2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace October 11th, 2015 From Our Pastor Dear Parishioners, Few days separate us from the celebra on of St. Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church (Oct. 15) whom Pope Francis has recently described as primarily a teacher of prayer. (Le er to the Superior General of the Order of Discalced Carmelites, 03/28/15) This me, I d like to highlight four counsels all of them intertwined- that can help us along our journey in the spiritual life and which I invite you to pause and read a en vely. 1. Prayer. One of the key hallmarks of the spiritual heights of Saint Teresa of Avila is the importance of prayer. She defined prayer as nothing more than spending a long me alone with the one I know loves me. She reminds us that our voices are not unknown to God, However quietly we speak, He is so near that He will hear us. We need no wings to go in search of Him, but have only to find a place where we can be alone and look upon Him present within us. (The Way of Perfec on, Ch. 28) 2. Courage. She knows that prayer might some mes be arduous, so she tenderly yet firmly advises us: We offer to Christ, inwardly and outwardly, what sacrifice we can. (The Interior Castle) The Lord does not look so much at the magnitude of anything we do as at the love with which we do it. If we accomplish what we can, His Majesty will see to it that we become able to do more each day. (Seventh Mansions, Ch. 4) Aware that the devil can present to the soul huge tempta ons she does not hesitate to affirm that we need courage to overcome all those difficul es. Knowing that for the energy shown in bearing the trials of beginners allows our Savior to recognize His valiant friends who can drink of the chalice and bear the cross before He trusts them with His great treasures. (Life, 11) And she insists: All that the beginner in prayer has to do is to labor and be resolute and prepare himself with all possible diligence to bring his will into conformity with the will of God. 3. Love for Jesus. Saint Teresa gives us a hint to prayer growth! This woman Doctor of the Church said that she found many graces by medita ng upon the Humanity of Jesus. By spending me with Jesus, the Son of God made man and entering into colloquy with Him is a sure path to growth in prayer. She wrote in her book The Interior Castle (Ch. 7, 8): Some souls imagine they cannot meditate even on the Passion, s ll less on the most blessed Virgin or on the saints, the memory of whose lives greatly benefits and strengthens us. I cannot think what such persons are to meditate upon, for to withdraw the thoughts from all corporeal things like the angelic spirits is not possible for us while in this mortal flesh; we need to study, to meditate upon and to imitate those who, mortals like ourselves, performed such heroic deeds for God. How much less should we willfully endeavor to abstain from thinking of our only good and remedy, the most sacred Humanity of our Lord Jesus Christ? I cannot believe that any one really does this; they misunderstand their own minds and so harm both themselves and others. Of this at least I can assure them: they will never thus enter the last two mansions of the castle. If they lose their Guide, our good Jesus, they cannot find the way and it will be much if they have stayed safely in the former mansions. Our Lord Himself tells us that He is the Way; He also says that He is the Light; that no man cometh to the Father but by Him; and that He that seeth Me, seeth the Father also. Try it! 4. Perseverance. Even though she struggled for many years she teaches us this basic but indispensable spiritual truth: Perseverance in prayer! I invite you to prayerfully read her immortal words of wisdom and meditate upon them: They should begin well, she affirms, by making an earnest and most determined determina on not to halt un l they reach their goal, whatever may come, whatever it happen to them, whether they reach their goal or die on the road or have no heart to confront the trials which they meet, whether the very world dissolves before them. (Way to Perfec on, Ch. 21) Perseverance amid exterior trials and aridi es, perseverance when we are persecuted and afflicted by evil thoughts which we cannot cast out, perseverance in resuming recollec on for there is no other remedy than to start again when it has been lost, perseverance in the struggle despite all obstacles, not to halt un l the goal is reached. Parish groups are especially encouraged to sign up. One can participate any day of the week but Our Lady of Peace is committed to cover all Tuesdays over the campaign, so please try to help us meet our goal. CFF Series: PREPARING FOR THE YEAR OF MERCY Pope Prancis has called for a Jubilee Year of Mercy, beginning this coming December 8.and con nuing un l the Solemnity of Christ the King, Nov. 20, Our CFF (Catholic Faith Fellowship) sessions will discuss the theme of mercy and read the le er wri en by Pope Francis outlining the purpose and meaning of the Year of Mercy. Learn also how to obtain the special Year of Mercy indulgences. Please join us in our sessions on Tuesdays: Oct. 20, 27, Nov. 3, 10 & 17. We meet in Room 1101 of the Family Learning Center, from 7:15 to 8:45pm. No registra on.
