2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace May 11, st Reading: Acts 2:14A,36-41 Psalm: 23:1-2A,3B-6 2nd Reading: 1 Peter 2:20B-25 Gospel: John 10:1-10 Dear Parishioners, FROM OUR PASTOR Easter is the exodus, the passage of human beings from slavery to sin and evil to the freedom of love and goodness. Because God is life, life alone, and we are his glory: the living man (cf. Irenaeus, Adversus Haereses, 4,20,5-7). On this Fourth Sunday of Easter let us consider yet another effect of Christ s Resurrection. He has gained for us the liberty of the children of God. The Resurrection, together with the sending of the Holy Spirit, call us to freedom (cf. Gal 5: 13), because for freedom Christ has set us free (Gal 5:1). Since our Lord is both our Creator and our Judge, it follows that in this world, freedom does not mean the right to do whatever we please, but rather it means the right to do whatever we ought. And ought implies order, purpose, values, God. It is in this sense that freedom implies building a communion and a participation... upon three inseparable aspects: - the relation of man with the world, as lord; - with people, as brother; - and with God, as son. (DP 322) Each one of us has been given freedom to attain the goal of our life, which is none other but union with God. However, nowadays, people have extended in a great way the range of the abuses of freedom, and this leads to new forms of slavery, very dangerous ones, because they are disguised under the appearance of freedom. This is the paradox, the profound drama of our time: in the name of freedom, slavery is imposed. (Saint John Paul II, 1992) St. Peter already warned against these abuses and exhorted the faithful to be truly free without using your freedom as a pretext for evil (1 Pt 2:16), and St. Paul admonished us not to use freedom as an excuse to serve the flesh. (Cf. Gal 5:13) It is in God in whom we attain true freedom. (Evangelii Gaudium, 170) Then, authentic freedom identifies with holiness, with the New Law, with the Christian faith and with charity. It is liberty of the children of God (Rom 8:21). Freedom has truth as its foundation as Our Lord showed when He said, the truth will set you free (Jn 8:32). You will know whether you live in true freedom if you allow the Holy Spirit to lead you: The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom (2 Cor 3:17). This is why the Holy Father wrote: There is no greater freedom than that of allowing oneself to be guided by the Holy Spirit, renouncing the attempt to plan and control everything to the last detail, and instead letting Him enlighten, guide and direct us, leading us wherever He wills. (Evangelii Gaudium, 180) St. Thomas Aquinas teaches, Thus, he who avoids evil not because it is evil, but because it is God s command, is not free; but he who avoids evil because it is evil, that one is free. The Holy Spirit, who makes the soul perfect interiorly through the good habit, accomplishes this. The result is that the soul abstains from evil because of love, as if it were God s command. Therefore it is called free, not because it rejects divine law, but because it is inclined by good habits to do what is required by the divine law. I cannot conclude without expressing my prayerful good wishes to all mothers. As Blessed Columba Marmion has written: God is love, and so that we may have some idea of this love, He gives a share of it to mothers. I commend you very specially to Our Lady of Fatima whose pilgrimage in her honor we begin this 13 th of May. May God bless you! Fr. The Eucharist is the actual body, blood, soul, and divinity of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. By adoring the Eucharist we are reminded in a very tangible way of God s love for humanity and his promise to mankind, 168 HOURS in a week. It takes ~336 people to keep adora on going 24/7, and another 75 adorers as subs tutes. That is a total of 411 people. Will you be among the few? Perpetual adora on is forever, but one s life changes over me. Don t be afraid to commit to adora on, even if you might have to change your commitment in the future. All adorers and future adorers! 7 4th Sunday of Easter Page 7 Mary and the Carmelite Mystics In the extensive writing about the Carmelite mystics there is, I think one major lacuna. Not nearly enough attention has been given to the place of Mary in the mystical journey. On its coming to Europe in the mid-13th century, the Carmelite Order developed over a period of about 300 years several images of the Virgin. Firstly, she was Patron. The hermits chose her on Mount Carmel as their Patron by the medieval symbolism of dedicating their first church to her. Henceforth they would serve her as a feudal Lady, and she would protect them as her vassals. The second image developed was Mother. The Lady of the Order was also its Mother. Thirdly, the idea of Sister developed. The Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, to use the ancient title of the Order, realized that their Patron and Mother was also Sister. Finally, the Carmelites focused on Mary as Virgin, but not so much in terms of chastity or physical integrity, but as the Virgin of the Most Pure Heart. Mary was the ideal fulfilment of the programmatic aim of The Institute of the First Monks, to offer to God a heart holy and pure from all actual stain of sin. But behind all these four images of Mary Patron, Mother, Sister and Virgin of the Most Pure Heart there is a deeper reality: Mary is the gentle, loving presence for Carmelites. But she is more: she is the Teacher and Guide of the mystics. In 1917, Mary appeared to three children in Fatima, Portugal, on those days and invited all the world to pray for peace.
