2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace December 30, 2018 Dear Friends, Happy Feast of the Holy Family! Question: how important is the family? Let s take a look. St. John Paul II once said that the family is the where we learn to be human, where values are passed along and safeguarded. (Familiaris Consortio, 43) The Word value is defined as the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. Do values depend on something objective, or is it something completely subjective? Today s normal way of thinking will say each one has his own set of values, this is valuable for me And I wouldn t dare force my values on someone else. If that is the case, nothing has true inherent value, not even another person only that which strikes interest in the subject. If interest ceases in a certain object, so does value. Sadly, this is what reigns both in theory and sadly in practice. St. John Paul II identifies the gravity of this situation when he says: One cannot fail to be worried by the decline of many fundamental values,... these values include respect for human life from the moment of conception, respect for marriage in its indissoluble unity, and respect for the stability of the family. Moral permissiveness strikes especially at this most sensitive sphere of life and society.... Finally, there is the desacralization that often turns into dehumanization : the individual and the society for whom nothing is sacred suffer moral decay, in spite of appearances. (Dives in Misericordia, 12) Does this desacralization or dehumanization indeed exist? Well, if we turn to the fashionable or trendy currents of relativism and secularization, which reject fundamental values and promote subjective-individual values do whatever is good for you, it seems inevitable. One can easily identify that what has resulted is a value system that is pleasure-based, i.e., hedonistic. Hedonism, according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, claims that only pleasure has worth or value and only pain or displeasure has disvalue or the opposite of worth. The greater the pleasure, greater the value; and something is worthwhile as long as-and while-it produces pleasure. The main value is the sensible, visible pleasure for some, sexual for others, emotional or sentimental for others. In this way, a religion is valuable, good, true, if it produces emotions of peace, consolation, repose. The cross is, in this line, of the greatest disvalue. It is madness or foolishness. (Cf., 1 Cor 1,18) Within this climate, the family fulfills a function of capital importance: the correction of anti-values that children aggressively receive through the different means of communication (movies, television and internet) and sadly through the schools (beginning at young ages). These channels promote as values (which are truly antivalues) the ideals of hedonism, consumerism, lust, violence, revenge, a disposable message of anti-life, anti-sacrificial love & commitment, anti-marriage, anti-virtue and anti-god. If the family acts passively against this, we are allowing ourselves and our children to hold values that are materialistic and Godless. We will digress in the name of progress; and we will become slaves and sub-human in the name of freedom and innovation. What are some of the solutions? What can and should the family do to help promote the beauty, the truth and the goodness of human life? There are four things that the family can do in this regard, according to St. John Paul II: One, the persons of the family must always seek to grow in communion with one another. Husbands and wives, parents and children must seek to deepen the bonds of love that join them. 3 Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Page 3 Two, families need to be at the service of life. He encouraged spouses to be generous in bringing new life into the world, as well as being diligent in raising those children in the faith. Three, families need to contribute to society. Families should foster deep bonds of communion with other families, and work to ensure the protection of families through political means. Finally, families are called to share in the life and mission of the Church. Families should come together for the Sacraments of course, but also joining together for prayer, scripture study, faith study, charitable works and evangelization. Perhaps in these four tasks there is an examination of conscience for each of us: how to I build, strengthen and heal the bonds of love within my family? How do I help my family serve life? What can my family do to strengthen communion with other neighborhood families? and how can my family better share in the life and mission of the Church? Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. 6 Page 6 Our Lady of Peace December 30, 2018 Plenary Indulgence What is a Plenary Indulgence? A Plenary Indulgence is the full remission of temporal punishment due for sins which have already been forgiven. Who Can Gain A Plenary Indulgence? To be capable of gaining an indulgence for oneself, it is required that one be baptized, not excommunicated, in the state of grace at least at the completion of the prescribed works, and a subject of the one granting the indulgence. Who Can I get a Plenary Indulgence for? Indulgences can be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth. Conditions for gaining the Plenary Indulgence: Sacramental Confession (within 8 days) Holy Communion (within 8 days) Prayer for the Intentions of the Holy Father Recitation or singing of the Te Deum (written below), on the final day of the year, to offer thanks to God for gifts received throughout the course of the entire year. Recitation or singing of the Veni Creator (written below), on the first day of the year to implore divine assistance for the course of the whole year. Te Deum (to be publicly recited/sung on December 31st) You are God, we praise you: You are the Lord: we acclaim you; You are the eternal Father: All creation worships you. To you all angels, all the powers of heaven, Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. Throughout the world, the holy Church acclaims you: Father of majesty unbounded, Your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, And the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the King of Glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us free, you did not spurn the Virgin s womb. You overcame the sting of death, And opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God s right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help your people, Bought with the price of your own blood, And bring us with your saints to glory everlasting. V: Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance. R: Govern and uphold them now and always. V: Day by day we bless you. R: We praise your name forever. V: Keep us today, Lord, from all sin. R: Have mercy on us, Lord have Mercy. V: Lord, show us your Love and Mercy. R: for we put our trust in you. V: In you, Lord, is our hope: R: and we shall never hope in vain. Amen. Veni Creator (to be publicly recited/sung on January 1st) Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest, and in our souls take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heavenly aid to fill the hearts which Thou hast made. O comforter, to Thee we cry, O heavenly gift of God Most High, O fount of life and fire of love, and sweet anointing from above. Thou in Thy sevenfold gifts are known; Thou, finger of God's hand we own; Thou, promise of the Father, Thou Who dost the tongue with power imbue. Kindle our sense from above, and make our hearts o'erflow with love; with patience firm and virtue high the weakness of our flesh supply. Far from us drive the foe we dread, and grant us Thy peace instead; so shall we not, with Thee for guide, turn from the path of life aside. Oh, may Thy grace on us bestow the Father and the Son to know; and Thee, through endless times confessed, of both the eternal Spirit blest. Now to the Father and the Son, Who rose from death, be glory given, with Thou, O Holy Comforter, henceforth by all in earth and heaven. Amen.
