2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace September 30, 2018 Dear Friends, As we began this little eight-week journey through some forgotten or unknown virtues, I encouraged you to pour a glass of lemonade or sun tea and ponder. It was an invitation to think about some of the most beautiful things in life virtues. Well, the time has come to begin to put them into practice, so put aside the drink and get ready to work! Virtue building is a labor of love. In order to commit these seven forgotten virtues to memory, so as to not forget about them, I wanted to provide a small glossary of terms for you. Virtue this is a stable disposition that perfects the powers of the soul (intellect and will) in order to work well. This good work, or better work, this optimization of human capacity is what allows the concept of virtue to be given its full meaning. Humility Humility is a virtue which, basing itself on the truth present to it by the intellect, moderates the appetite so that it will takes its correct place before God and before men. "it refrains hope or confidence in oneself", says St. Thomas (S. Th. II-I, 161, 2 ad. 3), in the sense that it protects us from a false hope that is more than anything presumption; seen in this manner, it complements magnanimity which pushes a timid hope towards the goals that are truly fitting for man. Magnanimity Magnanimity by its very name denotes stretching forth of the mind to great things. Magnanimity is the characteristic of superior souls, who dream of the optimum, who know themselves worthy of supernal things. Or, more precisely, it is magnanimous who aspires to what is great in things. His main object, his object par excellence, is the greatest. Below that main object, it has secondary objects: the other great things. Studiousness it signifies the intense application of the mind to something (vehementem appli- cationem mentís ad aliquid). This is what this word means: to dedicate oneself to something, to occupy oneself conscientiously in something, to work hard. Chastity It is often thought that the virtue of chastity has a purely negative character, which is nothing more than a series of no's. On the contrary, it is of course a "yes" from which the "no" results at once... The opinion that the virtue of chastity has a negative character is therefore false. On the contrary, the moderation of states and acts inspired by sexual values serves positively those of the person and of love... Only a chaste man and woman are capable of experiencing true love. (Karol Wojtyła, Love and Responsibility) Chastity is the virtue that brings the sexual appetite into harmony with reason. It requires, not the renunciation of sexuality, but the right or reasonable use of it. Generosity Liberality or generosity is presented to us as the virtue by which man virtuously uses the goods he possesses; or, if one prefers, it is an interior disposition that orders, love, complacency, and attachment relative to those goods, according to reason. Patriotism The virtue of patriotism is a virtue that is located under piety and justice. Piety extends to the homeland insofar as this is in a certain way the principle of our being, legal justice considers the good of the homeland from the point of view of the common good. Eutrapelia This virtue is the power to moderate and order the rest and the recreation that the soul needs. For, the soul, as well as the body, gets tired and has to rest. Therefore, it is necessary to grant this rest to the soul by means of games and celebrations, whose moderation belongs to the virtue of eutrapelia, practiced during the times of recreation. Here are some closing thoughts for reflection. Rest assured that cultivating virtues is really worth my time. It will demand my Continued on page 3 Announcements We joyfully welcome all visitors to the Shrine This week s 2nd collection: St. Vincent de Paul Society Next week s 2nd collection: Facilities Maintenance Fund Donuts and Coffee Sale The Knights of Columbus invite you to their donuts and coffee sale after all morning Masses. 3 Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 consistent effort to concentrate on a given course of action. It will take time, which will demand repeating the process over a long period. It will involve growing pains and facing obstacles. Nevertheless, I will gradually develop a tendency to perform the action spontaneously and almost without reflection, yet with a degree of perfection that someone else without the virtue cannot duplicate. Some questions to leave you with: Are there things that need to be corrected, rectified, or changed in my view on virtues and vices? Do I consider virtues as the best things for myself and those around me? Do I consider virtues as the most necessary things for my family, for those around me, or for my country? I find myself seeing bad things in my family, in society, within the people in the church; what can I do to change this? Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Smith (reg $39.95) Janet Smith is one of the most significant and one of the ablest defenders of Humanae vitae in the English-speaking world. This book is mely, not only because of the fi y-year anniversary of the document, but because the need for a defense that penetrates to the profound anthropological vision at its heart has never been greater.
