world has, or is, only one good thing; and it is a bad debt. (G.K. Chesterton, St. Francis, Ch. 5) The teaching of Jesus is always inviting us to give without expecting or seeking a return. (Cf., Lk 6:34) In the parables, Jesus is asks us to give of ourselves without measure. (Cf., Lk 14:12-14) We are to give to those who cannot make a return, so that our self-offering through charity becomes our gift, rather than the fruits we receive from the gift given. St. John of Avila expresses this idea beautifully: The heart is moved by love more than it benefits from it; for one who gives a benefit to another gives something that he has, but one who loves gives himself along with what he has, and there remains nothing more to give. Let us take Saint Paul, for example, as a clear model of grateful generosity. The strength that he had that day he was stricken from his horse on the Damascus road and gave up all for Christ didn t weary at all. On the contrary, twenty-one years later he can write to the Corinthians: I am still more, with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, far worse beatings, and numerous brushes with death. Five times at the hands of the Jews I received forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, etc.,... through hunger and thirst, through frequent fastings, through cold and exposure and besides all else... my anxiety for all the churches. If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. (2 Cor 11: 23-28) Let us ask through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary to be generous in our giving. To be ready to give without counting the cost, without asking things back, with the only desire to spend ourselves for God s glory and the salvation of souls, generously like Jesus the supreme model of human giving. 3 Fourth Sunday of Lent Friendly Parish Reminders 1. Pets, no matter how small, unless they are certified service animals, are not allowed anywhere on the property. 2. Remember to keep and observe the silent, prayerful atmosphere of the church, especially on Sundays in between masses. 3. Respect and help to keep the church and the grounds clean by picking up any trash. 4. Do not move or attempt to move or ignore any signs or barriers on the property. 5. Help to cultivate a friendly and familial atmosphere of Our Lady of Peace by being welcoming to all your neighbors and other parishioners, especially visitors. Be respectful to the priests, religious sisters and staff of Our Lady of Peace, especially when they are giving instructions or direction. They are doing this for your well-being and safety. John 1:14 Discipline : The Basics Discipline itself does not break spirits. On the contrary, it gives youngsters the selfcontrol necessary to use their inborn energy to its full potential. A high spirit an self-control are not mutually exclusive characteristics. A child who is born with the first and learns the latter through his parents will maximize both gifts. Consistency Consistency means reacting similarly to a recurrent behavior. One-hundred-percent consistency is not possible, not as long as parents are disciplining kids, and it is not something easy such as untamed circus tigers. Nor is total consistency desirable. Sometimes flexibility is the wiser course. Are we praying the Rosary every day? Do we pray in the morning and offer God our day through the intercession of Mary? How do we prepare for Sunday Mass? Do we prepare the readings beforehand?
