2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace September 2, 2018 Dear Friends, Perhaps it is not quite accurate to say that this next forgotten virtue is really forgotten as much as it just simply is not understood or much less practiced. One of the most countercultural virtues to speak of, in our world today, would be chastity. The sexual revolution has greatly affected the culture at large, families, and sadly within the Church. By and large, there has been a lowering of standards and permissiveness of unchaste behavior. Frankly, we are facing a crisis of chastity. There are many subsets of this problem that, although not all equal in their gravity, all contribute and accomplices to this very real and very serious epidemic of un-chastity that impregnates virtually every facet of human society. Evidence of this keeps surfacing at seemingly every turn, from the grievous sacrileges committed by the Church s ministers against chastity, to the casual hook-up culture that young people are adopting, to the incomprehensible pervasiveness of pornography and suggestive material throughout the web, to the contraceptive culture and abortion that help facilitate and procure complete liberality regarding sexual engagement. Even if the common practice says otherwise, the divine precept of the sixth commandment tells us that chastity is a universal call to all people and for the good of all people. The commandments help us to true freedom, which as St. John Paul II says, is to do what we ought and not want we simply we like. (St. John Paul II, Baltimore, Sunday, 8 October 1995) Moreover, when it comes to the commandments of God, it is not really a question of whether it is hard or easy, pleasing or displeasing, but right or wrong, true or false, bad or good. It is good, respectful and full of love to refrain from sexual acts outside of a valid sacramental marriage. Is it difficult to be chaste in our age? Undoubtedly. Difficult, however, does not mean impossible; it only means it is something that we must work at, refine, and commit to. Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. (Mt 5,8) To St. Rose of Lima our Lord said: Rose of my soul, give me your heart, your chaste love. The virtue of chastity, by the lordship granted to the soul over the body, to the spiritual over the carnal, has a non-negotiable place in the process of spiritual life and access to union with God. Lust blinds us, we cannot see God. And when we are blind to God that same blindness prevents us from truly seeing our neighbor. Blindness to God and neighbor will ultimately result in the inability to see my very own self. So, I begin to see myself not according to the truth of who I am, but according to how I feel. Sadly, amongst our youth that defining feeling is one of despair and sadness, rather than the youthful virtues of joy and free-spiritedness. Chastity is not repression, rather it is something wholly positive, it is a total gift of self to the beloved. Chastity is loving the whole person rightly and entirely (past, present, future; forever and for always). An unchaste love is partial and self-centered, where the individual is in some degree taken as an object for possession. Let us propose, therefore, something bold and truly beautiful. If we are facing a crisis of chastity, the solution is simple, each and every individual according to their state in life must make a courageous decision to be chaste. It is that simple. Chastity is not easy, but it is that simple. So many beautiful virtues are incorporated with a chaste life, while on the contrary, so many ugly vices are assumed with an unchaste life (it s called the culture of death), it is what we are living. Chastity is not simply prohibition or abstaining. Chastity is dominion of oneself, it is sexuality integrated to the whole person, it is capacity to direct our interior desires to something great lifelong love, it is an attitude, and it is for everyone. 3 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 Bishop McGrath s Statement on Pennsylvania Grand Jury Findings August 15, 2018 Statement of Bishop Patrick J. McGrath Diocese of San Jose The news this week of the historic sexual abuse of minors in six Pennsylvania dioceses is truly horrific. Trust was first betrayed by these attacks on the innocent; however, the systematic cover-up and reassigning of these priests by their bishops and superiors is just as unforgivable. As I have stated on many occasions, we the Church and its ministers must abide by a higher standard. We are called to protect and keep safe children, the young and all vulnerable persons. There can be no short-cuts, nothing that can excuse immoral and sinful acts. The Diocese of San Jose remains committed to protecting God s children and to fostering the safest of environments in which to worship, learn and live. I echo the bishops in Pennsylvania who have asked for forgiveness. Yet we know that forgiveness does not absolve perpetrators of the consequences of these grave transgressions against the defenseless. Finally, I ask you to pray for the victims and their families. I would also request that you pray for the vast majority of priests present and past who have been faithful in their ministry. They, too, grieve for the terrible stain of this sin that has harmed so many. May God bless you all. Bishop McGrath s Statement on his retirement living situation August 27, 2018 Statement of Bishop Patrick J. McGrath Diocese of San Jose When I began plans to retire, and considered where I would live, I had wanted to remain in the Diocese of San Jose. This has been my home for nearly 20 years. At first, I had hoped to live in a diocesan-owned house that is located on cemetery property, but necessary retrofitting proved to be too costly. This made it necessary to look for another house. The Diocesan Finance Council and the College of Consultors approved the purchase of the home in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose. I agreed with them that in economic terms the purchase of the home made sense in terms of financial return on investment. It was bought primarily with funds that had been designated for this sole purpose, funds that had accrued from the sale of Bishop DuMaine s condominium, when he was no longer able to live in it due to failing health. However, I erred in judgment in the purchase of a 5-bedroom home for $2.3 million. I failed to consider adequately the housing crisis in this valley and the struggles of so many families and communities in light of that crisis. I have heard from many on this topic and I have decided that I will not move into this house. The Diocese will put it up for sale as soon as possible; if there is any profit to the Diocese from that sale, those funds will be donated to Charities Housing, a division of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. I assume full responsibility for this decision and I believe that the sale of the house is the appropriate action. I thank those who have advised me. When I retire, I now intend to live in a rectory at one of our parishes.

Turn the completed form in to the parish office or to an SSVM sister. If you need more information or transportation to the place, please call (650) or c.ourladyofpeace@servidoras.org Our Lady of Vailankanni Feast Celebration Thursday, September 6th Mass at 7pm Rosary Procession and Fellowship to follow All are invited! Diocesan Seminarian Appeal After years of declining numbers of priestly vocations, a growing number of men are answering the call of Jesus to serve as priests in the Diocese. The blessing of these many vocations presents one particular challenge: the cost of one year of priestly formation averages $50,000 for tuition, room and board and a monthly stipend. With 12 men in priestly studies, that total is approximately $600,000. While the Annual Diocesan Appeal covers some of this cost, the Diocese still needs to raise an additional $300,000. As a result, the Bishop is inviting all parishioners to take part in our Seminarian Appeal. Letters will be mailed to all parishioners during the week of September 4th.
