Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine Mission Statement Our Lady of Peace is a church and shrine dedicated to the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls. 2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace October 20, st Reading: Ex 17:8-13 Psalm: Ps 121: 1-8 2nd Reading: 2 Tm 3:14-4:2 Gospel: Lk 18:1-8 Dear Parishioners, FROM OUR PASTOR In two more days, on October 22 nd, the church will remember the memory of our beloved Holy Father, Blessed John Paul II. In fact, the date was chosen because it was the anniversary of the inauguration of his papacy in 1978 (he was elected on October 16 th, 1978). After the November 2011 meeting of the Conference of Bishops of the United States, a petition was sent to the Congregation for Divine Worship to include the celebration of Blessed John Paul II in the calendar of the dioceses and archdioceses of the United States. Beatification permits the veneration of a person by particular groups or by locale, and so the Vatican had to allow Bl. John Paul II's feast day to be observed permanently in the United States. Our bishops petition was approved by the congregation last year, on October 22 nd This year we rejoiced at the news that our Beloved Holy Father will be canonized. In fact, on July, Friday 5 th while journalists in the Holy See Press Office were busy coming to grips with Pope Francis first encyclical Lumen Fidei, they were surprised at lunchtime when Director Fr. Federico Lombardi S.J. called them back for a second announcement: Pope Francis had approved the cause for canonization of two of his venerable and much loved predecessors: Blessed John XXIII and Blessed John Paul II. That same Friday morning after meeting with Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Cause of Saints, Pope Francis approved the promulgation of the decree and also convoked a special Consistory of the College of Cardinals to discuss the canonization of the Polish pope in depth. Blessed John Paul II has been one of the most inspirational people in recent history. The world was indeed blessed by his wisdom, faith and also for his smile. Like a true father, he gently led his people, teaching us about life, marriage, family and faith. His writings and speeches continue to instruct and inspire the faithful and all people of goodwill. His exceptional apostolic zeal, particularly for families, young people and the sick, led him on numerous pastoral visits throughout the world. Among the many fruits which he has left as a heritage to the Church are above all his rich Magisterium and the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church as well as the Code of Canon Law for the Latin Church and for the Eastern Churches. Bl. John Paul II died April 2, He was beatified only six years later, after the Vatican recognized his intercession in the healing of a French nun who suffered from Parkinson's disease. And he will be canonized on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, Archbishop Fulton Sheen was a prophet when he wrote in his Autobiography (published a few month before his death on December 1979 (and shortly a year after the inauguration of the papacy of John Paul the II): I believe that John Paul II will go down in history as one of the great Pontiffs of all times. As one looks over the history of Christendom, it seems that there is a crisis about every five hundred years. The first cycle of five hundred years was the fall of Rome, when God raised up the great Pontiff Gregory the Great, who had been a senator in Rome. He became a Benedictine monk and then set about the conversion of the barbarians and prepared the way for a Christian Europe. The second cycle of five hundred years brings us roughly to the year 1000, when there was the Eastern schism, but also the decline of holiness in the Church Gregory VII, who was a Benedictine, was raised by God to heal that crisis against much opposition from within and prepared the way for the great medieval civilization. In the third cycle of five hundred years, there was a breakup of Christian unity. Clergy again became corrupt, nuns became secular and everyone recognized the need of reform. Some undertook to reform the Faith. There was nothing wrong with the Faith. What needed reformation was behavior. The great Dominican Pontiff, Pius V, saved the Church by applying the reforms of the Council of Trent and by establishing missionary activity throughout the world. Now we are in the fourth cycle of five hundred years, with two world wars in twenty-one years, and the universal dread of nuclear incineration. This time God has given us John Paul II, who has drawn the attention of the world to himself as no human being has done in history. The parish applied for and received a grant from Silicon Valley Power for a solar power system of 27kw that will provide some of the electrical needs of our church campus. The grant covers the cost, installation, and maintenance of the system, and is valued at $100,000. After installation, the system will be owned by the parish. The only visible portion of the system will be solar panels mounted on the roof of the Family Learning Center. Construction will begin the week of October 6. For everyone s safety, please stay away from the construction area taped off around the Family Learning Center.
