2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine February 17, 2019 F P D Putting on the Good Old Sunday Best Dear Friends, As we go through the value of preparing ourselves for mass, even trying to begin things on Saturday, what about the way we dress? Does it matter? Well.yes, it does. It matters, especially if we recall Who it is we are coming to meet, and what is the purpose for this meeting praise, reverence, adoration and thanksgiving. We would find it silly to put on a suit and tie or a formal dress to go to bed, why would we think it to be okay or normal to go to Church in our pajamas, or pajama-like clothing? Same goes for the gym, do we ever find ourselves on the treadmill with a blazer and tie or business suit? Probably not, but do we come to mass in things that could easily be worn for the treadmill or for the court? Or what about if I plan to go to the bar to root on the Warriors after mass or if I wanted to catch mass before the 49ers game down the street? Should I go to the game dressed up nicely or go to mass in my team gear? This is a major dilemma I know! There once was a phrase termed the Sunday best, which refers to one s best clothing for going to church. As the phrase suggests, this would be special clothes that set aside for the Lord. The way that we dress is related to our appreciation for the sacredness of Sunday worship. We must however, be very careful to avoid superficiality or doing any of this with vanity in mind. Dressing nicely does not mean extravagance, name-brand clothing, or a high price-tag. It simply means putting on something modest, nice, dignified that we have set aside for the Lord clothing that is prepared and reserved for Sunday only. Allow your dress to be an expression of the priority you give to Mass rather than what will take place after mass. The mass is something truly AWEsome (intended emphasis on the awe ) In most situations we dress the part. In mass, when we are in Church, we are approaching the King of all Creation, the Savior who suffered and died for me. And we influence one another in this regard. When we dress with a sense that we are giving honor and glory to the one we have come to meet, we will send a signal to those around us that this is important to me. And on the contrary, when the mass becomes something casual, we become casual about the mass. The mass should be seen as a significant event, each and every time. Because it is. It is sacred, transcendental, and holy. We are all, in communion, lifted up into the heavenly heights at every Mass, as it is an anticipation of heavenly glory. (Catechism 1403, 1370) Therefore, it should prompt within us an approach that is unique. In other words, I don t approach it in the same way that I approach the mall, or the movie theater, or my favorite fast food spot. What we are talking about here is not a matter of fashion or taste. It is a matter of virtue. Men and women alike, when virtue begins to guide our lives, we are led by them in all areas inside and out. The word virtue comes from the Latin virtutem, meaning worth, humanliness, virtue, character, excellence The root word of virtue is the Latin, vir, which literally means person of courage, honor, and nobility. Religion falls under the cardinal virtue of Justice, which means that we give to God what is due to Him. We can never really give to God everything that is due to Him, but what we can do is give Him praise, reverence, adoration and thanksgiving. Herein lies the secret of the Mass, it is a concrete and perfect way for us to praise, reverence, adore and thank God. Although we do not want to fall into the sin of the scribes and Pharisees, doing things superficially by cleansing the outside of cup and dish, but inside we are full of plunder and self-indulgence, we do want to present ourselves before the Lord as one who is in awe of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. (cf., Mt 23:25) Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian
