2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace January 11, 2015 Announcements Dear Parishioners, FROM OUR PASTOR The Christmas Season, which ends today, gave us opportunity to contemplate the Child Jesus in the poor gro o of Bethlehem, lovingly tended by Mary and Joseph. God entrusts every child to his parents: and thus we see how important is the family founded on marriage, the cradle of life and love! May the Holy Family be the model and school of simplicity and pa ence for all the families in our parish. I pray to our Lord that our families too may be welcoming places where these li le ones may grow not only in good health but also in faith and love for God. As we celebrate the Feast of the Bap sm of the Lord today, I want to take this opportunity to reflect with you about one par cular effect of Bap sm admission into the Church following a magnificent homily by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. In the account of the Gospel, St. Luke says: when all the people were bap zed, and when Jesus had also been bap zed, and was praying (Lk 3:21), He speaks with his Father. And we may be certain that He did not only speak for himself but also of us and for us; He also spoke of me, of each one of us and for each one of us. And then the Evangelist tells us that above the Lord in prayer, Heaven was opened. Jesus entered into contact with the Father, Heaven opened above Him. On the day of our Bap sm, the Heavenly Father also repeats these words to each one of us. He says: You are my child. Bap sm is adop on and admission into God s family, into communion with the Most Holy Trinity, into communion with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. For this very reason, Bap sm should be administered in the Name of the Most Holy Trinity. These words are not merely a formula; they are reality. They mark the moment when we are reborn as children of God. From being the children of human parents, they also become the children of God in the Son of the living God. In the New Testament St. Paul tells us: He saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regenera on and renewal in the Holy Spirit (Ti 3:5). A washing of regenera on: Bap sm is not only a word, it is not only something spiritual but also implies ma er. All the reali es of the earth are involved. Bap sm does not only concern the soul. Human spirituality invests the totality of the person, body and soul. God s ac on in Jesus Christ is an ac on of universal efficacy. Christ took flesh and this con nues in the sacraments in which ma er is taken on and becomes part of the divine ac on. We can now ask precisely why water should be the sign of this totality. Water is the element of fer lity. Without water there is no life. Thus, in all the great religions water is seen as the symbol of motherhood, of frui ulness. For the Church Fathers, water became the symbol of the maternal womb of the Church. Tertullian, a Church writer of the second and third centuries, said something surprising. He said: Never is Christ without water. By these words, Tertullian meant that Christ is never without the Church. In Bap sm we are adopted by the Heavenly Father, but in this family that He establishes there is also a mother, Mother Church. Man cannot have God as Father, the ancient Chris an writers were already saying, unless he has the Church as mother. So we could say that we are born out of the womb of the Church. Hence, we do not become members of the Church as a brick is added to brick in a house. Bap sm incorporates us into the Mys cal Body of Christ as cells expand from central cells and so we become partakers of God s divine nature. We are accepted as brothers and sisters into the family of the Church, a great family of Chris ans. We joyfully welcome all visitors to the Shrine! Knights of Columbus Invite you to their coffee & donut sale after all the morning masses. Diorama Success! Special Thank You to the Wildanger Family, the volunteers, and all those who worked behind the scenes to make the first ever diorama a success. Over 6,000 people came to view the diorama since it was open in December. It is our hope that the 2015 diorama will be an even bigger success. Mass Inten on Book is now closed. John 1:14 The Family as First School of Human Virtues # 9 Continuing with our series about the family, let us take a brief look at the virtues by age level, keeping in mind the basic features of each age level and the nature of the virtues themselves. From thirteen to fifteen years old: Modesty Moderation Simplicity Sociability Friendship Respect Patriotism From the age of thirteen to fifteen, it seems desirable, in view of the young person s greater awareness of his own intimacy, to insist especially on virtues linked with temperance in the first place. With this act of humble love on the part of the Son of God the heavens open and the Holy Spirit is visibly manifest as a dove, while a voice from on high expresses the Father s pleasure, who points to his only begotten Son, the Beloved. This is an authentic manifestation of the Most Holy Trinity, which witnesses to Jesus divinity, his being the promised Messiah, he whom God sent to free his people so that they might be saved (cf. Isaiah 40:2)....the Lord God comes with power to destroy the works of sin and his arm exercises dominion to disarm the Evil One; but let us remember that this arm is the arm stretched out upon the cross and that Jesus power is the power of him who suffers for us: this is the power of God, different from the power of the world; in this way God comes to destroy sin. Jesus truly acts as the Good Shepherd who feeds the flock and gathers it together that it not be scattered (cf. Isaiah 40:10-11), and he offers his life itself so that it have life. It is through Jesus redemptive death that man is freed from the reign of sin and is reconciled with the Father; it is through his resurrection that man is saved from eternal death and is made victorious over the Evil One. 9 Baptism of the Lord Page 9 Middle School Rally The Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministries for the Diocese of San Jose is hosting its 4 th annual Middle School Rally for all youth in grades 6-8 on Saturday, January 31 from 1-6pm at St. Frances Cabrini Parish. The rally is a day of fun activities, live music, skits, and features a dynamic keynote speaker, David Calavitta and a closing Mass presided by our Bishop PJ McGrath. Incentive: The Office of Youth & Young Adults for the Diocese will sponsor a pizza party for the most attended group from a parish youth group and also from a Catholic school.
