2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine February 3, 2019 F P D The Land Without a Sunday Dear Friends, If we understand the sacredness and the magnificence of the Holy Mass, wouldn t it make sense for us to approach the day especially set aside for this, Sunday, with the same understanding? This, my friends, is a matter that is serious, urgent, and as worthy of your attention as anything else in your lives (health, finances, education, etc.); and the good news is that the solutions are really fairly simple, if we apply a little common sense. If you understand how simple and common sense these solutions are, you might even be able to say they are easy; however, bearing in mind anytime that we go against the current of common practice, or against our own bad habits, there will be resistance. At this point, you may be asking yourselves, what is he getting at? or what is even talking about? Here is the point, Sunday, the Day of the Lord is and should be a day unlike any other in our week. The week begins and ends here. It is the culminating point for the days that have passed and the source of refreshment for the days to come, truly and really, objectively speaking. Today, I want to focus on not keeping this day holy. There was an organized effort to abolish Sundays in the Soviet Union, Communist Russia, during the years of During this eleven-year period, the Soviet Union had no weekends. They underwent an experiment of a continuous week that shifted work schedules on a national scale so that work would never cease, and it failed. It was called the nepreryvka or continuous working week. Why would this experiment be implemented? Well, in the eyes of the Soviet government led by Joseph Stalin s Marxist philosophy, Sundays represented a major threat to the successful advancement of material production and industrial progress. In other words, if nobody is working on Sundays nothing gets done. Why? Because the only thing that matters is the material; working on relationships with God and family are simply a waste of time. From the communist perspective, what was happening was that for one full day the machines sat idle, nothing was being produced, no money made, because people retreated to forms of rest that were contrary to the revolutionary ideal, such as family life or religious practice. A Baron who spent time in Russia during this period related his experience: The impression throughout the country was one of incessant work, work, work. The atmosphere was one of constant rush and drive; finally, we confessed to each other that what we were missing most was not a well-cooked meal, or a hot bath, but a quiet, peaceful Sunday with church bells ringing and people resting after prayer. This Baron s account is taken from a wonderful little essay by Maria Von Trapp (yes, the lady from the Sound of Music), where she nicely suggests that Communist Russia was not the only Land without a Sunday, but the hustle and bustle of secular America is effectively lived in the same way. The alarming difference between these two lands is that in one prohibition of the Sabbath rest was imposed from without, whereas in America people are free to do as they like, the obstacle is somehow in the individuals themselves. In his Apostolic Letter, The Lord s Day, St. John Paul II says that Sunday is a day of Joy, a day of Rest, and a day of Solidarity. These three things really get to the heart of our Sunday observance and why it is good for human beings, because these things truly rejuvenate us and truly bring us closer to God and to one another. For many, many years, throughout time and cultures, divine worship has been the driving force for humans to cease their labors. Only worship has outdone work. It was not so long ago that we really thought, laws even reflected this, that everyone deserved a day of rest together, and Sunday was a day when most people could gather to worship God and be with their families. We live a land that is free. Let us not use this freedom to enslave ourselves to work and to things, but rather to praise, reverence, and serve God through Holy Mass and spending time with family. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian
