Isaiah 61:11 A PRAYER FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 17, 2017 Lord, our God, we praise You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, for He is Emmanuel, the Hope of all people. He is the Wisdom that teaches and guides us. He is the Savior of us all. O Lord, let your blessing come upon us as we light two (purple) advent candles and the third (pink) of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ's promise of salvation. May He come quickly and not delay. We ask this in His holy name. 2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace December 17, 2017 Dear Friends, If you are able to jog your memory all the back to the beginning of Advent, I quoted a sermon from St. Bernard that contained two forms of disposability: one that focuses our lives on things that are ephemeral and passing; the other is being disposable for divine activity in your life. Let us take a look at the latter. Here is the quote for the sake of reference: Do you, therefore, turn your thoughts with earnestness to those that are truly desirable, and diligently meditate on this coming of our Lord? Consider Who He is that comes, whence He comes, to whom He comes, for what end He comes, when He comes, and in what manner He comes. This he says is the praiseworthy pursuit of Advent. So, in light of last week s look at being lured into the trap of consumerism, today we can see if Advent couldn t be a time in which we are disposable. Is Advent a time for you to be affected by God s entrance into the world? Or to put it in a more provocative way, are you infected by Christ? C.S. Lewis in his work, Mere Christianity, uses the example of tin soldiers to explain the Incarnation and Nativity of our Lord. He asks if a boy does not often think what fun it would be if a tin soldier were turned into flesh and blood. In the Incarnation, we have one human being out of all humanity who was in fact completely divine, but as Lewis goes on to point out, the illustration breaks down here. If one tin soldier came to life, it would make no difference to the rest of the tin soldiers. They are all separate. But human beings are not: If you could see humanity spread out in time as God sees it, it would not look like a lot of separate things dotted about. It would look like one single growing thing rather like a very complicated tree. Every individual would appear connected with every other individual consequently when Christ becomes man, it is not really as if you could become one particular tin soldier. It is as if something which is always affecting the human mass begins at one point to affect the whole human mass in a new way. From that point on, the effect spreads through all mankind. Indeed, Jesus Christ has redeemed humankind. He has delivered our anemic organism the vaccination of redemption that definitively remedies sin and death. Humanity is saved in principle, but ever since the babe came to the world in a manger at Bethlehem, individuals still have to take the divine antidote and allow it to course through our veins by considerable effort: namely, by making ourselves disposable to the Divine infection. So, why does He come, for what end does He come? He wants to heal us, He wants to infect our lives in such a good way that we become like Him. The only thing is that we must be disposed for this to happen. May the remainder of Advent be a time in which you dispose yourself in such a way to truly allow Christ to enter into the world.
