Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church & Shrine Mission Statement Our Lady of Peace is a church and shrine dedicated to the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls. 2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace October 7, 2018 Dear Friends, For the past weeks we have been looking at virtues, some that are more or less known then others, most of which have been forgotten. In addition to good ol will power and repetition of the good works, I would like to offer an aid to the work in fostering virtue. Now, I will tell you from the outset, the efficacy of this secret weapon is not endorsed firstly by me, but by our Heavenly Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our Lady revealed to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche additional benefits for those who devoutly pray the Rosary, which are known as the 15 promises for those who recite the Rosary. There are two that pertain specifically to the battle of virtue over vice. In the third promise, she says: The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin and defeat heresies. And the fourth promise, she adds: It will cause good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire for Eternal Things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means. I wholeheartedly recommend the Rosary as a means to foster virtue and overcome vice. We are caught up in this battle, whether we like it or not, to stand aside or to remain passive in the face of one s own vices is to concede defeat. Holy Mother Church assures us of the need for us to engage in the work of sanctity and salvation it is a personal matter to such a degree that not even God won t force it, as St. Augustine says: God created us without us: but he did not will to save us without us, according to St. Augustine (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1847). As Lumen Gentium (no. 42) expresses it: the faithful are invited and obliged to holiness and the perfection of their own state of life. Accordingly let all of them see that they direct their affections rightly, lest they be hindered in their pursuit of perfect love by the use of worldly things (cf. 1 Cor. 7:31). Therefore, as we begin the month of October, which is commonly held to be the Month of the Holy Rosary, I would like to offer you with some practical points given to us by St. Louis de Motfort to help us pray the Rosary well. Although there are more in his book the Secret of the Rosary, here I will just mention a few: Purity of intention: It is not so much the length of a prayer, but the fervor with which it is said which pleases Almighty God and touches His Heart. One single Hail Mary that is said properly is worth more than one hundred and fifty that are badly said. With Attention: we must also pray the Rosary with real concentration, for God listens more to the voice of the heart than that of the mouth ( ) Of course, you cannot possibly say your Rosary without having a few involuntary distractions and it is hard to say even one Hail Mary without your imagination troubling you a little. The one thing you can do, however, is to say your Rosary without giving in to distractions deliberately. Third, says St. Louis, recite often your Rosary, with faith, with humility, with confidence and with perseverance. And he explains: Our Lord, Jesus Christ, told us to follow His example and to pray always, because of our endless need of prayer, the darkness of our minds, our ignorance and weakness and because of the strength and number of our enemies. Anyone who really gives heed to this Our Master s commandment will surely not be satisfied with saying the Rosary once a year or once a week but will say it every day and will never fail in this. This month let us remember the words of our Loving Heavenly Mother: Do not lose heart! I will never forsake you. My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God. May our Lady of Fatima bless you and protect you all! Fr. This is the last pilgrimage night for this year. There will be a Mass at 7:30 pm, followed by the outdoor procession and blessing of the sick inside the church. Pope Francis has also invited all to conclude the recitation of the Rosary with the ancient invocation Sub Tuum Praesidium, and with the prayer to Saint Michael Archangel that he protect us and help us in the struggle against evil (cf. This program consists of 33 days of prayer and exercises which help purify souls to prepare one for Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary. The Total Consecration The first period includes 12 days of exercises for casting off the spirit of the world. The second period consists of 3 weeks devoted to the Knowledge of Ourselves, the Knowledge of the Blessed Virgin Mary and to Jesus Christ. The program also includes going to Confession prior to Consecration and Holy Communion on consecration day with the intention of giving oneself to Jesus Christ through Mary.
