2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine March 10, 2019 Dear Friends, F P D The Holy Mass: The Beginning of the Beginning Each Mass has an infinite, immense value that we can never fully understand. It causes the whole heavenly court to rejoice. It alleviates the pain of the souls in purgatory. It draws down all types of blessings upon earth, and gives more glory to God than all the sufferings of all the martyrs together, more glory than the penances of all the saints, than all the tears shed by them since the beginning of the world and all that they may do till the end of time. (St. John Marie Vianney: Sermon on the Holy Mass) It s time to finally unpack the parts of the mass, piece by piece. Yes! After all of the preparatory work, we have finally arrived at the different parts of the Mass. Do not, however, become lax on the preparations; they are crucial to a culture of the Mass in your life. If you pay close attention to the procession, as the priest enters the sanctuary, he genuflects before the Blessed Sacrament and then he will reverence the altar with a kiss. Why does he do this to the altar? This gesture was a common practice even in ancient cultures. It is a sign of reverence towards the divine. The significance of the kiss in the Holy Mass is three-fold: firstly, it is intended to simply reverence the altar, the mensa Domini (table of the Lord). Secondly, the kiss was developed by the idea that the altar, built of stone, signifies Christ Himself who is the cornerstone. Thirdly, as the reverence for and cult of martyrs grew, it became a rule in the Middle Ages that every altar should enclose a sepulcher or little reliquary. (cf., Jungmann, The Mass of the Roman Rite) Summarizing the veneration of the altar, we can say that the priest, as he enters the threshold of the sanctuary, is entering the threshold of heaven, reverently kissing and acknowledging the Church Triumphant, Christ the victor along with the Saints in heaven. One element that we should explain here is the incensing of the altar. We use incense for solemn moments, such as Sundays, Feast Days, or other special occasions. The significance of incense can be easily described by referring to the psalmist who uses the silent and solemn billow of the smoke as an image of prayer that rises to God and the saints in heaven. (Ps 140:2) You will notice that the incense is used around the altar and towards sacred images. This another sensible way of showing prayerful reverence towards these things, which are symbols of Christ, the Blessed Virgin, or the saints. In total, incense is used during four different moments at the mass: around the altar at the beginning of mass, towards the book of the Gospel just prior to its proclamation, over the gifts of bread and wine during the offertory, and as the host and chalice are elevated after the consecration. After the incense takes place you will notice that the priest takes his place, which is a place of prominence. If he is praying on behalf of the people, one may wonder why he doesn t just simply sit with everyone else. Well, the very name given to the place where he sits, sede or Chair, signifies or symbolizes the authority and office of the priesthood. There are similar seats of authority in the court of law or even in governments, for example, the seat of a judge or chairperson. It s worth noting that the authority and office of the chair itself has nothing to do with the person of the priest, but the authority and office of Christ, who is the Eternal High Priest. Finally, arriving to the very last part of the very beginning of the Mass, we have the Sign of the Cross. This sign is perhaps the most identifiable gesture that we do. In fact, it is part of the Rite of Acceptance when one is seeking full acceptance into the Church, along with receiving the Bible, receives the sign of Christ s Cross. In the Rite of Acceptance, the sign of the cross is traced on their forehead, ears, eyes, lips, heart, shoulders, hands and feet, so that they become living proof of the cross s saving power, and are helped to persevere in the footsteps of Christ. In this way, every Christian has become marked by the sign of His cross. Therefore, in this sacred act of worship, the sign of the cross helps us to remember who we are and sets the tone or gives significance to everything that will follow in the Mass. It is a visible proclamation of our Faith in the Trinity and a remembrance of the Crucifixion. Next week we will get into some of the introductory points that are made by the priest, as well as the penitential rite and Kyrie. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian

In From Fire, by Water, he recounts this unlikely passage, from the strident Marxism and atheism of a youth misspent on both sides of the Atlantic to a moral and spiritual awakening prompted by the Mass. Mark your calendars for May 4th, when we will welcome Sohrab to Our Lady of Peace Parish to hear him speak. More details to come! But very few know how to have a good religious argument a rational, respectful, and productive exchange of differing views. Bishop Robert Barron, one of the leading Catholic figures in the world and among the most active on social media, has enjoyed thousands of fruitful religious arguments. In this book based on talks delivered at Facebook and Google, he explains why religion at its best opens up the searching mind, and how we all can share better discussions about God.
