2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace April 27, st Reading: Acts 2:42-47 Psalm: 118:2-4,13-15, nd Reading: 1 Peter 1:3-9 Gospel: John 20:19-31 Dear Parishioners, FROM OUR PASTOR Today, our hearts are overfilled with joy as we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday along with the canonization of the Blessed Pope John Paul II and Blessed Pope John XXIII. Indeed a true festival of faith and a festival of holiness. We are also very honored and pleased to have among us the presence of our dear Bishop McGrath and the countless pilgrims who have come to celebrate this special day at Our Lady of Peace. To all: Welcome! This feast of Divine Mercy, as recorded in the Diary of St. Faustina, is intended to be a refuge and a shelter for all souls and especially for poor sinners. (Diary, 699) In numerous occasions Jesus stated: The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain the complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary 699); I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy. (Diary 1109) Therefore, let no soul fear to draw near to Me, says our Lord even though its sins be as scarlet My mercy is greater than your sins, and those of the entire world Come then with trust to draw graces from this fountain The graces of My mercy are drawn by the means of one vessel only, and that is trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive. (Diary, 1074, 699, 1485, 1578) Furthermore, in June of 2002, under Saint John Paul II s direction, the Church granted a plenary indulgence for the faithful who fully participate in Divine Mercy Sunday. The image of the Divine Mercy that is publicly on display today is to serve as a visual reminder of all that Jesus did for our Redemption. Our Lord asked St. Faustina Kowalska: I want the image solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it. (Diary, 341) On page after page, the Diary of St. Faustina proclaims the message of God s merciful love as the very heart of the Gospel. It was not a new teaching, of course: just a new expression and a clear focus on the very center of the Catholic Faith: the loving kindness and compassion of God. This Feast emerged from the very depths of My mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of my tender mercies. Every soul believing and trusting in My mercy will obtain it. (Diary, 420). Undoubtedly, the newly proclaimed Saint John Paul II had a unique role in passing on the light of Divine Mercy that will illumine the way for the men and women of the third millennium. A year after establishing Divine Mercy Sunday, on April 22, 2001 Saint John Paul II re-emphasized its message in the resurrection context of Easter: Jesus said to St. Faustina one day: Humanity will never find peace until it turns with trust to Divine Mercy. Divine Mercy! This is the Easter gift that the Church receives from the risen Christ and offers to humanity. I d like to conclude with the words that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI pronounced at the funeral mass of Saint John Paul II: Divine Mercy: the Holy Father found the purest reflection of God s mercy in the Mother of God. He, who at an early age had lost his own mother, loved his divine Mother all the more. He heard the words of the crucified Lord as addressed personally to him: Behold your Mother. And so he did as the beloved disciple did: he took her into his own home (Jn 19:27) Totus tuus. And from the Mother he learned to conform himself to Christ. Let us hear once again the words of Saint John Paul II saying: Be apostles of Divine Mercy under the maternal and loving guidance of Mary. (06/22/1993) Happy Divine Mercy Sunday to all! 3 Divine Mercy Sunday Page 3 Will You Give Him the Gift of One Hour? What could you gain by spending that hour in the presence of our Savior, Jesus, in silence.. Peace of mind? Tranquility? Graces? The Eucharist is the actual body, blood, soul, and divinity of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. By adoring the Eucharist we are reminded in a very tangible way of God s love for humanity and his promise to mankind, 168 HOURS in a week. It takes ~336 people to keep adora on going 24/7, and another 75 adorers as subs tutes. That is a total of 411 people. Will you be among the few? Perpetual adora on is forever, but one s life changes over me. Don t be afraid to commit to adora on, even if you might have to change your commitment in the future. The Divine Mercy Message and Devotion The message of The Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us all of us. And, he wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC: A - Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world. B - Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us. C - Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive. This message and devotion to Jesus as The Divine Mercy is based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun who, in obedience to her spiritual director, wrote a diary of about 600 pages recording the revelations she received about God's mercy. Even before her death in 1938, the devotion to The Divine Mercy had begun to spread. The message and devotional practices proposed in the Diary of Saint Faustina and set forth in this web site and other publications of the Marians of the Immaculate Conception are completely in accordance with the teachings of Church and are firmly rooted in the Gospel message of our Merciful Savior. Properly understood and implemented, they will help us grow as genuine followers of Christ. Spend time to learn more about the mercy of God, learn to trust in Jesus, and live your life as merciful to others, as Christ is merciful to you. - Taken from

4 Page 4 Our Lady of Peace April 27, 2014 Please Welcome Our Statue of St. John Paul II! On April 14, :30am, Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine welcomed the addition of the statue of Blessed John Paul II, to be canonized on Divine Mercy Sunday. The Diocese of San Jose, with help from the Bethany Group (church design consultants) of Texas, worked with the construction company of Jos Albanese and Steinberg Associates (architects) to import, obtain city permits, construct the base, and mount the new statue which was shipped from the PROGETTO ARTE POLI S.r.l studio in Italy. This project is a result of the 13,893 rosaries pledged to bring the 7 bronze statue to our parish the first of its kind in the U.S.A. Over $50,353 has been donated to the parish over a four month period for this project. Thanks to our devoted parishioners and to the very generous construction and mounting work donated by Phil Albanese of Jos Albanese Construction, the parish has been able to cover the purchase and expenses of realizing our dream. Parishes and religious communities across Northern California have been invited to the unveiling and dedication of the statue by His Excellency, Patrick J. McGrath, Bishop of San Jose, at the 2pm Divine Mercy Mass. St. John Paul II is now situated across from our 32 statue of the blessed Virgin Mary, with his loving gaze facing the parish, asking for intercession on our behalf: Holy Mary, Mother of God, most honored of virgins, mother of Christ, mother of the Church, mother of divine grace, mother most pure, mother of chaste love, model of motherhood and good counsel, mirror of justice, cause of our joy Shrine of the Spirit, glory of Israel, vessel of selfless devotion, mystical Rose, Ark of the covenant, gate of heaven, morning star, health of the sick, refuge of sinners, comfort of the troubled, Queen of angels,patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs, confessors, virgins, all saints, families, and of peace, Pray for Us. Blessed be the name of the Virgin Mary, Now and forever.
