1 St. Juan Diego Parish Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon February 10, 2013 Taizé Prayer I want to share with you a wonderful form of prayer that we will be holding during the Season of Lent here at St. Juan Diego Parish. Taizé prayer is a contemplative type of prayer that includes singing (of course!), scripture readings, and silence. Its mood is reflective with candles and dim lighting. The set-up is different than Mass in that the scriptures are not proclaimed from the front and there isn t a musician standing in front of you instead we all sit in the congregation with our focal point on a reflective object such as the cross or an icon, surrounded by candles. Taizé Prayer is a form of prayer that I am especially passionate about. I first encountered it while attending Seattle University. I was struck by this quiet and peaceful approach to prayer, and appreciated that it is prayed all over the world, in many denominations and nations. As you probably know, music is my joy and I am so grateful that I get to lead you all during our Masses. I am always amazed at how music can stir the heart. But there is something you might be surprised of that I also love about Taizé services. Silence. In a busy world I absolutely ache for time when I am forced to be quiet. No, silent. Silence in which I can listen to what God is sharing with me and not what I am trying to share with others. We all know that it is important for each of us to find time to reflect without the bombardment of phones, s and the daily tasks we have. But we all know the challenge of carving the niche we require to have that time. I invite you to consider finding this time through Taizé. During the Mondays of Lent I will provide Taizé Prayer Services in the Sanctuary at 7pm. Each service stands alone and I will have a worship aid for you to help you participate. You will hear scriptures, participate in simple repetitive songs and, yes, sit in silence. As we prepare ourselves for Lent, I pray that we can each deepen our understanding of our baptismal call and our communion with others around us. May our Lenten services at St. Juan Diego help us reflect on the mission of Christ, so that we may continue to serve those around us with renewed understanding and dedication. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Next Saturday, Feb 16, we will celebrate the Rite of Sending, formally asking the church to accept our Catechumens as members of the Elect- those chosen by God for baptism and to pray for our Candidates continued growth in the Spirit. Archbishop s Catholic Appeal TEACH, BLESS, SERVE Next weekend, February 16/17, is Commitment Weekend for the 2013 Archbishop s Catholic Appeal (ACA), During Mass, we will watch a video from Archbishop Vlazny. If you received a personalized commitment card in the mail, please bring it to Mass as we join together to support our Catholic Church in western Oregon. If you did not receive a commitment card in the mail, pledge envelopes will be available in the pews. This next week, please read the materials you received in the bulletin and prayerfully reflect on the level of commitment you will make next weekend. ACA provides substantial financial support to essential ministries that support parishes in our Catholic Church in western Oregon. These programs provide education and faith formation at all levels and provide a Catholic presence for tens of thousands of people. When we stop to count our abundant blessings, we are aware of how truly blessed we are. ACA is an invitation to share your blessings and support for the Gospel mission here in Western Oregon. A significant pledge to this appeal is a sign that you are a part of the holy people who follow in the footsteps of the faithful throughout this history of scripture. Knights of Columbus Say Thank You The St. Pius X and St. Juan Diego Knights held their annual Crab Dinner Jan. 27 at the SPX Community Ctr. The Knights served over 270 folks - plenty of wonderful crab to go around. We, the Knights, want to thank all the folks who attended, those of you who have attended in the past but were not able to attend this year and all of you have who supported our organization thru donations and attending any of our other fund raising events. It is only with your support that we are able to support our charities (high school scholarships, financial support for seminarians, monthly birthday party at St. Mary's Home for Boys, the two children we adopted thru CFCA, and the financial support we are able to give to both parishes and to St. Pius X school - to name a few). Thank you again for your support at the Crab Feed and thank you for all your other support. Around the Archdiocese of Portland CYO Track & Field and Lacrosse Registration for CYO Spring sports is now open. Our Track & Field program is open to boys and girls in 3rd - 8th grades and runs from March 11-May 9. The Lacrosse program is open to 1st - 8th grade boys and girls and runs from March 11-early June. Catholic Charities Ministry to the Elderly Committee announces a Lenten Day of Recollection for all who minister to the sick and elderly in any capacity. 5 Lenten Taizé Services at St Juan Diego MONDAY EVENINGS DURING LENT 7PM IN THE SANCTUARY Taizé Prayer Services are contemplative services of scripture, song and quiet reflection. These prayer services come to us from Taizé France, from a community of Brothers comprised of various faith backgrounds and around 30 nations. The services are designed to be contemplative through the use of Taizé music (many you ll find familiar from our Holy Thursday and Good Friday Services at SJD), soft lighting, candles and silence. Prayer sheets will be available to assist you in participating. During the Season of Lent, we will include opportunities for Veneration of the Cross during the Taizé Services.
