2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace February 1, 2015 Dear Parishioners, FROM OUR PASTOR Tomorrow forty days after Christmas the Church will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord that reminds us the event described in the Gospel of Luke (2:22-40). According to this gospel, Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem forty days (inclusive) after his birth to complete Mary s ritual purification after childbirth, and to perform the redemption of the firstborn son, in obedience to the Law of Moses, sacrificing a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. As Pope Francis pointed out, this feast is also known as the Feast of the Encounter. (2/2/14) This is the encounter between Jesus and his people represented by Simeon and Anna. The Gospel records that Simeon had been promised that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord s Christ (Lk 2:26). In turn, Simeon prophesied to Mary her future sorrows: Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed (Lk 2:34-35). The elderly prophetess Anna also encountered Jesus in the Temple, and offered prayers and praise to God for Him, and spoke to everyone there about Jesus and his role in the redemption of Israel (Lk 2:36-38). This celebration will be also the occasion for the 19 th World Day of Consecrated Life which this year becomes particularly special since Pope Francis has dedicated it to Consecrated Life, where the saving encounter with Jesus, he says, transforms our life. (Rejoice! A letter to consecrated men and women) This is why St. John Paul II instituted on this particular feast the annual celebration of the Day of Consecrated Life. The feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple is an eloquent icon of the total offering of one s life for all those who are called to show forth in the Church and in the world, by means of the evangelical counsels. (St. John Paul II, 01/06/1997) What is then Consecrated Life? Let me answer with the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: It is the state of life which is constituted by the profession of the evangelical counsels, while not entering into the hierarchical structure of the Church, belongs undeniably to her life and holiness. (2103) Christ proposes the evangelical counsels, in their great variety, to every disciple. The perfection of charity, to which all the faithful are called, entails for those who freely follow the call to consecrated life the obligation of practicing chastity in celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom, poverty and obedience. It is the profession of these counsels, within a permanent state of life recognized by the Church that characterizes the life consecrated to God. (Cf ) The state of consecrated life is thus one way of experiencing a more intimate consecration, rooted in Baptism and dedicated totally to God. In the consecrated life, one proposes to follow Christ more nearly, to give oneself to God who is loved above all and, pursuing the perfection of charity in the service of the Kingdom, to signify and proclaim in the Church the glory of the world to come. (2687; 933) Consecrated life is [ultimately] a divine gift, said Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. The parents of Jesus were the ones who presented Him in the temple, so I d like to repeat the words that once in 2004, St. John Paul II addressed to parents. He s said: God has entrusted to you the peculiar task of guiding young people on the path to holiness. Be an example to them of generous fidelity to Christ. Encourage them to put out into the deep without hesitation, responding eagerly to the invitation of the Lord. Some He calls to family life, others to consecrated life or to the ministerial priesthood. Help them to discern their path, and to become true friends of Christ and his true disciples. Today and always, let us keep in our prayers these men and women that faithfully responded to God s calling to live their lives in greater intimacy with the Divine Spouse. Moreover, my dear friends in Christ, if, in the depths of your hearts, you feel the same call to the priesthood or consecrated life, do not be afraid to follow Christ on the royal road of the Cross! (St. John Paul II, WYD 2002, Closing Homily, 5) May God bless you all! Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE Announcements We joyfully welcome all visitors to the Shrine! 8 Page 8 Our Lady of Peace February 1, 2015 Children and Youth Religious Education Program News The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. John 1:14 The Family as First School of Human Virtues # 12: Motives for Being Obedient (Part II) Let us now continue discussing the virtue of obedience, in which children need to be trained since their early years. Motives for Being Obedient Obedience is also the source of true freedom. Attachment to one s own will makes one a salve. We know that the will, by its very nature, tends towards the good, but very often the intellect does not recognize where good really lies. Very often we have to have recourse to competent authorities to check whether what we want and what is really good are one and the same thing. Obedience, in these situations, helps give us strength and perseverance in reaching out for the goals we set ourselves in life. The motives available for obeying are then, quite profound you do not come across them every day, especially not in young children. However, if we parents fail to keep them very much in mind, there is a danger that we expect our children to be obedient for very poor motives. To be continued... Again, he was unable to work as he would have been willing to do. The warmth of the sun and the broad daylight were as necessary to enable him to display his brilliant parts as to the trees if flower and fruit should be expected of them. In wintertime he was nothing more than a tree stripped of its leaves, and as it were dead. The frozen ground was hard to the juggler, and, like the grasshopper of which Marie de France tells us, the inclement season caused him to suffer both cold and hunger. But as he was simple-natured he bore his ills patiently. He had never meditated on the origin of wealth, nor upon the inequality of human conditions. He believed firmly that if this life should prove hard, the life to come could not fail to redress the balance, and this hope upheld him. He never blasphemed God s name; he lived uprightly He was a worthy man who feared God, and was very devoted to the Blessed Virgin. Never did he fail on entering a church to fall upon his knees before the image of the Mother of God, and offer up this prayer to her: "Blessed Lady, keep watch over my life until it shall please God that I die, and when I am dead, ensure to methe possession of the joys of Paradise." (from The Book of Virtues for Young People, by William Bennet, pp ) To be continued... Faith leads us to employ our God-given talents in God s service.
